Shoei VFX-WR 06 Black – Motocross Helmet ECE 22.06

The Shoei VFX-WR 06 is a competition motocross helmet, and it does not pretend otherwise. Modern shell construction lets Shoei build a shape that is stiff and light at once, with a continuous contour running from the peak over the shell to the back of the head — that line is what makes the shell rigid and gives the goggle strap somewhere secure to sit. Finished in black / gloss.

Shell Construction and Safety

AIM+ is Shoei's higher shell grade, the same family used on their racing helmets: six layers of fibreglass, organic and high-performance fibres, combined into a shell that resists deformation without carrying unnecessary weight. Underneath sits a multi-part EPS core whose elements absorb differently, so energy is distributed rather than concentrated at the point of impact. In an emergency the cheek pads can be pulled out through the EQRS (Emergency Quick Release System), so first responders can take the helmet off with minimal movement of the head and neck.

M.E.D.S. — and How It Differs from MIPS

Most crashes do not deliver a clean straight-line impact; the head is also twisted. M.E.D.S. — Motion Energy Distribution System — addresses that with an inner EPS element that is flexibly linked within the multi-part core, allowing controlled movement that bleeds off rotational energy instead of transmitting it to the head.

To be precise about it: M.E.D.S. is Shoei's own development and is not MIPS. MIPS is a separate, licensed technology built around a low-friction layer that rotates independently inside the helmet. Both target rotational forces; they are engineered differently, and we would rather name the system correctly than borrow a better-known label.

What This Helmet Is For

The VFX-WR 06 has no visor. It is a competition off-road helmet designed to be worn with motocross goggles, and the deep peak and wide aperture that make it work on a track are exactly what make it loud and draughty at sustained road speed.

If you want one helmet for gravel tracks and long tarmac transfers, an adventure helmet with a visor — the Hornet ADV 06, for instance — is the better tool and we would rather point you there. This one is for the track, the trail and the start gate.

Ventilation

Seven intakes feed the rider with air and eight exhausts move used air out — a far higher through-flow than any road helmet needs, because a rider working hard on a motocross track generates heat a touring rider never does. The large nose cover carries a metal mesh and a replaceable filter insert, which keeps dust, dirt and stones out of the helmet without choking the airflow.

Fit and Interior

The head pad is contoured for airflow rather than bulk, and the three-dimensionally preformed cheek pads use fast-drying, skin-friendly Max-Dry covers that pull sweat away — which matters when the helmet is working as hard as you are. Everything comes out for washing, and pads are available in different thicknesses so the fit can be tuned.

Four shell sizes keep mass centralised, which is what riders actually feel over a long moto: a helmet that stays balanced rather than pulling on the neck through the whoops.

Size Guide

Shoei builds this helmet in four outer shell sizes (XS–S | M | L | XL–XXL), which matters more than it sounds: a helmet scaled from a single shell across the whole range ends up oversized on small heads and thin-walled on large ones. On a competition helmet this matters twice over — for weight and for the mass centralisation that spares your neck.

Measure the circumference of your head about a centimetre above the eyebrows, at the widest point, and compare it with the size chart linked on this page. If you fall between two sizes, take the smaller one and fine-tune with thinner cheek pads — a helmet that can be rotated on the head by hand is too big, whatever the tape says. The interior beds in slightly during the first few hours of use, so a new helmet should feel firm but never painful.

One more thing on fit: this helmet is designed around goggles. Try it on with the goggles you actually ride in, not with a borrowed pair — the aperture is generous, but goggle frames differ enough that it is worth checking.

Fitment and Compatibility

No visor and no Pinlock — this is a goggle helmet. Peaks and mouthpieces are available in a range of colours and designs, so the helmet can be personalised or repaired after a fall. Replaceable filter inserts for the nose cover, a mud guard, an anti-reflection sticker and spare peak screws are all part of the genuine parts range, as are cheek and head pads in several thicknesses.
