DescriptionThe whole story▼
Premium Grey is the most balanced finish in the whole Y.100R range: visible enough to matter in traffic, dark enough to stay clean, and neutral enough not to date. If you cannot decide, this is usually the right answer.
The SHARP rating this helmet does not have
🔵 Before you compare this against a rated helmet, know what you are comparing. The Y.100R carries ECE 22-06, DOT, CCC and NBR approvals and has been assessed in one scored independent road test — but no laboratory star rating exists for it.
SHARP's five-star „Nexx Y100" is a different model, listed in sizes XS–XL.
About the Nippon Premium Grey finish
Value rather than colour decides both how dirty a helmet looks and how easily it is seen, and a mid grey sits at the useful point on that scale for both. Road film, dust and dried water marks all show least here; and a driver's eye resolves a mid-value object against dark tarmac appreciably faster than a dark one. Neither property is dramatic on its own, and together they make this the version that asks the least of you over several years of daily use. 🔵 It is also the finish that shows the Nippon graphic most clearly, because the design has enough contrast against grey without fighting a bright ground.
Polyfusion, two shells and dual-EPS
What you are buying structurally: a wind-tunnel-shaped Polyfusion thermoplastic shell in two outer sizes, a dual-EPS liner, and four separate market homologations.
🔵 What you are not buying is a composite shell. That is the difference between this helmet and Nexx's X-range, and it is most of the price difference too.
X-SWIFT — a visor change in under eight seconds
X-SWIFT removes the base-plate screws entirely, which also removes the part most likely to work loose or be over-tightened. There is nothing to lose in a car park and nothing to strip.
Visor changes take under eight seconds; a second clear visor and a Pinlock 70 MaxVision lens are supplied.
The sun visor and its glove-friendly button
🔵 Keep the sun shield clean as carefully as the outer visor. It is the surface closest to your eyes, it is easy to forget, and a fingerprint on it is far more visible than one on the outer visor.
It filters 99 % of UV and drops on an external button.
Double-blade spoiler and how quiet it measures
🔵 One thing worth checking on any helmet: whether air whistles with the visor fully closed. On the Y.100R the X-SWIFT mechanism seats the visor the same way every time, so a whistle usually means a dirty seal rather than a fitting error.
Measured overall noise was around 100 dB, scored 4 out of 5.
Two intakes, and a zero-degree measurement
Airflow only happens if there is somewhere for the air to go, and a matched two-in, two-out arrangement keeps the path simple — fewer openings, but each one working rather than merely present.
🔵 The measured result was no temperature build-up inside the shell at all, scored 4 out of 5.
Interior, retention and fit
A micrometric ratchet with a fine adjustment is the practical choice for a helmet worn daily, and it is one of the places where this helmet does not economise — the alternative at this price is usually a simple two-position buckle.
🔵 Check the adjustment every few months; it should be snug enough that the helmet cannot be rolled forward off your head.
Around 1.6 kilograms, and the rest of the honest list
🔵 If weight is your priority, this is the wrong helmet and a composite shell is the right one. If value per euro is your priority, this is among the strongest cases in the category — four approvals, two visors, a sun visor and measured 4/5 results for both noise and ventilation.
Weight: around 1.6 kg, independently measured.
Where it sits in Nexx's range
🔵 Nexx builds the Y-range as its accessible line and the X-range as its premium one, and the gap between them is real: composite shells, three or four shell sizes, Anti-Vibration EPS and F.R.S. cheek pads all belong to the X-range.
What the Y.100R keeps is the visor system, the sun visor, the comms provision and all four market approvals.
Comms, camera and spare parts
The wind deflector supplied with this helmet closes the gap under the chin bar. It does more for noise than any other single thing you can fit, because most perceived helmet noise enters from below rather than around the visor.
🔵 It is in the box along with the nose guard, the second visor and the Pinlock 70 MaxVision lens.

“Built around its airflow: a big top intake, a dual EPS chamber that actually routes the air, and owners who report it staying bearable above 30 degrees. The weight is the trade, and 1,575 g is on the heavy side of this list.”
