White with orange over the carbon shell is the most useful KEYO for riding that genuinely leaves the tarmac. Orange is the colour the eye resolves fastest against earth and foliage; white keeps the helmet working everywhere else.

Anti-Vibration EPS — two shells and a rubber layer

The liner in this helmet is two shells rather than one, separated by rubber. That construction is the reason the X.WED3 is heavier than most adventure helmets and the reason it behaves differently at speed.

🔵 It is a comfort system. The impact protection comes from the EPS itself and from the X-Foam bumpers at the chin and sides.

About the KEYO White Orange graphic

Being seen off-road is a different problem from being seen in traffic. It happens in dust, in dappled tree shade and in the flat light at the end of a long day, and it usually matters most to the rider behind you rather than to a car. Orange holds up in all three conditions where red flattens out and dark colours disappear entirely. Setting it against a white ground rather than a dark one keeps the helmet doing its job on the road sections too, which on an adventure trip are most of the distance. 🔵 Both pigments fade faster than dark ones under sustained UV; a season strapped to a mirror in the sun will show.

The X-PRO Carbon shell and the X-Foam bumpers

🔵 What carbon does not do is make a helmet safer by itself. The approvals here are identical between the two shells, and so are the EPS structure, the X-Foam bumpers and every feature. What it does is take off 65 g, which on a 1725 g helmet is a marginal rather than transformative saving.

Whether that is worth around 180 € is a fair question to ask before choosing.

F.R.S.® — both cheek pads at once

🔵 A helmet's cheek pads are what hold it on your head once the strap is undone, which is why they have to be removed before a helmet can be taken off an injured rider safely. F.R.S.® does both at once, without tools.

Rubberised locking arms, red slide buttons, both sides together. Simple enough for someone who has never seen the helmet before.

Recoil visor, sun visor and the second shield in the box

The internal sun visor on this generation reaches 18 % further than before, down to just above the bridge of the nose. That last centimetre is what stops the low sun coming in under the edge, which is precisely when a sun visor matters.

Above it, the Recoil outer visor seals against twin-lip beads and carries an included Pinlock 70 MaxVision lens.

Seven intakes — and a measurement that disagrees

Airflow only happens if there is somewhere for the air to go, and four exhausts against seven intakes is a workable ratio on paper. The rear outlets sit where the pressure is lowest, which is what should keep the intakes flowing rather than merely open.

🔵 What an independent road test measured was a cooling result scored 1/5. Design and outcome do not agree here.

How loud it actually is

🔵 Setting expectations honestly: this is not a quiet helmet and was never going to be. A peak, a wide aperture and seven intakes are three separate noise sources, and all three exist because they make the helmet work off-road.

Independent measurement: 103 dB at 130 km/h, scored 3/5.

Interior, materials and fit

🔵 Fit is the specification that matters most and the one no description settles for you. A loose helmet moves under braking and rotates in a crash; a tight one produces a headache at forty minutes.

Try it on and keep it on for ten minutes. It should not be possible to rotate the helmet on your head by hand.

1725 grams, and the rest of the honest list

The full honest list in one place: heavy at 1725 g, measured ventilation of 1/5, measured noise of 103 dB, no SHARP rating, and a manufacturer's „200,000 km and 60 adventure tests" claim that no independent source verifies.

Against that: Anti-Vibration EPS, F.R.S., a second visor, a Pinlock lens, an internal sun visor and four market approvals.

Goggles, comms, camera and spare parts

An adventure helmet is a repairable object and that matters a long way from a dealer. Peak, extensor, visor, Pinlock lens, cheek pads, crown pad and chin-strap covers are all separate parts on the X.WED3.

🔵 Carry a spare visor rather than a spare helmet — it is the part that ends a trip. This helmet ships with a second one already.
