Sharpen in TC-10 — the only colourway in the Neotec 3 range that combines blue and red. Two saturated colours on one shell is a deliberate choice rather than a default, and it is the most conventionally sporting scheme Shoei offers on this touring helmet.

Five stars from SHARP — and the number behind them

Two things on this helmet's label work together and are usually discussed separately. The five-star SHARP rating tells you how the shell performed against everything else SHARP has tested. The P/J homologation tells you the helmet was certified in both configurations, open and closed.

A modular that is strong when shut but uncertified when open is only half solved. This one is neither.

About the Sharpen TC-10 colourway

Blue and red together is one of the oldest combinations in motorcycling and one of the hardest to get right, because the two sit almost opposite each other in the spectrum and will fight if given equal area. The way it is resolved on any well-drawn helmet is proportion: one colour takes the mass, the other appears in smaller quantities where it draws the eye. Worth knowing about the two pigments involved, since they age differently. Blue is among the most lightfast colours available and will hold for the life of the helmet. Red is the least — it absorbs the high-energy end of sunlight, which is what degrades pigment — so on a two-colour helmet like this one it is the red that will shift first if the helmet lives in the sun. Bag storage is the whole answer.

P and J, and what ECE 22.06 actually tests

The plaque riveted to the chin strap is the physical evidence of a test regime that changed substantially in 2021: eighteen impact sites instead of five, multiple speeds, and an oblique abrasive-anvil test that measures how far the head rotates.

Next to it, P/J — the dual homologation that makes the open configuration on this helmet a certified state rather than a grey area.

AIM, three shells, and the steel that holds the chin bar

Six sizes on three shells puts the Neotec 3 at the well-tooled end of the market. Every additional shell size needs its own moulds, its own EPS tooling and its own homologation testing — which on a modular helmet also means a second and third set of chin-bar pivot geometry. That cost is invisible on a photograph and entirely visible on the scales and in the mirror.

Shell material throughout is AIM fibreglass laminate.

CNS-3C and QSV-2 — and the Neotec II trap

Worth planning your screens as a pair rather than one at a time. A clear CNS-3C for winter and night riding, something tinted or mirrored for summer, swapped in under a minute by the quick-change mechanism. The one thing that does not move between them is the Pinlock lens, which is pinned to a single screen.

Quiet by design, and what that costs in airflow

Aerodynamic development on a helmet is largely invisible: smooth surfaces, transitions without steps, edges that do not shed vortices into the ear region. None of it photographs, all of it is expensive to develop, and it is the main reason a helmet like this costs what it does.

🔵 The visible cost is ventilation. Shoei traded airflow for quiet and has not pretended otherwise.

Noise Isolator, glasses, and talking to the helmet

Removable ear pads are a genuine choice rather than a fitted part. Leave them in and the helmet is quieter; take them out and it is cooler and you hear more of the road and of an intercom. Neither is wrong, and being able to change your mind seasonally is the point.

The rest of the interior — centre pad, cheek pads, strap cover — is removable and washable as standard.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

The graphic colourways cost a hundred euros more than the solids, and it is fair to say what that buys: multi-stage masking and printing on a compound-curved surface, which is genuinely difficult and genuinely slow. It buys nothing structural. If budget is the constraint, a solid Neotec 3 is exactly the same helmet.

1750 grams, and the rest of the honest list

The intermediate-oval shape is the single thing most likely to make this helmet wrong for you, and no rating or specification can substitute for trying it. Riders with markedly long or markedly round heads will find pressure points that pad thickness cannot fully solve.

Beyond fit: 1750 g on the scales, and ventilation deliberately sized for acoustics rather than for heat.

When something wears out

The optional yellow QSV-2 is worth knowing about even if you never buy one. A yellow shade does not darken the view; it raises contrast in flat light — dusk, fog, heavy overcast — which is exactly when a tinted shade is useless and seeing the road surface is hardest. It fits the same mechanism, tool-free.

The standard tinted QSV-2 is also available separately if yours is damaged.
