DescriptionThe whole story▼
Sand over grey and black is the desert colourway and the only earth-toned finish in the Y.TRAVL range. On a long trip through dry country it is also the most practical.
Peak, aperture and the adventure compromise
The exceptionally wide eye port is what makes this feel like an adventure helmet from the inside. It gives a greater sense of openness than a road full-face, which over a long day in unfamiliar country is worth more than any specification.
🔵 It also admits more air and more noise. That is the trade, and the removable peak lets you unwind part of it.
About the Quest Sand Grey graphic
Earth tones do something no other finish here manages: they hide dust completely, because dust is what they are the colour of. Over a week in dry country the helmet looks the same on the last day as on the first, which neither a white nor a black shell does. The compromise arrives in the conditions earth tones stop helping — a wet European road in November, where a low-saturation mid tone reads as part of the background rather than against it. 🔵 If your riding is mostly northern and mostly tarmac, the orange or neon versions do more for you. If it is dry and remote, this is the one that still looks right at the end.
Polyfusion, two shells and four approvals
Full ECE 22-06 approval means the current schedule rather than the superseded 22.05 — impact at several energies and points, oblique impact, abrasion and retention strength.
🔵 Worth checking on any inexpensive adventure helmet you compare this with; a number are still sold against the older standard.
The visor, the wide eye port and the second shield
The wide eye port is the feature riders notice first on this helmet, and it is a genuine adventure-touring advantage — more peripheral vision when picking a line, and a greater sense of openness over a long day.
🔵 It also admits more air and more noise than a road helmet's aperture. That is part of why the measured noise figure is around 102 dB.
The sun visor and its glove-friendly button
A fixed tinted visor commits you for a whole ride; a drop-down shield does not. On an adventure trip where the light changes between a mountain pass and a valley an hour later, that difference decides whether the helmet works.
🔵 This one blocks 99 % of ultraviolet and operates from an external button sized for gloves.
Two intakes, four exhausts — and a zero-degree measurement
🔵 In stationary traffic no helmet ventilates well, this one included — airflow needs airflow. Where the Y.TRAVL does well is at road speed, which is the condition it was shaped for and the condition most of an adventure trip is spent in.
Two intakes, four exhausts, EPS air channels; measured 0 °C interior delta, scored 4/5.
How loud it actually is
🔵 A quiet adventure helmet would be a badly ventilated one. The openings that produced this helmet's zero-degree cooling result are the same openings that admit noise — and the wide aperture that gives the sense of openness admits more again.
Measured: around 102 dB, 3/5. Standard for the category, in the reviewer's own words.
Interior, retention and fit
If you wear glasses, the 3D liner is cut specifically so spectacle arms pass without pressing — and on a helmet with an exceptionally wide eye port, you are also not looking through the top edge of your lenses at the bottom edge of the visor.
🔵 Everything comes out for washing, and the pads carry Emergency-Strap pulls.
Around 1.8 kilograms, and the rest of the honest list
What you give up at this price is weight and shell material; what you keep is everything else. Two visors, a Pinlock lens, a nose guard, a wind deflector, a removable anti-vibration peak, an internal sun visor and four market approvals.
🔵 The weight is 1805 g measured — the honest cost of that package on a thermoplastic shell.
What is in the box, comms and spare parts
🔵 Check comms fit before buying the comms. X-COM3 is designed into this shell; a third-party unit will work but will not use the cable channels, battery recess or microphone position, and speaker depth varies enough between brands to cause pressure over a long day.
The PRO version adds 2.0 Mesh networking and Harman Kardon sound.
