Plain Black is the entry point to the X.WED3 and the version that makes the fewest claims. Same Recoil visor, same Anti-Vibration EPS, same F.R.S. cheek pads as the carbon helmets above it — a different shell and no graphic.

Anti-Vibration EPS — two shells and a rubber layer

Anti-Vibration EPS is the feature that separates this helmet from every other adventure lid on the shelf. A rubber layer sits between the inner and outer EPS, letting the inner shell — the part touching your head — micro-move independently.

The purpose is the vibration that air turbulence transmits into the helmet at speed. Less of it reaches your head, which over a long day is a fatigue question rather than a comfort one.

About the matt black finish

An adventure helmet is handled constantly — carried by the peak, set on panniers, wiped with whatever is to hand at a fuel stop — and a matt finish absorbs that low-level marking far better than gloss, because there is no clear coat for a scuff to catch in. The X.WED3's shell has more surface than most: peak, sun visor housing, goggle-strap holder and a wide aperture all read separately, and a single flat colour pulls them into one object. 🔵 It is the least conspicuous version in a range that includes several deliberately bright ones, and this helmet is often ridden on unlit roads far from home. Matt is washed rather than polished — there is no gloss layer to buff a mark out of.

The X-Matrix2 shell and the X-Foam bumpers

This version uses the X-Matrix2 shell — multiaxial fibreglass combined with 3D organic fibre, Kevlar and aramid, with carbon reinforcement. Nexx puts it at around 35 % stronger in expansion and flex resistance than ordinary fibreglass.

Claimed weight is 1790 g against 1725 g for the carbon version. X-Foam EPP bumpers cover the chin and sides on both.

F.R.S.® — both cheek pads at once

F.R.S.® — the Fast Release System — lets both cheek pads come out at once, without tools. Lift the rubberised arms that lock the buttons on each side, slide the red buttons back, and both pads release together.

The everyday use is cleaning. The important one is emergency removal: a first responder can take the helmet off an injured rider with far less movement of the head and neck.

Recoil visor, sun visor and the second shield in the box

The Recoil Visor System uses spring-loaded base side-plates that pull the visor back against twin-lip beads automatically — an airtight seal made by the mechanism rather than by how hard you push it shut. It works independently of the peak mount.

A Pinlock® 70 MaxVision lens is included, a second visor comes in the box, and the internal sun visor is 18 % larger than the previous generation's, dropping to just above the bridge of the nose.

Seven intakes — and a measurement that disagrees

On paper the ventilation is comprehensive: seven closable intakes and four exhausts, plus the patent-pending Mid Airflow Chamber, which uses the gap between the inner and outer EPS to move fresh air around the head while hot air leaves through the rear.

🔵 Independent measurement disagrees sharply. A scored road test rated the cooling 1 out of 5 — the lowest mark in its scale. We are printing that rather than the brochure.

How loud it actually is

Noise is measured rather than guessed: an independent road test recorded 103 dB on average at 130 km/h and scored the X.WED3 3 out of 5.

🔵 That is normal for a peaked helmet. Removing the peak for a long transfer helps, and earplugs on any fast day are equipment rather than an accessory.

Interior, materials and fit

The crown pad is Air Cumbs, stitched with an alveolar mesh that holds a fresh-air chamber between the EPS and the padding, and the liner is X-Mart Dry. Up front the trim is faux leather with large ventilation-mesh inserts.

Fit was independently found true to size, with an intermediate-to-long oval head shape and comfort scored 3.5/5.

1790 grams, and the rest of the honest list

Nexx quotes 1790 g ±50 for the X-Matrix2 shell — 65 g above the carbon version and heavy by any standard. The two-part EPS with its rubber interlayer is where much of that goes.

🔵 The honest list: no SHARP rating, no ADAC or Snell result, measured ventilation 1/5, measured noise 103 dB. Weight is the price of the Anti-Vibration construction.

Goggles, comms, camera and spare parts

The goggle-strap holder is built into the rear shell rather than added as a strap — it improves goggle placement and folds away when unused. On a helmet that also has a visor, that is the detail that makes the dusty-going configuration work.

Comms are X-COM3-ready: earphones, battery, cable slots, microphone and Bluetooth 5.2 integrate fully rather than being clamped on.
