DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Spartan RS Blank strips the line back to the shell itself: matte black, no graphic, no decor name to justify on a hang tag. It is the least expensive way into this helmet family, and the honest way to describe it is by what is missing rather than what is added — nothing here is trying to look fast or tell a story, it is simply the fibre shell, the VZ300 visor and Shark's Spartan RS silhouette on their own. For riders who find graphic helmets busy on a daily commute, or want a helmet that will not clash with any specific bike colour, this is built for exactly that brief. On a bike with its own strong colour scheme — a bright fairing, a coloured frame, a liveried tank — a graphic-free helmet like this one is often the easier pairing, letting the bike's own paint do the talking instead of competing with a second pattern on the rider's head.
The matte finish
A single matte black coat, applied evenly with no gloss clear-coat layer over it, so light scatters across the shell rather than reflecting a sharp highlight. Matte black also shows fine scuffs and fingerprints more readily than gloss black does, a small trade worth knowing before the first long trip through variable weather.
About the Blank decor
Blank is Shark's own naming convention for a graphic-free colourway, used the same way across several other 2027 lines in this range (the D-Skwal 3, for one, carries its own Blank Black decor at a different price point). It is not a placeholder awaiting a future graphic — it is a permanent, standing option in the Spartan RS catalogue, priced below every graphic decor precisely because there is no print run or design licensing behind it.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
The Blank Mat carries ECE 22.06, the EU's mandatory standard for newly homologated helmets since January 2024. Where the older 22.05 struck a shell five times at one speed, 22.06 strikes eighteen points across several speeds, adds an oblique-impact test against a rough anvil that twists the shell instead of only compressing it, and scores rotational energy for the first time through a Brain Injury Criterion. Shark tests the whole assembly — shell, visor, Pinlock — as one unit, and this helmet was the brand's own first model built to that protocol.
Fibre, not carbon: what actually changes
The Blank Mat's shell is a multiaxial composite fibre — cross-laid glass-fibre layers, not a carbon weave — and it sits below the Spartan RS Carbon in Shark's own lineup. The honest comparison is by what stays identical rather than what differs: same ECE 22.06 certificate, same Double-D buckle, same multi-density EPS, same VZ300 visor. Carbon's advantage over this shell is a lighter first-size weight figure and a different surface texture, not a separate safety tier.
Weight as neck load, not a spec-sheet line
Shark states 1500 g for the Blank Mat at the first, smallest shell size. That weight sits entirely on the neck for as long as the helmet is worn, loaded dynamically through every acceleration, brake and head movement rather than carried passively — which is why testers running this exact helmet over real mileage reported no fatigue from it despite it not being among the lightest fibre lids on the market.
Ventilation on the Blank
Two intakes — one low in the chin bar aimed at the visor, one on the forehead — feed a permanently open exhaust built into the rear spoiler. The sliders are chunky enough to work with winter gloves, though they move without detent clicks, so mid-positions are set by eye rather than by feel. Airflow is adequate to keep the visor clear in everyday riding, described by reviewers as sufficient rather than class-leading.
The visor system on the Blank
A drop-down internal sun visor is standard, rated by independent testers as covering nearly the whole face with its own click-stop positions. The outer visor belongs to Shark's VZ300 family: optical class 1, 2.8 mm to 2.2 mm thickness, four anchor points, central grip-and-lock, anti-scratch coating and a clear Pinlock 120 insert fitted from the factory rather than sold separately.
Visor swaps and everyday handling
The outer visor on the Blank Mat comes off without tools via the four-point locking mechanism described above, so switching between the clear factory visor and an aftermarket tint takes a couple of minutes at a kitchen table rather than a trip to a dealer. The anti-scratch coating is standard, not an upgrade option, across every Spartan RS decor.
Intercom and comms compatibility
The Blank Mat's shell has a recessed cavity at the cheek pad built for Shark's own Sharktooth intercom and for SENA For SHARK units, so a comms unit sits flush rather than bolted awkwardly to the outside. No intercom is included in the box; this is a mounting compatibility, not a bundled accessory.
Fit and sizing, Blank
Six sizes, XS to XXL, are built across two shell sizes rather than three — a real limitation reviewers flag, since three shells is what they treat as the premium benchmark. In return, the internal shape is described as noticeably round, a good match for riders who find Shoei or Arai too narrow through the temples, with cheek pads that can be swapped for a closer or looser fit independently of shell size.
Wind noise on the Blank, honestly
No decibel figure is published for this helmet, and none is invented here. One independent reviewer describes the noise level as appropriate road noise without excessive wind drone at legal speeds, suitable for both faired and naked bikes. A separate review flags, without a number, that the Spartan RS lacks the tight neck roll of its predecessor, the Spartan GT, and wonders aloud whether that lets in more wind at motorway speed.
Spare parts, Blank
Shark runs a dedicated visor collection for the whole Spartan RS family, so a scratched or fogged visor on this Blank Mat decor is a replacement part, not a reason to retire the helmet. The VZ300 visor is shared with the Spartan RS Carbon and the Spartan GT Pro Carbon, which keeps stock and tint options broader than a helmet with its own unique visor would have.
Where this sits in Shark's own range
This decor sits at the entry point of the Spartan RS fibre range, 359.99 EUR before any storewide discount. Rather than reach for a competitor comparison, here is where it lands against Shark's own current 2027 lineup, same currency, same brand:
| Line | UVP range | Shell |
|---|---|---|
| Skwal i3 | 319.99 - 399.99 EUR | Thermoplastic, LED brake light |
| OXO | 349.99 - 459.99 EUR | Thermoplastic modular |
| Spartan RS (this decor: 359.99 EUR) | 359.99 - 389.99 EUR | Multiaxial composite fibre |
| Spartan RS Carbon | 429.99 - 529.99 EUR | Carbon, same VZ300 visor family |
| Spartan GT Pro Carbon | 549.99 - 629.99 EUR | Carbon, also shares the VZ300 visor |
Limitations, honestly
This is the base decor with no graphic and no replica story, which some riders will read as a limitation if visual distinction from other Spartan RS owners is the goal. The two-shell sizing and the lack of a manufacturer decibel figure for wind noise apply here exactly as they do across the rest of the line — being the plainest colour option changes none of the underlying mechanical facts.
