DescriptionThe whole story▼
Rear-view visibility used to mean reflective panels and hoping for the best. The Skwal i3 changes that with integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, triggered by the helmet's own motion sensor — the world's first production helmet built this way, according to Shark. This decor, Gang Matte, wears the system in a matte black shell with the same grey camouflage pattern cut through by red diagonal stripes.
How the brake light actually works
It flashes faster the harder you brake, and that alone tells a following driver more than a static light ever could. The mechanism is a three-axis accelerometer reading the helmet's own deceleration — three flashes a second normally, five a second under hard braking — with white LEDs up front running independently for forward visibility. None of it depends on a connection to the bike.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
Forget to charge it and the Skwal i3 doesn't strand you without a helmet — only without the light. The sealed battery, filled via USB-C in roughly three hours for about twelve hours of flashing-mode use, sleeps after 60 seconds without movement and shuts down after 72 hours of inactivity. Near empty, Shark's manual says it can still be switched on, but it shuts off again almost immediately, and the only remedy the manual gives is putting it back on charge.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
If a helmet's certificate reads 2206 with nothing else attached, as the Skwal i3's does, that's ECE 22.06 without an FIM competition suffix — road approval, not a racing homologation. The standard itself tests eighteen impact points rather than the old 22.05's five, at multiple speeds, adds an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil, and scores rotational forces via a Brain Injury Criterion the earlier standard didn't measure. The helmet is tested with its visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit in place, and has been mandatory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024.
Shell, closure and ventilation
Open the front vents and the air has somewhere specific to go: a multichannel path leading to rear extractors, four intakes and two exhausts by an independent count. The shell carrying that airflow is Lexan polycarbonate, injection-moulded over a multi-density EPS liner that varies its firmness through the structure, and the whole thing closes with a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring — a ratchet strap that clicks to an exact tension.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
Two sources, one number: Shark's own figure and an independent press review both land on 1,570 g for the Skwal i3, though neither clarifies whether that's for a size M or the smallest shell alone — Shark's own spec sheet says it's the latter. Set against our own catalogue of road-legal full-face helmets, most of which weigh between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g, the Skwal i3 sits comfortably in the middle.
Visor and Pinlock
Tool-free doesn't always mean quick, but on the Skwal i3's VZ400-family visor — shared with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — a central grip with central locking makes it both. The lens is Optical Class 1, tapers from 3 mm to 2.2 mm in thickness, carries a moulded vortex generator and an anti-scratch coating, and ships with a Pinlock 70 already fitted, tension adjustable. It isn't compatible with Shark's IRID photochromic tint, a list limited to the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.
Sun visor and everyday usability
A slider at the crown is all it takes to drop the Skwal i3's internal sun visor — no fumbling for sunglasses at a red light with low sun behind it. The interior's redesigned to seat glasses without discomfort, the shell is ready for a Sharktooth or SENA intercom with no modification, and Shark's 5-year warranty covers everything underneath the graphics.
Wind noise, honestly
Wind noise is one of the harder specs to verify honestly, which is why we're reporting what an independent long-term review actually found on the Skwal i3 — noise levels not unduly loud, no single localised source, credited to a substantial neck roll and generous chin curtain — rather than a decibel figure that doesn't exist in any source we use.
The case for Gang Matte
If a matte black shell with the same grey camouflage pattern cut through by red diagonal stripes is the look you want, the matte finish is part of the package — chosen here for how well it hides the small scuffs a helmet picks up over a season.
Commuting is where this decor makes its case: the LED brake light fires every time you slow for traffic, which happens far more often on a daily ride through town than on a long, open stretch of road. It's a helmet built for the ride you actually do most weeks, not the one you photograph on a weekend.
Fit across the size run
Six sizes cover the range, XS to XXL. We're deliberately not stating how many shell moulds that's built on, because we couldn't confirm the number for this specific helmet — the size chart remains the reliable route to the right fit.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Shark doesn't hide its own internal competition. Road-helmet ladder, bottom to top: Ridill 2 from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 from €219.99, Skwal Cup €269.99–€339.99 (no LED). This decor: €349.99. Skwal i Cup, the other LED model: from €329.99.
Spare parts, later
Buying into a shared parts platform has a real benefit years down the line: the Skwal i3's VZ400 visor and Pinlock 70 insert are the same parts fitted to the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, so replacement stock isn't tied to how well this one specific decor sells.
What this helmet does not have
We'd rather list what's missing than let a customer find out later. No SHARP star rating specific to the Skwal i3 — only the older Skwal and Skwal 2 have been through that programme. ECE 22.06 alone, no FIM suffix. No MIPS liner, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic compatibility. A micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring. And, the point that gets its own emphasis: the brake light's legal standing on German public roads hasn't been confirmed anywhere we looked. Shark's manual tells the rider to check local legislation themselves; no E-mark exists for the light; no manufacturer or press source confirms or denies StVZO conformity.
First unboxing
Pinlock 70 already in the visor, the USB-C cable for the brake light already in the neck protection, and Shark's paperwork — warranty and LED manual together — arrive with the helmet, no separate parts to track down before the first ride.
