DescriptionThe whole story▼
Please note: sale to France is prohibited.
Matt black is the finish that lets a jet helmet disappear, and on a classic or a naked bike that is usually the point. Nothing about it competes with the motorcycle, and nothing about it fixes the helmet to a particular year.
What MOTORRAD measured, and how
Jet helmets are rarely tested independently — SHARP does not rate them, and most comparisons are subjective. MOTORRAD's 21/2025 group test is the exception: twenty helmets, laboratory work at TÜV Rheinland, and wind-tunnel noise measurement at 100 km/h.
The J-Cruise 3 came out of it with a „very good" verdict, which in a field of twenty is a meaningful placement rather than a participation note.
About the matt black finish
Jet helmets get handled more than full-face ones — put on and taken off at every stop, carried by the chin bar that is not there, set down on café tables and pillion seats several times a day rather than once. That handling is exactly what matt absorbs best: there is no gloss layer for a scuff to catch in, so the marks a jet accumulates simply do not show. The counterweight is honest and worth stating: this is the least conspicuous helmet in the range, on a helmet type already used mostly in the environment where being seen matters most. If your riding is urban and year-round, the white or the Chalk Grey in this range will do more for you. Matt also shows dust and dried water spots sooner than any gloss finish.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
Riders choose jets for specific reasons — the field of view, the air on your face, glasses that go on and off without a fight, and being able to talk to someone without removing anything. Those are real advantages and this helmet delivers all of them.
🔵 What it does not deliver is chin and jaw protection. The open-face category under ECE 22.06 does not include it, and the chin area is where a meaningful share of impacts land.
AIM, three shells, and a buckle that will not open by accident
The stainless steel micro-ratchet closes with one hand, which is worth more on a jet than on a full-face because you will use it far more often — a helmet you take off at every stop is a strap you fasten several times a day.
Its release lever requires a defined minimum angle before it will open, so it cannot be knocked loose by a glove or a jacket collar.
CJ-2 and QSV-2 — and the Pinlock that is not in the box
🔵 Worth knowing before you order: this helmet is prepared for a Pinlock EVO anti-fog lens rather than supplied with one. The correct part is the DKS105, and on an open-face used through a European winter it is the first accessory to add — a jet fogs readily because your breath has nowhere to go but up the visor.
The visor itself is the CJ-2, with over 99 % UV rejection.
Three in, three out — the rebuilt ventilation
An open-face helmet has a ventilation problem full-face designs do not: the largest opening in the shell is the face aperture, and air entering there tends to short-circuit straight out again rather than travelling over the crown. Getting flow across the top of the head requires dedicated channels and, critically, enough extraction at the rear to pull air through them.
Hence three exhausts and seventy per cent more extraction than before.
Interior, ear pads and talking to the helmet
An interior that comes out and goes into a washing machine matters more on a jet than on a full-face, because a helmet worn in summer on short journeys collects sweat faster and dries less between rides. A liner washed twice a season lasts markedly longer than one that never is.
All padding here is fully removable, and the COMLINK interface sits behind it.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
Read the table by format. Shoei's range runs from a simple jet at 399 euros to a racing full-face at 799, and the money tracks what the helmet is for rather than how well it is made — the composite shell construction runs through all of them.
The J-Cruise 3 is the premium jet, and the most touring-capable open-face Shoei builds.
| Model | Type | From |
|---|---|---|
| J.O2 | Jet | from 399 € |
| Glamster06 | Full-face (retro) | from 469 € |
| J-Cruise 3 | Jet (premium) | from 549 € |
| GT-Air3 | Full-face (sport-touring) | from 599 € |
| Neotec 3 | Flip-up (P/J) | from 669 € |
| X-SPR PRO | Full-face (racing) | from 799 € |
Around 1400 grams, and the rest of the honest list
🔵 Two things riders assume are included and are not. The Pinlock EVO DKS105 anti-fog lens is a separate purchase — and on an open-face, where breath rises straight onto the visor, it is not optional in winter. The SENA SRL3 Mesh is likewise an accessory; the helmet is prepared for it, not equipped with it.
Beyond that: no chin bar, and an intermediate-oval fit worth trying before committing.
When something wears out
Cheek pads are the first part to go and the cheapest way to restore a fit that has loosened. On an open-face they matter more than on a full-face, because there is no chin bar helping to locate the helmet — the pads and the crown liner are the only things holding it in position.
They are removable, washable and available in more than one thickness.
