DescriptionThe whole story

Matt Nardo grey is the finish that asks the least of you over several years of daily use. It hides city dirt better than anything else here and is meaningfully more visible than black in the flat light a city actually provides.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

The useful way to choose a helmet is by where you actually ride rather than by which is theoretically safest. In town, at city speeds, on short journeys made several times a day, an open-face is the helmet that gets worn rather than left on a shelf.

🔵 At sustained speed or over distance it is the wrong tool — no chin bar, and no weather protection either.

About the Nardo Grey finish

Value rather than colour decides both how dirty a helmet looks and how easily it is seen, and a mid grey sits at the useful point on that scale for both at once. Road film, dust and dried water marks all show least here — they read as haze on black and as obvious marks on white. And a driver's eye resolves a mid-value object against dark tarmac appreciably faster than a dark one. Neither property is dramatic alone; together they make this the most practical version in the range. 🔵 Matt is washed rather than polished; there is no clear coat to buff a scuff out of.

Polyfusion, two shells and three approvals

At 1325 g ±50 this is a genuinely light helmet, and the reason is simply that there is no chin bar, no outer visor mechanism and no composite layup to pay for. Weight is where an open-face wins without trying.

The shell is Polyfusion thermoplastic in two outer sizes, certified to ECE 22-06, DOT FMVSS 218 and NBR7471:2015.

The sun visor, the peak — and the clear visor that is not there

🔵 The single most important thing to understand about this helmet's optics: the drop-down shield is lightly tinted and it is the only screen supplied. Nexx does not include a clear visor, and the box contains helmet plus peak.

In daylight it does the job well. At night, in rain or in fog, you are riding with your face exposed unless you add eyewear.

Airflow on an open-face

🔵 Do not expect adjustable ventilation across the range. Nexx fits a two-stage top vent to some Y.10 versions only, and describes the rest as having an active system without a user control.

For an urban helmet used at city speeds that is a reasonable specification; it is worth knowing before you expect a slider.

Interior, glasses and the buckle

🔵 A new helmet should feel firm but never painful. The liner beds in over the first few hours and again over the first season, so a helmet that is perfect in the shop will usually be loose by the summer's end.

Start tighter than comfortable. A helmet you can rotate on your head by hand is too big, whatever the tape says.

Intercom — and the 45 mm limit

🔵 Bear in mind what an intercom is competing with on this helmet. A jet at city speeds is quiet enough for a conversation without one, and loud enough at 80 km/h that speaker volume becomes the limit rather than the system.

The provision is there and it is universal, for audio sets up to 45 mm.

1325 grams, and the rest of the honest list

Cold weather is the Y.10's real limitation rather than noise or weight. There is no way to close the face opening, and below about 10 °C a neck tube becomes essential rather than optional.

🔵 In its season, at 1325 g with nothing pressing anywhere, there is very little more pleasant to wear.

Choosing the right size

On an open-face the fit is checked differently from a full-face. Push the helmet forward and back with the strap fastened: it should move the skin of your forehead rather than sliding over it. Then check that it does not lift at the back when you nod.

🔵 Two outer shell sizes cover XXS to XXL; measure 1–2 cm above the eyebrows.

When something wears out

Helmets are consumables with a long life rather than permanent objects. Every manufacturer, Nexx included, recommends replacement after around five years of use regardless of condition — and immediately after any real impact, because the EPS crushes once and does not recover.

Between those two points, everything you touch on this helmet is replaceable.

Where it sits in Nexx's range

🔵 Against Nexx's premium jet, the X.G30, this helmet gives up a composite shell and gains around 100 € of headroom. Both are open-face and both leave the chin unprotected.

If the jet format is what you want, the question is budget rather than capability.

“A clean, understated jet with a proper drop-down sun visor and a wide adjustable shield, at 1,225 g. It has less presence than the Shoei J.O2 but costs a third as much and is easier to live with day to day.”
