DescriptionThe whole story▼
Lead with the light, because everything else about the Skwal i3 is a well-executed but otherwise familiar full-face helmet underneath it: integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, running off the helmet's own accelerometer rather than the bike's electrics — the world's first production helmet built this way, Shark says. Light-Blur covers that system in a black shell with the same motion-blur graphic rendered in a teal-to-green gradient instead of blue.
How the brake light actually works
The sensor doing the work is a three-axis accelerometer, sealed into the shell and reading deceleration the moment it starts, independent of the bike's own electrics. Rear LEDs answer in red: three flashes per second under normal braking, five under hard braking. Front LEDs answer in white, adding a second, forward-facing point of visibility that has nothing to do with the brake signal and everything to do with simply being seen.
Spare parts, later
The practical upside of a shared visor platform: when the Skwal i3's VZ400 lens eventually scratches through, or the Pinlock 70 insert clouds with age, the replacement part is the same one Shark stocks for the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — not a helmet-specific rarity.
What this helmet does not have
It would be easy to let the LED feature carry the whole page and skip the caveats — here they are instead. No SHARP star rating exists for this model (the older Skwal and Skwal 2 have four stars each, tested separately, not inherited). ECE 22.06 with no FIM suffix. No MIPS, no EQRS, no tear-off posts, no IRID compatibility. A micrometric buckle, not a double-D ring. And the brake light's legal status on German roads: genuinely unclear. Shark's manual tells riders to verify their own country's legislation rather than confirming compliance, provides no E-mark for the light, and no source found here — Shark's own or independent press — resolves the question definitively.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
There is one battery, it is not replaceable, and it lives on a roughly three-hour USB-C charge for about twelve hours of flashing-light runtime, using a cable stored in the neck protection. Automatic standby kicks in after 60 seconds without movement, and a full shutdown follows 72 hours of inactivity. Shark's manual describes the near-empty state plainly: the system can still be switched on, but shuts off again almost instantly, and needs charging before the light works again.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
Testing a helmet with nothing on it flatters the result. ECE 22.06 doesn't allow that: the Skwal i3 is struck with its visor, Pinlock insert and a mounted comms unit in place, at eighteen impact points and multiple speeds, including an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that twists the shell rather than dropping it flat. A Brain Injury Criterion adds a rotational-force score that the older 22.05 standard lacked entirely. Mandatory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024, and this certificate carries no FIM suffix — 2206, road approval only.
Shell, closure and ventilation
The construction is straightforward: injection-moulded Lexan polycarbonate shell, multi-density EPS liner grading its firmness through the structure, micrometric buckle instead of a double-D ring for the closure, and a multichannel ventilation path running front intakes to rear extractors — counted independently at four intakes and two exhausts.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
The smallest Skwal i3 shell weighs about 1,570 g according to Shark, a figure an independent long-term review also arrives at without pinning down which size — so it's likely closer to a floor than a fixed number across the whole XS-to-XXL run, with larger sizes on the larger shell probably running a touch heavier. Against the roughly 1,250–1,800 g spread of road-legal full-face helmets in our own catalogue, it sits toward the middle.
Visor and Pinlock
Adjustable tension on the Pinlock insert sounds minor until a cold morning proves otherwise, and it's one of the standard features of the VZ400-family visor fitted to the Skwal i3, D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup alike. Optical Class 1, a moulded vortex generator, a lens varying from 3 mm to 2.2 mm, anti-scratch coating, and tool-free removal via a central grip with central locking round out the spec. Photochromic tinting stays outside the factory options — the IRID list runs only to the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.
Sun visor and everyday usability
No modification is needed to fit a Sharktooth or SENA intercom to the Skwal i3's shell — it's built ready. The internal sun visor drops from a crown slider when low sun hits, and the interior's redesigned fit keeps glasses arms from pressing. A 5-year warranty from Shark backs all of it.
Wind noise, honestly
Sealing, not silence, is what a chin curtain and neck roll actually deliver, and on the Skwal i3 an independent long-term review found both doing that job well — no single localised source of wind noise, and noise levels described as not unduly loud. No decibel figure exists for this helmet, and this isn't the place to invent one.
Light-Blur: the practical read
a black shell with the same motion-blur graphic rendered in a teal-to-green gradient instead of blue, on a gloss shell. The practical trade-off with any gloss coat on this range is the usual one: more shine, less forgiveness for daily knocks.
This decor is built for the ride you do five days a week, not the one you do twice a year — the LED brake light's value scales with how much time you spend in traffic where a driver's attention is divided.
Fit across the size run
Sizes run from XS to XXL, six in total, on the Skwal i3. We don't have a confirmed number for how many shells that spans on this particular model, and we'd rather leave the figure out than carry one over from a different helmet in the range.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
The Skwal i3 isn't Shark's only road option. From the entry point: Ridill 2 (€189.99+), D-Skwal 3 (€219.99+), Skwal Cup (€269.99–€339.99, no LED). This decor: €349.99. And the Skwal i Cup (€329.99+), which shares this helmet's LED brake light and most of its price premium over the Cup because of it.
Contents on arrival
Nothing to assemble: the Pinlock 70 comes fitted, the USB-C charging cable lives in the neck protection from day one, and the paperwork — 5-year warranty plus LED manual — is included rather than needing a separate download.
