DescriptionThe whole story▼
Spectrum in black, white and red is the most conventional graphic in this range and the one that will date the slowest. There is a reason this palette has outlasted sixty years of changing helmet fashion.
Four stars from SHARP — and this is the helmet they tested
🟢 Tested July 2024 against ECE 22.06 — a current result on the current standard, not a legacy score carried over from an earlier generation.
🔵 Where a rating belongs to a predecessor or a different shell we say so and leave it out. Here it belongs to this helmet.
A flip-up with P/J dual homologation
🔵 Check for P/J on any modular helmet you consider. It appears on the approval label on the chin strap, and a helmet marked P alone is homologated closed only.
🟢 The Advant X is marked P/J: both positions tested, both approved.
HPFC composite, multi-density EPS — and only two shell sizes
🔵 The oblique impact test added in 22.06 is the most consequential change to European helmet approval in three decades — rotation is behind a large share of serious head injuries, and 22.05 had no equivalent test at all.
The Advant X is homologated to the current standard and was SHARP-tested against it.
About the Spectrum black, white and red graphic
It was never really a styling choice. White carries the value, red supplies the contrast, black gives both something to sit against, and the arrangement was arrived at by people who needed to tell one rider from another at speed and at distance. Every one of those properties transfers directly to a driver resolving you at a junction — which matters more on a touring helmet than on a track one, because a touring helmet spends its life among traffic rather than among other bikes. 🔵 One thing worth knowing before choosing anything red: of all the pigments used on helmets, red is the most vulnerable to ultraviolet, because the organic pigments that give it saturation break down faster than the inorganic ones behind white, grey and black. Modern clear coats slow this considerably. Store the helmet out of prolonged direct sun rather than on a windowsill, and it will hold its colour. Compared with the Nova white finish at the same price, this is the darker and more conventional of the two tricolours: Nova is white-dominant and therefore measurably easier to see, while Spectrum reads as a dark helmet with white and red on it. Both are the same helmet with the same four stars. If a good share of your riding ends after sunset, the Nova is the better tool.
Twin Visor, Pinlock 120 and a tinted spare
🟢 The most useful item in this box is the one with the least glamour. A Pinlock 120 insert transforms cold-weather riding, and it is fitted rather than sold as an upgrade.
The tinted visor is the headline inclusion; the Pinlock is the one you will use every winter.
Chin and crown intakes, channelled EPS
🔵 Two things on this page are assessments rather than measurements, and both are flagged: ventilation and fit. Both are derived from published construction.
Wind noise is left blank entirely, because there is nothing to derive it from.
Metal buckle and the Emergency Release System
🟢 The chin-bar lock is central and operates with one gloved hand. It is the mechanism a modular helmet lives or dies by, and on this one it is backed by a P/J approval covering both positions.
🔵 Operate it deliberately rather than snatching it — the hinge is the one part of a flip-up that wears.
Lining, comfort — and the X-Static this version does not have
The Advant X is prepared for a Bluetooth intercom — recesses and routing, without a supplied system. Check speaker depth rather than diameter before buying one.
🔵 The removable lining makes cable routing straightforward on what is otherwise a complicated shell.
Where it sits in LS2's range
🔵 If you want a full-face rather than a modular, LS2's carbon FF807 Dragon is 150 g lighter, also holds 4 SHARP stars, and also ships with a Pinlock and a spare tinted visor.
🟢 What it cannot do is open at a fuel stop, which is the entire reason to buy this one.
Care and replacement parts
🔵 Store it somewhere dark, dry and cool. UV degrades lacquer and graphics, heat degrades EPS, and a helmet left on a rear parcel shelf through one summer ages several years.
A cloth bag is better than a sealed plastic one, which traps moisture against the lining.
In the box
- LS2 FF901 Advant X helmet — Spectrum, Black, white and red (HPFC composite shell)
- Clear main visor, fitted, with tool-free quick release
- Pinlock® 120 MaxVision™ XLT anti-fog insert

Size guide
🔵 Fit matters more than any specification on this page, including the SHARP result. The liner protects you where it is in contact with your head, and a loose helmet moves before it begins working.
Measure, try, and keep it on for ten minutes.
