DescriptionThe whole story

Please note: sale to France is prohibited.

Laguna Blue puts two blues on one shell — a deep base with a lighter shade worked over it — and it is the one solid-adjacent finish in this range that reads as a design rather than as a colour. On a plain dome, a tonal split is the only styling available.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

There is no version of this helmet that protects your jaw, and no amount of engineering elsewhere changes that. What the J•O2 does instead is do the open-face job properly: a genuine AIM shell rather than a cheap one, full ECE 22.06 approval in its category, and the retention system Shoei uses on its racing helmets.

🔵 Nothing about the safety is nostalgic — but nothing about it covers the chin either.

About the Laguna Blue finish

There is nothing to hang a graphic on here: no spoiler, no vent covers, no chin bar. So a two-tone treatment on a jet has to work purely as areas of colour on a curve, and this one does it by keeping both shades in the same family. The effect from a distance is a single blue that changes as the helmet turns; up close it resolves into two. Blue also happens to be the most forgiving colour on a gloss finish — it holds less contrast against road film than black and shows less dirt than any pale shade, which puts it in the middle of the maintenance range rather than at either end. Conspicuity is better than the dark solids, without the visual weight of a full graphic. If you want colour on this helmet but not a decal, this is the one.

AIM, four shells and a double-D ring

AIM stands for Advanced Integrated Matrix, and the important word is „integrated": several different fibre materials are combined in the layup rather than laminating one type of glass repeatedly. That lets Shoei vary stiffness across the shell and keep the finished weight at around 1150 g without going to carbon.

Underneath, the EPS liner is built from elements of differing density; the closure is a double-D ring.

The CJ-4 visor — and the Pinlock that does not exist for it

🔵 A note for anyone coming from a Shoei full-face. The GT-Air3, Neotec 3 and X-SPR PRO all take a Pinlock EVO lens, and it is easy to assume this one does too. It does not. The CJ-4 has no Pinlock pins and no lens is made for it.

What it has instead: three drop positions, a rounded lower edge, tool-free changes, and six tints including a photochromic option.

Press studs, peaks and goggles

Worth knowing if you are choosing between peaks. A peak on a road helmet is not free: it catches air, and at motorway speed a wide one will pull at your head. The Classic is the shortest and the least affected; the Retro MX is the widest and the most noticeable above about 100 km/h.

All three fit the same three forehead press studs, and all three are shared with the EX-Zero.

Ventilation without a single vent

Humidity, not temperature, is what makes a helmet uncomfortable on a warm day — sweat that cannot evaporate sits in the padding and stays there. The integrated airflow path in the J•O2 is aimed at exactly that: keeping air moving across the interior so the lining dries rather than saturates.

Everything below the brow line is handled by the opening, which is the most effective ventilation system ever fitted to a helmet.

Interior, trim and getting the fit right

The trim around the face opening is imitation smooth and nubuck leather, and it does a job as well as setting the look: it is the part of the helmet in constant contact with your face and jawline, and a soft edge there is the difference between a helmet you keep on and one you take off at every stop.

Behind it, the whole interior is removable and washable, and the pads come in several thicknesses.

Around 1150 grams, and the rest of the honest list

A helmet you can wear all day is a helmet you will actually use, and around 1150 g is the number that makes that true. It is also low enough that the helmet stays put at town speeds without needing the strap uncomfortably tight.

🔵 Do not expect intercom compatibility. Nothing in the shell or padding is designed for it — no speaker recesses, no routing.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

The Glamster06 is the helmet most J•O2 shoppers also look at, and the comparison is straightforward. Same retro design language, same brand, similar money — but the Glamster is a full-face with a chin bar and this is not.

If the open face is what you want, this is the one. If you want the look and would rather keep your jaw covered, buy the Glamster06 instead.

When something wears out

Peaks are the accessory that changes this helmet most, and all three are stocked: the short Classic, the longer GT, and the wide Retro MX. All of them fit the three forehead press studs, and all of them also fit the Shoei EX-Zero.

Alongside them, CJ-4 visors in six tints and the full range of interior padding in several thicknesses.
