The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The 2015 Multistrada brought Desmodromic Variable Timing, and that single change is why this generation asks something unusual of its airbox. Variable timing exists to widen the useful band — to let one engine behave like a docile twin low down and a hard one near the top. Widening the band widens the range of airflow the intake has to deliver, at both ends, competently. PM127S is the woven polyester panel for that box, and breadth rather than peak is the property that matters to it.
Key Features
- Dry polyester cloth — no film to be mobilised when the box runs warm
- Roughly twice the medium area of a conventional performance element
- Slots into the standard housing without adapters, ducting changes or a reflash
- Serviced with an air line; washed with water only when it needs it
- Intended by its maker to remain in the bike for the machine's working life
- Two years of warranty, counted from the purchase date
A wider band is a wider range of flow
The pressure a filter costs the engine is not a single number stamped on the box; it grows with the volume being drawn through the cloth. An engine tuned to be tractable at low revs and eager at high ones visits both extremes as a matter of routine, and a partly loaded panel penalises the top of that range hardest, because that is where the volume is greatest. The result is a motorcycle that still pulls politely through town while quietly giving back some of the urgency DVT was fitted to provide.
Three versions, one induction path
Ducati separated the base 1200, the S with its semi-active suspension and the D|air with its airbag link by electronics and hardware, not by airbox — all three take this element, as do the 950 and the whole 1260 family that followed. The engine's output is unaffected by fitting it: no panel filter raises peak power, and this one is not offered as a way to. What it offers is a restriction that stays where the factory put it.
Care and cleaning
Servicing is short. Air first: compressed air on the inner face, blown outward, until the cloth stops giving anything up. Water second, and rarely: hand warm, a mild detergent, rinsed through until it runs clean, then left to dry thoroughly in air. Never with heat and never over a flame, both of which ruin the weave permanently. It is refitted dry, with no oiling stage at any point in the process.
