DescriptionThe whole story▼
Matt black takes the shine out and leaves the shape. On a jet that gets handled at every stop — on, off, carried, set down — a flat finish is the practical choice rather than the stylistic one.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
Riders choose a demi-jet for reasons that are entirely practical in a city: a wide field of view, air on your face at every stop, glasses that go on and off without a fight, and a helmet you will put on for a five-minute errand.
🔵 What you give up is chin and jaw protection. There is no chin bar, and the open-face category under ECE 22.06 does not require one.
About the matt black finish
An open-face helmet is handled far more than a full-face: put on and taken off several times a journey rather than once, carried by the edge, set down on café tables and pillion seats. That handling is exactly what a flat finish absorbs best — there is no gloss layer for a scuff to catch in, so the marks a city helmet accumulates simply do not read. 🔵 The counterweight is conspicuity, and this is the least visible version in the range on a helmet used where being seen matters most. Matt also holds dry dust more readily than gloss, and it is washed rather than polished.
HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT
What a thermoplastic shell means in practice: it is injection-moulded rather than laid up by hand, which makes it cheaper to produce and heavier than a composite of equal strength. It also makes it very consistent, because the process is machine-controlled.
🔵 On a demi-jet the weight penalty matters less than on a full-face — there is simply less helmet.
MT-ESP — a full-coverage sun visor on a jet
Sunset on a westbound commute is the condition that decides whether a sun visor was worth having, and it is precisely the condition a fixed tinted visor handles worst — half an hour later it is dark and you cannot see through it.
🔵 A drop-down shield retracts in a second and costs you nothing when it is up. The Cosmo SV's is full-coverage under the MT-ESP programme.
The MT-V-37 visor and the patented MT-QVSS
An extended visor on a demi-jet does something a standard one cannot: it covers more of the face against rain and wind at speed, which is the main practical weakness of the format.
🔵 The MT-V-37 is MT's answer, and it swaps out in seconds through MT-QVSS without a single tool.
Active ventilation and the removable rear deflector
Comparing a jet's ventilation with a full-face's is close to meaningless, because the largest air intake on an open-face is the face opening itself. What the vents manage is the crown — the part still covered.
🔵 The Cosmo SV's system is front intakes plus a rear exhaust, with a removable deflector to tune the balance.
The MT-Micrometric+ closure
The closure is one of the places an inexpensive helmet most often disappoints, because a ratchet with shallow teeth feels loose and works loose. A guaranteed two-tooth minimum engagement is MT's answer to that.
🔵 It is still worth checking the strap length every few months; a ratchet's set position drifts with use in a way a double-D ring's does not.
Interior, fit and intercom preparation
Comfort on an open-face is decided at the edge rather than in the padding. The rim runs across your cheekbones and around your jaw, in full view and in constant contact — a hard or badly finished one is unbearable within twenty minutes.
🔵 The Cosmo SV's interior is fully removable, so the parts that touch your face can be washed rather than merely tolerated.
An intercom on a city helmet earns its keep in traffic rather than on the open road: navigation prompts without looking at a screen, and a call answered without stopping.
🔵 The Cosmo SV has a UCS MT-Rider Sync pre-installation. No system is supplied — the provision is the feature.
The weight figure, and the rest of the honest list
An open-face is loud at speed and there is no engineering fix for it — turbulence reaches your ears directly. Below about 60 km/h that barely matters; on a fast road it does.
🔵 The removable rear deflector is the one control you have over it. Fitted, it smooths the wake; removed, it opens the airflow.
Where it sits in MT's range
Within this model the price ladder is entirely paint. The Pure solids at 106 € and the graphic versions at 115 € share the same shell, the same visor system, the same sun shield and the same closure.
🔵 The cheapest Cosmo SV protects exactly as well as the most expensive.
When something wears out
Helmets are consumables with a long life rather than permanent objects. MT, like every manufacturer, recommends replacement after around five years of use regardless of condition — and immediately after any real impact, because the EPS crushes once and does not recover.
Between those points, everything you touch on this helmet is replaceable.
