DescriptionThe whole story▼
Please note: sale to France is prohibited.
Gloss black on a competition motocross helmet is an unusual choice and a deliberate one. Off-road helmets are normally sold on graphics; a plain black one says the helmet is equipment, which on a 1250-gram AIM+ shell happens to be true.
What this helmet is for — and what it is not
🔵 The VFX-WR 06 has no visor. It is a competition off-road helmet designed to be worn with motocross goggles, and the deep peak and wide aperture that make it work on a track are exactly what make it loud and draughty at sustained road speed.
If you want one helmet for gravel tracks and long tarmac transfers, an adventure helmet with a visor — the Hornet ADV 06, for instance — is the better tool, and we would rather point you there.
About the gloss black finish
There is a practical case for a plain finish that graphic buyers rarely hear. A motocross helmet gets peppered with roost, scuffed by goggle straps, dropped in the paddock and washed with a pressure hose — and a solid colour can be polished, touched in and lived with in a way a printed decor cannot. When the peak gets marked, you replace the peak; when the shell gets marked, you deal with it. Gloss black is also 160 € less than any of the graphics here, which on a helmet you will genuinely wear out is worth thinking about. The counterweight is real: black absorbs heat, and a motocross rider generates more of it than any road rider. Seven intakes and eight exhausts do a great deal to compensate, but on a still August track day the white is the cooler helmet.
What MOTORCYCLE NEWS measured
MOTORCYCLE NEWS tested the VFX-WR 06 itself — not the previous generation — in March 2026 and rated it 4 out of 5. Comfort scored a full 5.0, the ventilation was called exceptional, and the measured weight was 1250 g.
🔵 The same review is blunt about the cost: „substantial wind noise on the road". That is inherent to an open-aperture competition helmet, not a fault of this one.
AIM+, four shells, double-D and EQRS
AIM+ is Shoei's higher shell grade, the same family used on their racing helmets: six layers of fibreglass, organic and high-performance fibres combined into a shell that resists deformation without carrying unnecessary weight.
Beneath it, a multi-part EPS core whose elements absorb differently. The chin strap is a double-D ring, and EQRS lets first responders pull the cheek pads out for a controlled removal.
M.E.D.S. — and why it is not MIPS
Most crashes do not deliver a clean straight-line impact — the head is twisted as well as struck. M.E.D.S. (Motion Energy Distribution System) addresses that with an inner EPS element flexibly linked inside the multi-part core, allowing controlled movement that bleeds off rotational energy.
🔵 M.E.D.S. is not MIPS. MIPS is a separate licensed technology built around a low-friction layer that rotates independently. Both target rotational forces; they are engineered differently, and we would rather name the system correctly than borrow a better-known label.
Seven in, eight out, and a filter in the nose
Seven intakes feed the rider and eight exhausts move used air out — far more through-flow than any road helmet needs, because a rider working hard on a motocross track generates heat a touring rider never does.
The large nose cover carries a metal mesh and a replaceable filter insert, which keeps dust, dirt and stones out without choking the airflow. MCN called the ventilation exceptional.
Sizing, goggles and Max-Dry
Head and cheek pads are Max-Dry, a fast-drying material that matters far more here than in a road helmet — everything comes out for washing, and pads are available in several thicknesses so the fit can be tuned.
🔵 Measure about a centimetre above the eyebrows at the widest point. If you fall between sizes, take the smaller one and fine-tune with thinner cheek pads — a helmet you can rotate by hand is too big, whatever the tape says.
How loud it is on the road
🔵 MCN's verdict on road use is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing: „substantial wind noise on the road". That is the cost of a large goggle aperture, a deep peak and fifteen vents, and no competition helmet avoids it.
Off-road, at the speeds this helmet is designed for, it is a non-issue. On a motorway transfer, earplugs are not optional.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
The VFX-WR 06 is Shoei's competition off-road helmet and sits alone in the range — nothing else they make is designed for a start gate. The nearest relative is the Hornet ADV 06, which adds a visor and a road-usable shell for riders who need one helmet for both worlds.
🔵 If you are choosing between them, the deciding question is how much tarmac you ride, not how much dirt.

When something breaks
We stock the genuine Shoei parts for this helmet: replacement peaks and mouthpieces in a range of colours and designs, nose cover filters, mud guards, anti-reflection stickers, spare peak screws and interior padding in several thicknesses.
🔵 The peak is the part that breaks — by design. It is meant to give way rather than transmit a load, so treat it as a consumable.
