DescriptionThe whole story▼
Ask what's new about the Skwal i3 and the answer isn't the shell shape — it's the integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, built to react to the helmet's own deceleration rather than anything wired to the bike. Shark markets it as the world's first production helmet to do this. Gang is this same system in a gloss black shell with a subtle grey and silver tonal camouflage pattern.
How the brake light actually works
There's no wire from the Skwal i3 to the motorcycle's brake light, and that's deliberate — the helmet reads its own deceleration through a three-axis accelerometer built into the shell, then drives red LEDs at the back at three flashes a second in normal braking, jumping to five a second when the stop is hard. A second, independent set of white LEDs at the front adds daytime and low-light visibility that isn't tied to braking at all.
What this helmet does not have
Limitations, stated once and clearly rather than hidden in a footnote: no SHARP rating for the Skwal i3 itself (SHARP's Shark entries are the older Skwal and Skwal 2, four stars apiece, not this helmet). No FIM suffix on the ECE 22.06 certificate. No MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic option. A micrometric buckle instead of a double-D ring. And on the brake light's German road legality: unresolved. Shark's manual defers to the rider's own country's legislation rather than asserting approval, includes no E-mark for the light, and no source used in this research — manufacturer or press — settles the matter one way or the other.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
Three hours on a USB-C cable — stored inside the neck protection rather than left dangling — buys about twelve hours of flashing-light runtime from the sealed, non-swappable battery. The system manages its own power from there: standby after 60 seconds without movement, complete shutdown after 72 hours idle. Get down to a near-empty charge and the manual's own words are that it will still switch on, then turn off again almost instantly, which means the charger, not a spare cell, is the answer.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
The version number jumped by one decimal point; the test regime did not. ECE 22.06, which every Skwal i3 carries, strikes eighteen impact points against the old standard's five, uses multiple impact speeds instead of a single one, adds an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil, and scores rotational forces through a Brain Injury Criterion the old standard never measured. Testing happens with visor, Pinlock and comms unit fitted. Mandatory in the EU since January 2024. No FIM suffix on this certificate — 2206 only, meaning road approval, not competition homologation.
Shell, closure and ventilation
Grading the EPS liner's density across the shape, rather than using one foam throughout, is standard practice on a helmet built to ECE 22.06, and the Skwal i3 does it under a shell of injection-moulded Lexan polycarbonate. The closure is a micrometric buckle — ratcheting, precise, quick to release — rather than a double-D ring, and ventilation runs on a multichannel layout of front intakes and rear extractors, four and two by independent count.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
Every gram matters less in the first hour than in the fourth, fifth or sixth — which is the whole argument for paying attention to a number most riders skim past. Shark's 1,570 g for the Skwal i3 is quoted for the smallest shell size; a separate, independent press review reaches the identical figure without clarifying size either. It lands inside the roughly 1,250–1,800 g range that most road-legal full-face helmets in our range occupy.
Visor and Pinlock
Shark fits the same VZ400-family visor across five helmets — this one, the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — which means the Skwal i3 gets Optical Class 1 certification, a pre-fitted, adjustable-tension Pinlock 70, a moulded vortex generator and a lens tapering from 3 mm to 2.2 mm as standard, not as an upgrade. Anti-scratch coating and central-lock, tool-free removal complete it. It's not on the IRID photochromic list, which is limited to the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.
Sun visor and everyday usability
Comfort with glasses on isn't an afterthought here: Shark specifically redesigned the Skwal i3's interior so arms sit without pressure. Add a crown-slider internal sun visor for low-sun moments and a shell ready for a Sharktooth or SENA intercom without modification, and daily usability is covered from three directions at once. Warranty runs 5 years.
Wind noise, honestly
The parts of a helmet that usually leak noise — the base of the shell, the chin — get specific attention here: a substantial neck roll and a generous chin curtain, credited by an independent long-term review for keeping the Skwal i3 from generating localised wind noise anywhere on the shell. No decibel number backs any of this up, and none is claimed.
Gang on the shelf versus on the road
Under shop lighting, a gloss black shell with a subtle grey and silver tonal camouflage pattern reads one way; moving at speed, the gloss finish changes how it catches the eye — more reflective, catching light in a way a matte shell simply can't.
A rider navigating city traffic daily benefits from this decor more directly than one doing long, open-road trips, since the brake light's usefulness is tied to how often you're braking near other vehicles rather than how far you're riding.
Fit across the size run
XS to XXL across six sizes describes the Skwal i3's size run. The shell-count behind it isn't something we could confirm specifically for this model, so it stays unstated — the size chart answers the practical question of fit either way.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Five helmets, one ladder: Ridill 2 opens it at €189.99, D-Skwal 3 at €219.99, Skwal Cup at €269.99–€339.99 — the last one built without any LED. This decor sits at €349.99, and the Skwal i Cup, the only other LED model, opens from €329.99.
Spare parts, later
Fogged Pinlock inserts and scratched visors are wear items on any helmet, and on the Skwal i3 they're solved with parts shared across the whole VZ400 family — D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup, Skwal i Cup — under common Shark part numbers rather than a bespoke listing for this model alone.
In the box
The helmet ships ready to use: Pinlock 70 fitted, USB-C charging cable stowed in the neck protection, and the manufacturer's documentation covering both the 5-year warranty and how the LED system works, including the note on checking local rules.
