DescriptionThe whole story▼
Please note: sale to France is prohibited.
Acconic in TC-9 is the gold colourway — the only metallic-toned graphic in the J-Cruise 3 range and the one that belongs most obviously on a classic or a café-styled motorcycle, where gold has been part of the visual language for fifty years.
What MOTORRAD measured, and how
What an independent verdict cannot tell you is whether the helmet fits your head, and on an open-face that matters as much as on any other type. What it can tell you is how the helmet performed against nineteen others on the same rig, on the same day, measured by the same people.
MOTORRAD did that in issue 21/2025 and rated the J-Cruise 3 „very good".
About the Acconic TC-9 colourway
Gold on a helmet is not a metallic in the technical sense of aluminium flake; it is a warm, high-value tone achieved through pigment and layering, and the difference shows in how it behaves. A true metallic flashes and goes flat by turns as the angle changes; a gold like this one holds a consistent warmth across the curve and shifts more gently. That suits a jet helmet, whose shell is small and constantly seen at changing angles as you move your head. It also sits with a specific kind of motorcycle — the black-and-gold and the brushed-aluminium end of the market — in a way that no other colour in this range does. Practically it is a mid-tone finish, so road film shows less than on white and more than on grey.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
If you are moving to a jet from a full-face, the adjustment worth anticipating is not the missing chin bar in a crash — it is the missing chin bar in the wind. Air arrives at your face directly, which is the appeal in summer and the reason a jet is a different proposition in February.
🔵 And the protection difference is real: ECE 22.06's open-face category includes no chin impact test.
AIM, three shells, and a buckle that will not open by accident
One-handed closure is not a convenience feature on this helmet, it is the difference between a strap that gets done up properly and one that does not. A jet is removed and refitted several times on a single journey, and a fastening that takes two hands and attention is a fastening that eventually gets left loose.
The micro-ratchet is stainless steel, with a minimum release angle that prevents accidental opening.
CJ-2 and QSV-2 — and the Pinlock that is not in the box
Tool-free visor changes and a glove-operable sun visor slider are the two ergonomic decisions that make this helmet workable in practice rather than just on paper. A control you cannot find without looking is a control you will not use at 100 km/h.
🔵 The one thing you will have to add yourself is the Pinlock EVO DKS105 anti-fog lens.
Three in, three out — the rebuilt ventilation
The measurable claim on this helmet's ventilation is the extraction increase — roughly seventy per cent over the previous generation, across three exhausts. The felt claim is that a hot urban stage is bearable in it, which is the sort of thing that only shows up in a twenty-helmet comparison like MOTORRAD's.
Intakes number three, and all of them close.
Interior, ear pads and talking to the helmet
Two parts of the interior are worth having spares of before you need them: the cheek pads, because they take the most sweat and friction on a helmet removed several times a day, and the ear pads, because they are the acoustic component and they compress over time.
Both are removable, washable and available separately, as is the rest of the padding.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
An open-face at 549 euros sits above most of the jet market, and the reason is visible in the specification rather than in the badge. Three shell sizes on a jet is rare at any price; a full-size stepless sun visor is rarer; and a communication interface designed into the EPS is rarer still.
The table below shows the rest of Shoei's range for context.
| Model | Type | From |
|---|---|---|
| J.O2 | Jet | from 399 € |
| Glamster06 | Full-face (retro) | from 469 € |
| J-Cruise 3 | Jet (premium) | from 549 € |
| GT-Air3 | Full-face (sport-touring) | from 599 € |
| Neotec 3 | Flip-up (P/J) | from 669 € |
| X-SPR PRO | Full-face (racing) | from 799 € |
Around 1400 grams, and the rest of the honest list
The lightest helmet in Shoei's touring line-up at around 1400 g, and the one with the least material between you and the road. Both of those statements describe the same design decision, and neither is a criticism — but they belong on the same page.
🔵 Also not included: the Pinlock EVO DKS105 lens and the SENA SRL3 Mesh unit.
When something wears out
Plan visors as a pair rather than one at a time — a clear CJ-2 for winter and night riding, something tinted for summer, swapped tool-free in about a minute. The one thing that does not move between them is the Pinlock lens, which is pinned to a single screen.
🔵 And on this helmet you will have bought that lens separately in the first place: the correct part is the DKS105.
