TC-5 is the dark reading of the Aventure graphic — the same design as the TC-2, executed so the shell stays black and the decor works as tone rather than as colour. It is the version for riders who want the pattern without the announcement.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

🔵 Read the approval carefully. „ECE 22.06" on this helmet means it meets the current European standard for open-face helmets — the test schedule for its category. It does not mean the helmet was tested for chin impact, because there is no chin bar to test.

Everything else the standard covers — shell, liner, retention, visor, abrasion — it meets in full, and to the 2026 revision rather than the old 22.05.

About the Aventure TC-5 graphic

Shoei's TC codes exist because the same decor is produced in several colour combinations, and the code is the only reliable way to identify which one you have. That matters more than it sounds: if you ever need a matching peak, a replacement visor in the same tint or a spare part ordered against your helmet, the TC number is what the parts catalogue works from, not the word „Aventure". It is on the label under the padding as well as on the box. As a finish, this is the quietest way to have a graphic on the J•O2 — the design is fully present but reads at conversational volume, and it keeps the low-key relationship with a classic motorcycle that a bright decor gives up. Conspicuity is correspondingly low; in year-round urban use a pale solid does more for you.

AIM, four shells and a double-D ring

Full ECE 22.06 approval means the whole current schedule, not a subset: impact at several energies and points, oblique impact, abrasion, retention system strength, visor optics. The J•O2 meets it in the open-face category, over an AIM fibreglass composite shell and a multi-density EPS core.

🔵 It is worth checking the standard on any classic-styled helmet you compare this with — a good number are still sold to the previous 22.05 revision.

The CJ-4 visor — and the Pinlock that does not exist for it

The visor mechanism is deliberately simple: no ratchet, no micro-adjustment, no lock. Three positions, a firm detent at each, and a base plate you can remove by hand. On a helmet designed around the idea that less hardware is better, that consistency is the point.

🔵 The consequence of that simplicity is the absence of Pinlock pins — the CJ-4 takes no anti-fog insert, in any tint.

Press studs, peaks and goggles

The V-480 shield is the least known of the options and worth a mention: a bubble-style shield that fits the same forehead studs, giving a different silhouette again from the flat peaks.

Alongside it, the Classic, GT and Retro MX peaks cover the more conventional looks, and all of them are shared with the Shoei EX-Zero — which means a considerably wider parts pool than a single-model accessory would have.

Ventilation without a single vent

Ventilation on this helmet should be judged by what it prevents rather than what it delivers. It prevents a saturated liner, prevents the stale warmth that builds under a closed shell in traffic, and prevents the visor misting when you stop — which matters here because no anti-fog insert is available.

It does all of that through an integrated path with no external hardware.

Interior, trim and getting the fit right

🔵 A new helmet should be slightly tighter than comfortable. The padding compresses with use, and a helmet that feels perfect in the shop will usually be loose by the end of the first season.

If it ends up too loose, thicker cheek pads bring it back rather than requiring a new helmet. All of the interior is removable, washable and available as separate parts.

Around 1150 grams, and the rest of the honest list

🔵 Cold weather is the J•O2's real limitation, more than noise or weight. There is no way to close the ventilation and no way to close the face opening; below about 10 °C a neck tube becomes essential and below freezing the helmet stops being sensible.

In its season, at around 1150 g with no communication hardware adding to it, there is very little that is more pleasant to wear.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

🔵 One comparison that comes up often and should not. The J•O2 has no SHARP rating — and neither does any other jet helmet, because the British programme does not test open-face helmets at all. An absent rating here means untested, not poorly rated.

Within Shoei's range, the tested models are the full-face and flip-up ones: X-SPR PRO, GT-Air3 and Neotec 3.

When something wears out

🔵 A word on visor care, because it prevents most of the visor sales we make. Never wipe a dry visor — road dust is abrasive and dragging it across the surface leaves permanent fine scratches that catch headlights at night. Wet it first, always.

When one does need replacing, all six CJ-4 tints are stocked, including the photochromic version.
