DescriptionThe whole story▼
Before the shell, before the graphic, there's the light. The Skwal i3 carries integrated LED brake lights front and rear, activated by the helmet's own motion rather than a wire to the bike — Shark's claim to the world's first production helmet built this way. In Speed-Fancy, that engineering comes wrapped in a gloss black shell broken up by a white zebra-stripe graphic, a pink-to-purple gradient swoosh across the crown, light-blue trim and orange chevrons on the chin bar.
How the brake light actually works
Shark calls the Skwal i3 the world's first production helmet with an integrated, active brake light, and the mechanism behind that claim is a three-axis accelerometer, not a connection to the motorcycle's wiring. It senses the deceleration of your own head and shoulders and lights the rear LEDs red at three flashes a second for ordinary braking, five a second when the stop is sudden — no Bluetooth, no app, nothing to sync before a ride.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
ECE 22.06 is the standard behind every Skwal i3, and it tests far more than the number implies. Eighteen impact points instead of the old standard's five, multiple impact speeds rather than a single fixed one, an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that twists the shell instead of just dropping it straight down, and — for the first time — a Brain Injury Criterion that scores rotational forces alongside the usual linear deceleration. The helmet is tested wearing its visor, Pinlock insert and a mounted comms unit, not as a bare shell. This has been compulsory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024. The certification reads 2206, no FIM suffix attached.
Shell, closure and ventilation
Polycarbonate — Lexan, specifically — makes up the Skwal i3's outer shell, backed by a multi-density EPS liner that varies its firmness through the structure instead of using a single foam grade throughout. The closure is a micrometric buckle rather than the double-D ring some other Shark road helmets use: a toothed strap that ratchets to a precise tension and releases with one pull, no threading required. Ventilation runs on a multichannel front-intake, rear-extractor layout, measured independently at four intakes and two rear exhausts.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
1,570 g is the number Shark gives for the Skwal i3, quoted for the first, smallest shell size — and an independent press review lands on the identical figure without clarifying the size either, which at least confirms the number itself even if the size reference stays vague. No one feels that in a car park; they feel it four hours into a ride, when the neck muscles holding a static load the whole time start to complain. Most full-face road helmets in our own range weigh somewhere between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g, and the Skwal i3 sits toward the middle of that spread.
Visor and Pinlock
Optical Class 1, a pre-fitted Pinlock 70, and a shape that varies in thickness from 3 mm at the edge to 2.2 mm through the main field: that's the VZ400-family visor fitted to every Skwal i3, the same family used across the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup. A moulded vortex generator manages airflow over its surface, the coating resists scratches, and a central grip with central locking pops it free without tools. It sits outside Shark's IRID photochromic list, which names only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro — tinted lenses here come from the aftermarket.
Sun visor and everyday usability
Reach up to the crown, slide, and the internal sun visor drops — a small mechanism that matters most exactly when you don't want to stop and dig out sunglasses. The Skwal i3 accepts a Sharktooth or SENA intercom without any modification to the shell, and the interior's been redesigned so glasses sit without pinching. A 5-year warranty covers the whole helmet.
Wind noise, honestly
No invented decibel rating here — what exists instead is a long-term press review's description: noise that 'isn't unduly loud,' with no localised source of wind noise anywhere on the shell, credited partly to a substantial neck roll at both sides and a generous chin curtain sealing the base. Screen height and riding position still shape the final result more than any single spec could.
Living with the Speed-Fancy graphic
Gloss holds its shine through repeated washing and wipes clean of bug spatter with less effort than a matte surface would, at the cost of showing scuffs more visibly. Underneath the graphic sits a gloss black shell broken up by a white zebra-stripe graphic, a pink-to-purple gradient swoosh across the crown, light-blue trim and orange chevrons on the chin bar.
Riders who spend most of a week in city traffic get the clearest benefit from this helmet, since the brake light earns its keep at every set of lights and every roundabout, not just on a fast open road where following distances are already longer. The graphic on this decor is a bonus; the light underneath it is the actual argument.
Fit across the size run
XS through XXL, six sizes in total. We don't have a confirmed figure for how many separate shell moulds cover that range on the Skwal i3 specifically, and we're not inventing one just to sound thorough — use the size chart, which answers the only question that actually matters.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Working from the bottom of Shark's road range: Ridill 2 from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 from €219.99, Skwal Cup €269.99 to €339.99 (no LED). This decor sits at €379.99. The Skwal i Cup, the other LED-equipped model in the range, starts from €329.99 — the light system is most of what separates both from the Cup below them.
Spare parts, later
Replacement parts are straightforward here, because the Skwal i3 doesn't stand alone: its VZ400 visor and Pinlock 70 insert are shared across the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, all carried under the same Shark part numbers, so a worn visor is a quick order rather than a new-helmet decision.
What this helmet does not have
No SHARP rating exists for this specific model. That matters because the older Skwal and Skwal 2 both carry four stars from the UK's SHARP programme, and it would be easy to assume the Skwal i3 inherits that — it doesn't, because SHARP hasn't tested it. Beyond that: ECE 22.06 with no FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic compatibility, and a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring. On the brake light: Shark's own manual asks the rider to check their own country's laws on LED use rather than asserting road-legal status itself, carries no E-mark for the light system, and neither Shark nor any independent source found here confirms or denies StVZO conformity in Germany. That is an open question, and it stays open here rather than being resolved one way or the other without proof.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
Power comes from a non-replaceable internal battery, topped up via a USB-C cable tucked into the neck protection — roughly three hours to fill it, about twelve hours of runtime in flashing mode afterwards. The system is efficient about standing by: 60 seconds without movement puts it to sleep, and after 72 hours of total inactivity it shuts itself down. Shark's own manual notes that a nearly empty battery will let the system switch on briefly before cutting out again almost immediately, at which point it needs recharging.
What actually arrives
Inside the box: the Skwal i3 itself, Pinlock 70 pre-fitted to the visor, the LED system's USB-C charging cable already tucked into the neck protection, and Shark's paperwork — 5-year warranty terms plus the LED manual, which is also where the note about checking local legislation on LED use is printed.
