Primal is the second graphic family on this helmet and takes a harder-edged approach than Quest — blocked, directional shapes rather than expedition styling. In blue, red and grey it is the most colourful version in the range.

Peak, aperture and the adventure compromise

Riders buy adventure helmets to own one helmet rather than two, and the honest version of that is: this one is acceptable on tarmac and acceptable off it, rather than excellent at either.

About the Primal Blue Red graphic

Two graphic families exist here because they are aimed at different riders. Quest references expedition and rally styling; Primal is a contemporary sport-adventure drawing applied to the same shell. Neither is better; they suit different motorcycles. In this colourway the three values are far enough apart to stay legible at distance, which on a helmet ridden in groups is more useful than it sounds. 🔵 The dark blue ground hides trail dust considerably better than the pale Quest versions, and red pigment fades faster than most under sustained UV.

Polyfusion, two shells and four approvals

Beneath the Polyfusion shell sits an EPS liner with internal air channels — the same structure that routes cool air around the head and draws hot air out through the rear exhausts.

🔵 A crushed EPS liner does not recover. After a real impact the helmet is finished, whatever it looks like from outside.

The visor, the wide eye port and the second shield

Look after the visor and it will outlast the padding. Never wipe a dry visor — trail dust is far more abrasive than road film, and dragging it across the surface leaves permanent fine scratches that flare against oncoming headlights.

🔵 Wet it first, every time. A second visor is supplied, which makes a scratched one an inconvenience rather than a problem.

The sun visor and its glove-friendly button

The shield drops far enough to cover the working field of view and retracts fully, so it is not sitting in your upper vision when raised. On a helmet with an exceptionally wide eye port, that full retraction matters more than usual.

🔵 It blocks 99 % of UV; the external button is designed for gloved operation.

Two intakes, four exhausts — and a zero-degree measurement

A pale shell does more for interior temperature at low speed than any vent setting, because at 20 km/h there is no airflow to work with. If you ride in genuine heat, the white and sand versions in this range run measurably cooler than the blacks.

🔵 At road speed the vents take over, and the measured result there was a zero-degree delta.

How loud it actually is

Neck tubes and collars do more for perceived noise than most riders expect, because a surprising proportion of it enters from underneath the chin bar rather than around the visor. The wind deflector supplied with this helmet works on the same path.

🔵 Fit it. The measured 102 dB figure is with the helmet in standard configuration.

Interior, retention and fit

Wash the interior more often than a road helmet's. An adventure liner takes dust and sweat rather than sweat alone, and one washed a few times a season lasts appreciably longer than one that never is.

🔵 All of it comes out by hand: cheek pads, crown pad and chin-strap covers.

Around 1.8 kilograms, and the rest of the honest list

🔵 Compare this against a composite adventure helmet honestly. A fibreglass or carbon shell of equal strength would be considerably lighter and cost two to three times as much. That is the entire argument, and it is legitimate in both directions.

The Y.TRAVL weighs 1805 g measured in size M, against a 1750 g ±50 claim.

The side camera mount is removable, which on a helmet with a streamlined profile matters — you are not carrying an aerodynamic disturbance on every ride just because you filmed one.
