DescriptionThe whole story▼
Icarus is the second graphic family and takes a more flowing approach than Layout's blocked areas. In red and dark blue it is the most classically coloured version in the range.
What an open-face helmet does and does not do
🔵 One sentence that should not be buried: the chin and jaw region takes a substantial share of impacts in real motorcycle crashes, and this helmet has nothing over it.
That is not a criticism of the Cosmo SV, which is an unusually well-equipped example of what it is. It is the fact that should decide whether an open-face suits your riding.
About the Icarus A5 graphic
Red and dark blue is a pairing that predates every current fashion in helmet design, which is exactly why it does not date. The two sit far apart in value, so the graphic stays legible on a curved shell where two similar tones would blur into one — and red is a high-saturation colour that holds up well against grey tarmac. On a demi-jet used in traffic, that legibility is a functional argument rather than a styling one. 🔵 Red pigment fades faster than most under sustained ultraviolet, and a printed graphic cannot be touched in after a stone strike the way a solid colour can.
HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT
The structure is conventional and appropriate: an injection-moulded HIRP shell to spread the load and resist penetration, over a polystyrene liner that absorbs energy by permanently crushing.
🔵 A crushed liner does not recover. After a real impact the helmet is finished, whatever it looks like from outside.
MT-ESP — a full-coverage sun visor on a jet
🔵 A tinted visor is not road-legal at night or in poor visibility in most European countries, and the rules differ between them. A retractable internal shield sidesteps the question entirely — it is up when the light goes.
The main MT-V-37 visor stays clear behind it.
The MT-V-37 visor and the patented MT-QVSS
🔵 Fogging on an open-face is a different problem from fogging on a full-face. Your breath escapes downwards rather than being trapped behind a chin bar, so the visor stays clear in conditions that would mist a full-face — which is fortunate, because no Pinlock lens is available.
In genuinely cold, wet, stop-start conditions, cracking the visor open is the practical answer.
Active ventilation and the removable rear deflector
What ventilation actually manages is humidity rather than temperature. Sweat that cannot evaporate stays in the padding, and a saturated liner is what makes a helmet uncomfortable long before heat does.
🔵 The active system here is aimed at exactly that, on the part of your head that is still covered.
The MT-Micrometric+ closure
🔵 A loose strap is the most common way a helmet fails to do its job, and on an open-face it matters more than usual — there are no full cheek pads gripping the jaw to help hold the helmet in place.
The MT-Micrometric+ closure adjusts finely enough to get it right. Check it periodically.
Interior, fit and intercom preparation
Washing the interior is the single most effective maintenance you can do, and on a helmet worn daily in a city it is worth doing more often than most riders bother to.
🔵 All of it comes out on the Cosmo SV, and it dries faster than a full-face lining because there is less of it.
🔵 „Pre-installation" means the mounting, routing and speaker positions are built in rather than improvised. On an open-face that is more valuable than usual, because there is less shell to hide a badly fitted unit behind.
The system is MT's own UCS Rider Sync, and it is a separate purchase.
The weight figure, and the rest of the honest list
🔵 Weight figures on inexpensive helmets are quoted inconsistently across the industry, and this model is a clear example: MT says 1.5 kg, retail listings suggest around 1350 g, and nobody has independently weighed one.
Plan around MT's number. If the helmet turns out lighter, that is a bonus rather than a claim we made.
Where it sits in MT's range
🔵 If an independent safety rating is part of your decision, note that only MT's Track SV currently carries one — four SHARP stars. No open-face helmet from any brand has one, because SHARP does not test them.
Every current MT holds ECE 22.06; this one adds DOT.
When something wears out
Genuine parts matter more on a helmet than on most things, because the visor and the retention system are part of what was certified to ECE 22.06 and DOT. A pattern visor with different optical properties is not the helmet that was approved.
Everything we stock for the Cosmo SV is MT's own.
