DescriptionThe whole story▼

Chalk Grey is the pale neutral in the J-Cruise 3 range, and on an open-face helmet it does something the darker greys cannot: it keeps your face from being the only light thing in the frame, which is how the helmet ends up looking balanced rather than top-heavy.
What MOTORRAD measured, and how
A twenty-helmet comparison is a harder context than a standalone review, because every helmet is measured against the same rig on the same day. MOTORRAD ran theirs in issue 21/2025 with laboratory work at TÜV Rheinland, and the J-Cruise 3 finished with a „very good".
That verdict covers the helmet as a whole — fit, visor, ventilation, noise and workmanship — rather than any single measurement.
About the Chalk Grey finish
There is a compositional argument for pale helmets on open-face designs that sounds trivial and is not. With a full-face, the shell and the visor form one continuous dark mass. With a jet, your face occupies the lower third of that shape — so a dark shell above a lit face creates a strong tonal split that reads as heavier than the helmet is. A pale shell removes that split. The practical arguments are the ones every light grey has: the tonal gap to road film is small enough that a wet week does not read as neglect, the surface reflects rather than absorbs solar energy, and against tarmac at dawn and dusk it separates from the background far better than anthracite or black.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
🔵 No chin bar, stated plainly at the top rather than in small print. ECE 22.06 certifies this helmet in its open-face category, which tests the shell, the strap and the visor but not the chin protection a full-face provides — because there is none to test.
Everything else on this page is about how well the helmet does the job it does do.
AIM, three shells, and a buckle that will not open by accident
The break points are worth knowing: XS, S and M share the smallest shell, L has its own, XL and XXL share the largest. If you sit at the top of a group the helmet will feel closest to its intended fit, because that size is the one the shell was drawn around.
All three are AIM composite, with the same stainless steel micro-ratchet retention.
CJ-2 and QSV-2 — and the Pinlock that is not in the box
More than 99 % ultraviolet rejection applies to the clear CJ-2 as much as to a tinted one, which surprises people. The blocking lives in the polycarbonate and its coating rather than in the tint — so a clear visor protects your eyes from UV just as a dark one does, while the tint governs only visible light.
🔵 Anti-fog is separate: the Pinlock EVO DKS105 is not supplied.
Three in, three out — the rebuilt ventilation
Worth being clear about what a jet's ventilation can and cannot do. It cannot make a dark shell in July sun cool — that energy arrives through the shell regardless. What it can do is remove the heat and moisture your own head produces, and that is where the reworked three-in, three-out system earns its place.
The pale finishes in this range address the other half of the problem.
Interior, ear pads and talking to the helmet
Shoei's intermediate-oval head shape applies here as across the range, and on an open-face it is easier to assess in a shop because you can see and feel the fit at the sides without a chin bar in the way. If your head is markedly long or markedly round, that will show up immediately.
All padding is removable and washable; ear pads come out separately.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
Shoei positions the J-Cruise 3 as the open-face equivalent of its touring helmets, and the specification supports that: three shell sizes, a full-size integrated sun visor, a communication interface and a rebuilt ventilation system are not features you find on a 250-euro jet.
The table below shows what the alternatives in the range cost and what format each one is.
| Model | Type | From |
|---|---|---|
| J.O2 | Jet | from 399 € |
| Glamster06 | Full-face (retro) | from 469 € |
| J-Cruise 3 | Jet (premium) | from 549 € |
| GT-Air3 | Full-face (sport-touring) | from 599 € |
| Neotec 3 | Flip-up (P/J) | from 669 € |
| X-SPR PRO | Full-face (racing) | from 799 € |
Around 1400 grams, and the rest of the honest list
Price belongs on the honest list. At 549 euros this is an expensive open-face helmet, and there are jets at a third of the price that will keep the rain off. What the money buys is three shell sizes, a panoramic visor, a full-size sun visor and a ventilation system that was rebuilt rather than adjusted.
What it does not buy is a chin bar, a Pinlock lens or an intercom.
When something wears out
The QSV-2 sun visor is replaceable, and worth replacing rather than tolerating once scratched. It retracts into a slot at the top of the shell where it collects whatever comes off a glove, and a mark on an internal shade sits permanently in your line of sight — you cannot flip it out of the way as you can an outer visor.
The CJ-2 outer visor is likewise a separate part.
