DescriptionThe whole story▼

Gloss black on a jet helmet is a different proposition from gloss black on a full-face, because far more of the shell is visible and far more of your face is not hidden by it. This is the version that reads as a piece of clothing rather than as equipment.
What MOTORRAD measured, and how
MOTORRAD rated the J-Cruise 3 „very good" in its twenty-helmet jet comparison, issue 21/2025 — with laboratory work carried out at TÜV Rheinland and noise measured at 100 km/h in Schuberth's wind tunnel.
That combination matters: a magazine test with independent laboratory backing is a different thing from a road impression, and the noise figure in particular was measured rather than described.
About the gloss black finish
An open-face helmet is seen differently by everyone around you — your face is visible, so the helmet becomes a frame rather than a mask, and the finish matters in a way it does not on a full-face. Gloss black is the most neutral frame available: it recedes, it dates slowly, and it works with a leather jacket and a textile one equally. The shell itself is compact and light at around 1400 g, and gloss shows that compactness — the J-Cruise 3 is not a large helmet, and a reflective finish makes that obvious in a way matt does not. The upkeep is the usual gloss-black bargain: road film against a dark clear coat is maximum contrast, and dry-wiping leaves permanent swirls, but washed wet and dried properly it will still look new when the padding needs replacing.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
🔵 The J-Cruise 3 has no chin bar. It is certified under ECE 22.06 in the open-face category, and that category does not include the chin and jaw protection a full-face shell provides — the chin region takes a substantial share of impacts in real crashes.
That is the trade you are making for the view, the airflow and the ease of putting the helmet on. It is worth making deliberately.
AIM, three shells, and a buckle that will not open by accident
The AIM shell is a fibreglass composite of several fibre materials, built compact and light. Beneath it sits a multi-part polystyrene core whose elements absorb differently, so impact energy is distributed rather than concentrated where it lands.
Six sizes, XS to XXL, are carried on three separate shells (XS–M | L | XL–XXL) — unusual on a jet at any price.
CJ-2 and QSV-2 — and the Pinlock that is not in the box
The CJ-2 panoramic visor is the defining feature of this helmet. It is distortion-free deep into the periphery — which on an open-face matters more than on a full-face, because there is no chin bar edge to mark where your view stops — and it blocks over 99 % of incoming ultraviolet.
Behind it, the stepless QSV-2 sun visor covers almost the entire usable field of view. 🔵 The Pinlock EVO lens (DKS105) is not included.
Three in, three out — the rebuilt ventilation
The ventilation was reworked from the ground up for this generation: three intakes and three exhausts, with roughly seventy per cent more extraction than the previous model. On a jet that is less about cooling your face — the air reaches it anyway — and entirely about moving heat and humidity off the top of your head.
It is the reason a hot city stage in this helmet is bearable.
Interior, ear pads and talking to the helmet
All padding is fully removable and washable, and removable ear pads are fitted for noise reduction — worth knowing on an open-face helmet, where there is no chin bar to block the airflow that generates most of the noise you hear.
The SHOEI COMLINK interface carries the SENA SRL3 Mesh system in pre-routed cabling. 🔵 The unit is a separate accessory.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
Shoei makes two jets, and the gap between them is a hundred and fifty euros. The J.O2 is the simpler, more classically styled one; the J-Cruise 3 is the touring-capable version with a panoramic visor, an integrated sun visor, a rebuilt ventilation system and a communication interface.
If your open-face riding is short and urban, the J.O2 will do. If it involves distance, this is why the premium exists.
| Model | Type | From |
|---|---|---|
| J.O2 | Jet | from 399 € |
| Glamster06 | Full-face (retro) | from 469 € |
| J-Cruise 3 | Jet (premium) | from 549 € |
| GT-Air3 | Full-face (sport-touring) | from 599 € |
| Neotec 3 | Flip-up (P/J) | from 669 € |
| X-SPR PRO | Full-face (racing) | from 799 € |
Around 1400 grams, and the rest of the honest list
The honest list. No chin bar — covered above, and the defining limitation of the format. Around 1400 g, which is genuinely light and the one specification where a jet beats every full-face. No Pinlock supplied: the helmet is DKS105-ready and the lens is a separate purchase.
And the SENA SRL3 communication unit is likewise an accessory rather than an inclusion.
When something wears out
Nothing that wears out on this helmet is the shell. All padding is removable and separately available, the ear pads come out independently, the CJ-2 visor is replaceable, and the QSV-2 sun visor is stocked on its own.
🔵 The Pinlock EVO lens for this helmet is the DKS105 — it is a spare part rather than an inclusion, so it appears here rather than in the box list.
