The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Taking the DVT engine out to 1,262 cc and moving its torque lower turned the Multistrada from a fast bike that could tour into a touring bike that happens to be fast. That reordering matters at the airbox, because touring is the one duty cycle in which a filter works continuously rather than occasionally. Two hours at a steady high load is not a peak measurement taken on a dyno; it is an uninterrupted draw with no coasting and no time at idle to recover. PM127S is a woven polyester panel with the area to absorb it.
Key Features
- Dry polyester throughout, so heat in the box has nothing to carry downstream
- Close to twice the cloth area of other performance panels, for hours of uninterrupted flow
- Sits in the standard airbox in place of the paper element, mapping untouched
- Restored with compressed air rather than replaced at each interval
- Designed by Sprint Filter to last as long as the motorcycle
- Two years of warranty from the purchase date
Sustained is a different measurement from peak
Filter restriction is usually quoted as a figure captured over a few seconds. A rider covering six hundred kilometres in a day never meets that figure. What they meet is a long stretch in which the cost of the panel is continuous, in a box that has been warm for hours. Both of those observations point to the same two properties: enough area that the continuous restriction stays low, and a dry medium so that sustained heat has nothing to work on. A replacement panel does not change the engine's output; it changes how steady that output's supply of air remains.
Eighty microns or seven, with nothing between
For the 1260 generation Sprint Filter's ladder is unusually short. There is this weave at 80 microns, and there is the extreme nonwoven at 7 microns for deep dust and desert use — the 14-micron middle step catalogued for the earlier 1200 is simply not listed here. Finer holds more back and passes far less; the trade is real in both directions. For road and long-distance work the standard weave is the balanced end of it, and for most riders the only sensible one.
Care and cleaning
Routine care needs an air line and a minute: apply it to the clean face and blow outward until the cloth is clear. Water is for the exceptional case — hand warm, mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clean, then dried completely in moving air with no heat involved at any point, and no flame. The panel returns to the box dry. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is attached in the Downloads tab.
