Matt black is the practice helmet in the range, and that is a compliment. Nothing about it is precious, dust does not show as a film across a shine, and the flat surface takes goggle-strap marks and paddock handling without recording every one of them.

What this helmet is for — and what it is not

The honest question to ask before buying is what proportion of your riding is on tarmac. If the answer is „just getting there", this helmet is right and you will wear goggles and accept the noise. If the answer is „an hour each way", the Hornet ADV 06 gives you a visor, a quieter shell and a helmet you can use on the road.

🔵 The VFX-WR 06 has no visor at all, and no version of it does.

About the matt black finish

Off-road helmets live harder lives than road ones, and the finish that copes best with that is a flat one. There is no clear coat for a scuff to catch in, so the low-level marking a helmet picks up between the van and the start gate simply does not read. Dry dust is the exception — matt holds it more visibly than gloss — but dust washes off and swirl marks do not. The finish also suits the shape. The VFX-WR 06's defining feature is the continuous contour running from the peak over the crown to the back of the shell, and matt shows that line as geometry rather than as a highlight. 🔵 Like every matt finish, it is washed and never polished; there is no gloss layer to buff a mark out of. And like every dark helmet, it runs warmer than the white.

What MOTORCYCLE NEWS measured

Getting the generation right matters here more than usual, because the previous VFX-WR was a different helmet certified to a different standard. MCN's March 2026 review is explicitly of the 06, and it is the only source that weighed one: 1250 g.

Their verdict was 4 out of 5, with a perfect 5.0 for comfort and ventilation described as exceptional.

AIM+, four shells, double-D and EQRS

The continuous contour running from the peak over the crown to the back of the shell is structure rather than styling. That line is what makes the shell rigid, and it gives the goggle strap a defined seat instead of letting it wander up the back of the helmet under load.

Underneath it: six-layer AIM+ composite, multi-density EPS, double-D retention and EQRS emergency cheek pad release.

M.E.D.S. — and why it is not MIPS

Rotational acceleration is the injury mechanism helmet design has spent the last decade catching up with. A straight impact compresses; an angled one also spins the head, and the brain does not tolerate that well. Every serious off-road helmet now addresses it in some way.

Shoei's answer is M.E.D.S. — a flexibly linked inner element within the multi-density EPS core. 🔵 It is Shoei's own system, not MIPS.

Seven in, eight out, and a filter in the nose

Fifteen openings in total — seven in, eight out — is a specification that only makes sense once you have ridden hard in one. A motocross rider's heat output is closer to a runner's than to a motorcyclist's, and a road helmet's ventilation is simply not built for it.

MCN's independent test called the airflow exceptional, which is the strongest word they use.

Sizing, goggles and Max-Dry

The helmet is designed around goggles, so try it on with the goggles you actually ride in rather than with a borrowed pair. The aperture is generous — MCN's test took motocross goggles without difficulty — but frames differ enough that it is worth checking before you commit.

How loud it is on the road

🔵 If your riding involves any meaningful tarmac, budget for earplugs and treat them as part of the helmet. Hearing damage from wind noise is cumulative and permanent, and it happens at speeds most riders consider ordinary.

This is doubly true here: MCN's independent test called the road noise substantial, and they were not being unfair to the helmet.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

Where this sits: it is the mid-priced Shoei and the only competition helmet in the line-up. Everything else — jets, retro full-face, sport-touring, flip-up, racing — is a road helmet solving a road problem.

🔵 The one helmet that overlaps at all is the Hornet ADV 06, and it overlaps by adding a visor rather than by being more off-road capable.

When something breaks

The nose cover filter is the part to keep spares of. It catches the fine dust that would otherwise reach your throat, and a dry summer clogs one considerably faster than most riders expect — a blocked filter is the usual reason a helmet suddenly feels airless.

Peaks, mouthpieces, mud guards and padding in several thicknesses are all stocked alongside.
