DescriptionThe whole story▼
Please note: sale to France is prohibited.
Sharpen in TC-11 is the green colourway, and green is the rarest base colour on any helmet shelf. That scarcity is the point: on a motorcycle park full of black, grey and white lids, it is the one people walk over to look at.
Five stars from SHARP — and the number behind them
The uncomfortable truth about premium helmets is that price and measured protection do not track each other reliably — there are inexpensive five-star helmets and expensive three-star helmets. So a rating on an expensive helmet is worth more scrutiny, not less.
The Neotec 3 stands up to it: five stars out of five from SHARP in February 2024, tested to the current ECE 22.06 standard.
About the Sharpen TC-11 colourway
There is a reason so few helmets are green, and it is commercial rather than technical. Green sells more slowly than black in every market, so manufacturers make fewer of them — which in turn means the ones that exist are seen less often and stand out more. For a rider that is a straightforward advantage, and it comes with a genuine safety footnote. Human colour vision is most sensitive in the green part of the spectrum, around 555 nanometres in daylight: the eye resolves green faster and at lower light levels than red or blue of equal brightness. That is why fire escape signage and high-visibility workwear both trend green, and it applies to a helmet moving through a driver's peripheral vision as well. Green is also a stable pigment that will not shift the way a red will.
P and J, and what ECE 22.06 actually tests
One consequence of P/J worth connecting to the SHARP result above. If a chin bar releases under impact, a P-only modular is outside its certified configuration at the worst possible moment. A P/J helmet is not — the open state was tested and approved on its own terms.
On the Neotec 3 that combination is unusually strong: dual approval, and a bar that stayed locked in 93 % of SHARP's impacts.
AIM, three shells, and the steel that holds the chin bar
Composite shells vary from unit to unit in a way injection-moulded ones do not — laid material is never quite identical twice — which is why manufacturers building them invest heavily in process control. Shoei builds its shells in-house rather than buying them in, and AIM is a proprietary laminate rather than a bought-in specification.
Three shell sizes cover XS to XXL, over a multi-density EPS core.
CNS-3C and QSV-2 — and the Neotec II trap
The gap-width detent is the position most riders end up using most. It admits enough air to clear a misting screen and to make traffic bearable in summer, without opening the visor far enough to catch wind or let rain in — and it holds there rather than creeping shut at speed.
Behind it, the QSV-2 sun visor deploys steplessly, and a Pinlock EVO DKS301 lens comes in the box.
Quiet by design, and what that costs in airflow
A note for riders coming from a full-face. Modular helmets are almost always the louder format — more joints, more gaps, a heavier structure to seal — so a flip-up that is quieter than most full-face helmets is genuinely unusual. That is the specific claim testers keep making about this one.
🔵 And the specific limitation they keep noting alongside it: ventilation that is sufficient rather than generous.
Noise Isolator, glasses, and talking to the helmet
If a helmet is otherwise the right size but moves when you shake your head, that is almost always a cheek pad problem rather than a size problem. Thicker pads hold the jaw more firmly, which is what stops the shell rotating under braking and what closes the path noise takes from below.
Cheek and centre pads are available in several thicknesses, and an insertable pad adjusts the vertical fit.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
A modular helmet has historically been the compromise choice — heavier than a full-face, noisier, and not quite as strong. The reason the Neotec 3 is interesting is that it undermines two of those three: five SHARP stars, and acoustics that testers compare favourably with full-face helmets.
The weight penalty remains, and the table below shows what the alternatives cost.
| Model | Type |
|---|---|
| J.O2 | Jet |
| Glamster06 | Full-face (retro) |
| J-Cruise 3 | Jet |
| GT-Air3 | Full-face (sport-touring) |
| Neotec 3 | Flip-up (P/J) |
| X-SPR PRO | Full-face (racing) |
1750 grams, and the rest of the honest list
A modular helmet carries more hardware than a full-face and there is no way around what that weighs. Hinge, latch, chin-bar reinforcement, the sun visor and its mechanism, the COMLINK recesses — each of them is a feature you are buying and a few grams you are carrying. The total is 1750 g.
The other honest note is airflow: this shell was tuned quiet first, and ventilation is adequate rather than abundant.
When something wears out
Everything on this helmet that touches you or that you look through is a serviceable part: centre pad, cheek pads with Noise Isolator, ear pads, chin strap cover, CNS-3C visor, QSV-2 sun visor and the Pinlock EVO lens. That list is itself a specification, and it is what makes five-year ownership realistic rather than aspirational.
🔵 Order screens as CNS-3C, never CNS-3.
