DescriptionThe whole story▼
Please note: sale to France is prohibited.
Garnet Metallic is a dark red with flake in it, which makes it a very different thing from a bright red helmet. In shade it goes almost brown; in direct sun the metallic lifts and it turns into a jewel tone. It is the most changeable finish of the thirteen.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
🔵 One sentence that should not be buried: the chin and jaw area takes a substantial share of impacts in real-world motorcycle crashes, and this helmet has no chin bar over it.
That is not a criticism of the J•O2, which is an extremely well made example of what it is. It is the single fact that should decide whether an open-face is right for the riding you do.
About the Garnet Metallic finish
Metallic flake needs curvature to work, and a jet shell is nothing but curvature — one continuous dome with no vent housings or spoiler breaking it up. That makes this the finish that shows the helmet's shape best, because the flake catches differently across every part of the curve as it turns. Garnet is also a deep enough red that it avoids the problem bright reds have on a classic helmet, where the colour reads as sporting rather than as period. Against the imitation leather trim it is a genuinely handsome combination. Practically it is a gloss finish with metallic underneath: the same washing discipline as black, slightly better at disguising fine swirls because the flake breaks up reflections, and mid-range conspicuity — better than the dark solids, well short of the pale ones.
AIM, four shells and a double-D ring
The structure is conventional in the best sense: a fibreglass composite outer shell to distribute the load and resist penetration, and a polystyrene inner liner to absorb the energy by crushing. Shoei's contribution is in the detail — AIM combines several fibre types in one layup, and the EPS is assembled from elements that absorb at different rates.
🔵 A crushed liner does not recover. A helmet that has taken a real impact is finished, whatever it looks like from the outside.
The CJ-4 visor — and the Pinlock that does not exist for it
Visor changes are tool-free and quick, which matters more on this helmet than on most because there is no internal sun visor to fall back on. Adapting to light means changing the visor or wearing sunglasses under a raised one — both are easy with an open-face, neither is with a full-face.
🔵 The CJ-4 accepts no Pinlock insert in any tint; the photochromic version is the closest thing to a set-and-forget solution.
Press studs, peaks and goggles
The press studs are the reason this helmet reads as older than it is. Snap fasteners across the brow are a detail from an era before integrated visors, and Shoei kept them not for decoration but because they still work — a peak on three studs is more secure and easier to remove than any modern mount.
Classic, GT and Retro MX peaks are all available and all fit the EX-Zero too.
Ventilation without a single vent
Riders coming from a full-face usually notice two things in the first ten minutes: how much cooler it is, and how much more they can hear. Both come from the same source. The J•O2's integrated ventilation is a secondary contributor — useful for managing the crown and the padding, invisible from the outside.
🔵 The noise is worth planning for: an open-face at speed is loud, and earplugs are not optional on a long ride.
Interior, trim and getting the fit right
Four outer shell sizes do most of the fit work before the padding is involved. Because the shell itself changes size across XS–S, M, L and XL–XXL, the interior does not have to compensate with thick foam on small heads — which is what makes a helmet feel bulky rather than snug.
From there, cheek and centre pads in several thicknesses fine-tune it, and everything is removable and washable.
Around 1150 grams, and the rest of the honest list
Perceived weight and actual weight are different things, and an open-face flatters both. At around 1150 g the J•O2 is genuinely light; because the mass is distributed lower and there is no chin bar out front, it also feels lighter than the figure suggests.
🔵 The absences are real though: no comms provision, no speaker recesses, no Pinlock, and considerable wind noise above about 80 km/h.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
Worth knowing that the J•O2 shares its accessory ecosystem with the EX-Zero — the peaks fit both helmets. That is a larger parts pool than a single-model accessory range, and it means the Classic, GT and Retro MX styles are all readily available rather than obscure special orders.
Everything else in Shoei's range uses entirely different visors and hardware.

When something wears out
🔵 Replacement padding is also the correct answer to a helmet that has become loose. Rather than living with a helmet that moves, fit thicker cheek pads — they are available in several thicknesses specifically for this, and they cost a fraction of a new helmet.
We stock those, the chin strap covers, all six CJ-4 visor tints and all three peak styles.
