DescriptionThe whole story▼
A following driver sees a motorcycle's brake light on the bike. On the Skwal i3, they also see one on the rider's head — integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, reacting to the helmet's own deceleration. Shark says it's the first production helmet built this way. Mekarium Matte carries the system under a matte black shell with grey tonal shading and a red diagonal accent stripe along the side.
How the brake light actually works
Two sets of LEDs, one sensor. White ones sit at the front, red ones at the back, and both are driven by a three-axis accelerometer that reads how quickly the helmet is slowing down — not a signal from the bike's own brake light, which the Skwal i3 has no electrical connection to at all. Normal braking flashes the rear red LEDs three times a second; hard braking pushes that to five, a visibly different pattern rather than just a light switching on.
Visor and Pinlock
Fogging is dealt with before it starts: every Skwal i3 ships with a Pinlock 70 insert already fitted to its Optical Class 1 visor, part of Shark's VZ400 family shared with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup. The lens tapers from 3 mm at the edge to 2.2 mm through the field of view, with a moulded vortex generator, adjustable Pinlock tension, anti-scratch coating, and a central grip with central locking for tool-free changes. Photochromic tinting isn't available from the factory — the IRID list covers only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.
Sun visor and everyday usability
Everyday usability on the Skwal i3 comes down to small things done properly: a crown-slider internal sun visor that drops in one motion, an interior reworked to fit glasses without pressure, and a shell ready for a Sharktooth or SENA intercom with no modification required. Shark backs it all with a 5-year warranty.
Wind noise, honestly
Ask for a decibel number on the Skwal i3 and the honest answer is that none exists in any source we'd use. What we can report, from an independent long-term review, is that the helmet's noise levels weren't found to be unduly loud, with no single part of the shell generating localised wind noise — attributed to a substantial neck roll and a generous chin curtain doing their sealing job properly.
Mekarium Matte, described honestly
a matte black shell with grey tonal shading and a red diagonal accent stripe along the side. The matte coat means less visible shine and fewer obvious scuffs, though certain solvents can dull it further than intended, so a dedicated helmet cleaner is worth the small extra cost.
The case for this decor is strongest for someone riding in mixed traffic on a regular basis — the LED brake light does its most useful work exactly where following distances are short and reaction time matters, which describes most urban and suburban commuting more than an open motorway.
Fit across the size run
From XS up to XXL, six sizes cover the Skwal i3 range. We haven't found a confirmed source stating how many separate shells that spans, so no number appears here — check the size chart directly rather than relying on an assumption either way.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Where does this decor sit against the rest of Shark's road range? Above the Ridill 2 (€189.99 upward) and the D-Skwal 3 (€219.99 upward), and above the non-LED Skwal Cup (€269.99–€339.99) too. This decor is €349.99. Only the Skwal i Cup, from €329.99, shares its LED brake light — and that shared feature is most of what the extra cost over the Cup buys.
Spare parts, later
One visor family covers five current Shark helmets — the Skwal i3, D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — which keeps replacement stock simple: a scratched VZ400 lens or a tired Pinlock 70 insert is a shared part, available under the same number regardless of which of the five you're riding.
What this helmet does not have
Before you buy, not after: this decor carries no SHARP rating (only the older Skwal and Skwal 2 have been tested by that programme, and their four stars don't transfer here), no FIM suffix on its ECE 22.06 certification, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, and no IRID photochromic compatibility. The closure is a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring. The genuinely open question is the brake light's legal status on German public roads — Shark itself doesn't assert road-legal status, its manual instead tells riders to verify their own country's legislation, and the light carries no E-mark or homologation number in any documentation available. We found no source, manufacturer or independent, that resolves this either way, and we're not going to resolve it here by assertion. If certainty matters to you, ask a TÜV or vehicle-approval authority before you rely on it instead of your bike's own brake light.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
The battery inside is not something you replace — it's sealed in, charged through a USB-C cable stored in the neck protection, and Shark quotes roughly three hours to fill it for about twelve hours of use in flashing-light mode. Idle for 60 seconds and the system sleeps; idle for 72 hours and it shuts down completely, both automatic. Manual, verbatim on a near-flat battery: it switches on but turns off again almost instantly, and needs to be charged before it will stay lit.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
Eighteen impact points. Multiple speeds per test. An oblique-impact anvil that twists the shell instead of dropping it straight. A Brain Injury Criterion for rotational forces. A visor, Pinlock insert and comms unit fitted throughout. That's ECE 22.06 in five facts, and it's what every Skwal i3 is certified to — mandatory in the EU for newly homologated helmets since January 2024, and a genuine step up from the old 22.05 standard's five fixed-speed drops onto a bare shell. The certificate reads 2206 with no FIM suffix: this is a road standard, not a competition one.
Shell, closure and ventilation
Underneath the graphics, the Skwal i3 is a fairly conventional construction done well: injection-moulded Lexan polycarbonate outer shell, multi-density EPS liner grading its firmness across the shape, and a micrometric buckle instead of a double-D ring for the closure — ratcheting to an exact tension rather than relying on fixed holes. Air comes in through front intakes and leaves through rear extractors in a multichannel layout counted independently at four intakes, two exhausts.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
1,570 g, per Shark's own figures for the Skwal i3's smallest shell — and independently, a long-term press review quotes the same number, though without saying which size it's testing, so treat both as referring to the lighter end of the size run rather than a guaranteed number for every size. Weight compounds over a ride rather than announcing itself immediately, and within our own catalogue of road-legal full-face helmets, most sit between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g — the Skwal i3 comfortably inside that band.
What's included
The Skwal i3, Pinlock 70 insert already mounted rather than shipped separately, the LED system's USB-C cable stored in the neck protection, and Shark's documentation — warranty card and LED manual together, the latter carrying the note about checking your own country's rules.
