DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Skwal i3 is the helmet Shark built around one idea: being seen matters as much as being protected. Integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, are the reason this exists at all — what Shark calls the world's first production helmet with active brake lights built into the shell itself. This decor, Blank SP Matte, wears a plain matte black shell with only a thin grey “Intelligent Visibility” line across the crown and no other graphic. Everything underneath the paint is the same Skwal i3 engineering across the range, from the light system down to the certification.
How the brake light actually works
The brake light itself is simple physics wrapped in electronics: a three-axis accelerometer built into the shell notices deceleration the instant it happens, with no pairing to the bike and no Bluetooth link to lose. Slow down normally and the red rear LEDs pulse three times a second; brake hard and the rate jumps to five times a second, a faster flash that reads as urgency to the driver behind rather than just a light that happens to be on.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
That accelerometer and those LEDs need power, and Shark's answer is a sealed, non-replaceable battery charged over USB-C through a cable stored in the neck protection — about three hours for a full charge, good for roughly twelve hours of use in flashing-light mode. Leave the helmet still for 60 seconds and the system drops into standby; leave it untouched for 72 hours and it shuts down completely. Run the battery down to nearly nothing and the manual is blunt about what happens: it can still switch on, but turns off again almost immediately, and needs to go back on charge before the light works again.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
Every Skwal i3 carries ECE 22.06, mandatory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024 and a bigger jump than the version number suggests: eighteen impact points instead of the old standard's five, at a range of speeds instead of one, plus an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that loads the shell with twisting force rather than a straight drop. It also scores a Brain Injury Criterion for rotational energy, and tests the helmet complete with visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit — how people actually ride. The certificate reads 2206, no FIM suffix: road approval, not competition homologation.
Shell, closure and ventilation
The shell is Lexan-brand polycarbonate, injection-moulded, paired with a multi-density EPS liner that grades its firmness across the shape. It closes with a micrometric buckle — a ratchet strap that clicks to an exact, repeatable tension rather than a D-ring's fixed holes, adjustable in seconds with gloves on. Air moves through a multichannel layout, front intakes to rear extractors, counted independently at four intakes and two exhausts.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
Shark quotes 1,570 g (give or take) for the Skwal i3, a figure given for the first, smallest shell size rather than a mid-range M — an independent long-term review cites the same number without pinning down which size it refers to either, so riders in the smaller sizes should sit close to it while L-to-XXL likely runs a little above. That matters because a helmet's weight is carried by the neck for the entire time it's on, and the gap between a light lid and a heavy one compounds hour after hour rather than showing up in the first five minutes. Within our own catalogue of road-legal full-face helmets, most weights fall between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g, and the Skwal i3 sits comfortably inside that range.
Visor and Pinlock
The visor belongs to Shark's VZ400 family, shared with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup: Optical Class 1, a Pinlock 70 insert already fitted against fogging, thickness tapering from 3 mm at the edge to 2.2 mm through the field, a moulded vortex generator, adjustable tension, an anti-scratch coating, and tool-free removal via a central grip with central locking. It isn't on Shark's IRID photochromic list, which covers only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro — a tinted lens here is an aftermarket part, not a factory option.
Sun visor and everyday usability
An internal sun visor drops from a slider on the crown, useful the moment low sun hits on the ride home, and the shell takes a Sharktooth or SENA intercom unit without modification. The interior has been reworked around glasses, giving arms somewhere to sit without pressure or discomfort, and the whole thing is backed by Shark's 5-year warranty.
Wind noise, honestly
We don't have a decibel figure for the Skwal i3 and won't invent one. What an independent long-term review does report is that noise levels 'aren't unduly loud' and that no single part of the shell generates localised wind noise on its own — helped by a substantial neck roll on both sides and a generous chin curtain that close off the draughts most helmets let through at the base. How quiet any specific ride feels still depends on the bike's screen and the rider's position, which is exactly why a single number wouldn't tell the whole story anyway.
The Blank SP Matte finish, in use
This decor is a matte finish, which hides fine scuffs better than gloss but needs a touch more care with certain cleaners. On the shell it's a plain matte black shell with only a thin grey “Intelligent Visibility” line across the crown and no other graphic, worn on the road as a design that reads clearly at a glance rather than needing explanation.
This decor suits a commuter who rides in traffic more than on open roads, where the rear LED doing its job at every junction matters more than the graphic itself. The visibility argument is strongest exactly there: a driver behind you, in stop-start traffic, sees a light that pulses harder the harder you brake, rather than a passive shape they have to notice on their own.
Fit across the size run
Six sizes run from XS to XXL. Shark doesn't publish how many physical shell moulds that spans on this particular helmet, and rather than guess at a number the way some retailers do, we're leaving it unstated — the size chart tells you which size fits, regardless of what the internal shell engineering looks like.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Inside Shark's current road range, the Ridill 2 opens the ladder from €189.99, the D-Skwal 3 follows from €219.99, and the Skwal Cup runs €269.99 to €339.99 depending on decor without any LED at all. This decor lists at €319.99. A step further up, the Skwal i Cup starts from €329.99 — both LED helmets cost more than the Cup mainly because of the light system itself.
Spare parts, later
A scratched or fogged visor doesn't retire this helmet: the Skwal i3 shares its VZ400 visor family, and the Pinlock 70 insert itself, with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, all listed under the same Shark part numbers — a replacement is a spare part, not a reason to buy a new helmet.
What this helmet does not have
Said plainly, so nothing is discovered after delivery: no SHARP star rating exists for the Skwal i3 — the UK programme tested the original Skwal and Skwal 2, not this LED model, and those four stars belong to a different, older helmet. Homologation is ECE 22.06 only, no FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts and no IRID photochromic compatibility. The closure is a micrometric buckle, not a double-D ring. On the brake light: whether it may be operated on German public roads isn't settled by Shark selling it here. The manual tells the rider to check their own country's legislation, gives no E-mark for the light, and no source found — manufacturer or independent — confirms or denies StVZO conformity. Treat it as a genuine grey area, not a confirmed yes.
In the box
The helmet itself, arriving with the Pinlock 70 insert already fitted to the visor rather than left loose in a bag, the USB-C charging cable for the LED system stowed inside the neck protection where it lives day to day, and Shark's documentation covering the 5-year warranty and the LED system's own instructions — including the line about checking your own country's rules before relying on the light.
