DescriptionThe whole story▼
Zero Pro Black Matt is the most understated way to own the new Nexx X.R5R. The shell is left as bare carbon under a matt finish, the visor and the spoiler fins on the photo are smoked, and the large ZERO lettering along the side is printed in a grey only slightly lighter than the weave, so it appears and disappears as the light moves. What carries this helmet is not the colour but the number on the scale: roughly 1,325 grams in the medium shell, a little under the X.R3R carbon that sits next to it in our range. The X.R5R reached dealers at the end of October 2026, is homologated to ECE 22.06 and is built for circuit days and committed road riding.
About the Zero Pro Black Matt finish
Matt black carbon looks technical rather than decorated. Up close you see the twill of the fibre as a fine diagonal pattern; from a few metres the helmet reads as a single charcoal form with a white Nexx logo and the faint ZERO graphic. Nothing glossy breaks it up, which is exactly the appeal. The flip side is that a matt clear coat cannot be polished: rubbing at a mark with a polish or wax leaves a shiny patch that stays. Clean it with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft microfibre cloth, and let insects soak before you wipe. Light scuffs from gloves tend to disappear into the texture, while a deep gouge exposes the fibres and remains visible. Dark shells also warm up faster in direct sun than white ones.
Weight as neck load over a full day
Around 1,325 grams with a tolerance of 50 grams is the figure Nexx gives for the M shell. Helmet mass matters less while you sit upright on a straight than in the places a racing helmet actually works: tucked behind the screen at the end of a long straight, turning your head into a corner, braking hard while your neck holds the helmet against deceleration. Each of those moments multiplies the load, and after twenty laps or a mountain pass the difference between a heavy and a light helmet shows up as fatigue in the trapezius. Compared with the X.R3R carbon at about 1,350 grams the gain is small on paper; compared with the X-Matrix 2 version of this same X.R5R at about 1,475 grams it is noticeable. Larger shells weigh slightly more and the smallest shell slightly less; Nexx does not publish separate figures.
Four shells instead of three
Nexx moulds the X.R5R in four outer shells: one for XXS to S, one for M, one for L and one for XL to XXL. The two most common sizes, M and L, therefore each get their own shell rather than sharing one. That keeps the helmet compact on the head, avoids a thick layer of foam filling the gap between skull and shell, and helps the weight figure above stay low across the range. We stock XS to XXL; the XXS size that Nexx makes is not part of our range.
Where the X.R5R sits in the Nexx racing line
| Model | Shell | Weight | Shell sizes | Vents in/out | Pinlock in box |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| X.R5R Carbon (this helmet) | X-PRO Carbon | approx. 1,325 g | 4 | 8 / 5 | 200 XLT MaxVision |
| X.R5R X-Matrix 2 | Multi-composite | approx. 1,475 g | 4 | 8 / 5 | 120 XLT MaxVision |
| X.R3R Carbon | X-PRO Carbon | approx. 1,350 g | 3 | 6 / 4 | yes |
| X.R3R Speedcore | X-Matrix 2 | approx. 1,650 g | 3 | 5 / 4 | 120 XLT MaxVision |
The carbon X.R5R is also the version that comes with a racing bag; the X-Matrix 2 version does not. Visors, Pinlock lenses and spoiler parts from the X.R3R are not listed as compatible with the X.R5R, which uses a smaller visor mechanism and a slide-in spoiler extension.
Airflow in brief
Eight intakes feed the helmet and five exhausts draw warm air out at the back. The top and chin vents can be closed, the cheek pads carry their own air channels and an Air Cumbs chamber sits between liner and shell to keep air moving. A removable wind deflector is supplied for colder days.
Visor, lock and the tint question
The Recoil visor clicks off without tools and the X-Race lock holds it shut against the pressure at speed. Three intermediate positions let you crack it open in stop-and-go traffic or a pit lane. The lens is prepared for tear-off strips and a Pinlock 200 XLT MaxVision anti-fog insert is included. Nexx lists a second visor in the box but does not name its tint, and the product photo of Black Matt shows a dark smoked lens. Treat the photo as styling, not as a packing list: if a specific tint matters to you, ask us before ordering and we will check a box. Any dark lens is for daylight only.
What ECE 22.06 means for this shell
ECE 22.06 has been the only standard under which new helmets may be sold in the EU since January 2024. Compared with its predecessor it tests the shell at up to eighteen impact points instead of five, at more than one speed, adds oblique impacts against an abrasive anvil to look at rotational load on the brain, and checks the visor for penetration. Accessories offered by the manufacturer are tested fitted to the helmet. The X.R5R carbon carries that approval.
The extras in the carton
Besides the helmet you get a slide-in spoiler extensor that lengthens the rear edge by up to 20 mm, a mount that holds an action camera under the chin, a wind deflector for cold mornings and a racing bag. The bag is worth using every time: a matt carbon shell that rides loose in a car boot collects the very marks this finish is meant to avoid.
Who it suits
Riders who spend several track days a season, sport-bike owners who ride hard on the road and anyone who wants a low-mass carbon helmet without a loud graphic. The Black Matt is the colourway that matches any leathers and any bike.
Limits worth knowing before you order
There is no internal sun visor, so on bright days you rely on a tinted lens or sunglasses, and those must be removed at dusk. The X.R5R is not FIM-homologated; if your championship requires FIM approval, this is not the helmet for it. A tear-off set is not in the box, only the visor preparation. No SHARP rating or independent test exists yet because the model is brand new, and we do not quote a noise figure that nobody has measured. Spare visors and pads for the X.R5R are not yet in the Nexx parts catalogue.
