Gloss black is the version of the Hornet ADV 06 that reads as a road helmet with a peak rather than as an off-road helmet with a visor — which, if most of your mileage is tarmac, is the more honest description of what this helmet is.

Peak and visor — what an adventure helmet is for

An adventure helmet is the only type that carries a peak and a visor, and the Hornet ADV 06 exists because neither a road helmet nor a motocross helmet covers the riding that adventure bikes actually do — a motorway transfer, then a gravel track, then a motorway home.

🔵 It is a compromise by design. On a closed circuit the visorless VFX-WR 06 is the better tool; on a pure road tour the GT-Air3 is quieter. This one does both adequately rather than either perfectly.

About the gloss black finish

An adventure helmet has more surface to look at than any other type, because the peak, the shell and the visor aperture all present separately. Gloss black unifies them: the peak stops reading as an addition and the whole thing becomes one object. That suits riders whose bike is a large road-biased adventure machine rather than a rally replica. The practical case is the usual one and it cuts both ways. Black absorbs solar load, which matters on a helmet whose ventilation was revised specifically to handle slow, hot going; and dark clear coat against road film is maximum contrast, so it shows every mile until it is washed. Wash it wet, dry it with a clean cloth, and it will still look new when the padding needs replacing. It is also 130 € below any of the graphics.

AIM+, four shells, double-D and EQRS

AIM+ is Shoei's higher shell grade — a six-layer composite of fibreglass, organic and high-performance fibres, the same family used in their competition helmets rather than the AIM used across the road range.

Beneath it, a multi-density EPS core whose elements absorb differently. The chin strap is a double-D ring, and EQRS lets first responders pull the cheek pads out for a controlled removal.

The CNS-2 visor and the Pinlock lens in the box

The CNS-2 visor changes without tools and comes with a Pinlock® EVO anti-fog lens in the box — not as an accessory. On a helmet used in cold, wet and slow going that is the difference between seeing and not seeing.

🔵 Replacements are ordered as Pinlock EVO DKS302, the lens Pinlock lists for the Hornet ADV. It is not the DKS301 used across Shoei's GT-Air and Neotec range.

Ventilation — and why we do not quote a vent count

Ventilation was reworked for this generation, and Shoei's own description centres on the outlets: six of them across the rear and neck, pulling air through rather than merely letting it out.

🔵 We are not going to quote a precise intake and exhaust count, because the published sources contradict each other — two say four in and four out, one says four in and six out, and Shoei's own page counts six outlets. Nobody has independently verified any of them.

Peak, spoiler and lift at road speed

The shell carries an integrated rear spoiler and the peak is perforated, both intended to reduce the lift a peak generates at road speed — the force that pulls at your neck on a motorway and is the main reason peaked helmets are tiring on long transfers.

🔵 That is Shoei's own description of the design intent. No independent road test of this generation exists yet, so treat it as a design claim rather than a measured result.

Four cheek pad thicknesses, removable ear pads, intercom prep

Cheek pads come in four thicknesses — 31, 35, 39 and 43 mm, which is an unusually wide range and the reason this helmet can be brought to fit rather than accepted as it comes.

The ear pads are removable, and the helmet is prepared for intercom installation — take the pads out and there is space for speakers without them pressing against your ears.

What is documented and what is not

🔵 Shoei publishes no weight for this helmet. The only figure in circulation — around 1600 g in size M with all accessories fitted — comes from an article marked as sponsored, so it originates in the press kit rather than from a set of scales.

For scale: Bennetts independently weighed the previous Hornet ADV at 1601 g. Roughly 1.6 kg is the realistic expectation, and we would rather say that than quote a number as if it were measured.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

The Hornet ADV 06 is Shoei's adventure helmet and the bridge between their road and off-road ranges. It uses the AIM+ shell grade of the competition VFX-WR 06 and adds a visor, a Pinlock lens and intercom preparation.

🔵 If your riding is almost entirely tarmac, the GT-Air3 costs the same, is quieter and is independently rated at five SHARP stars. There is no shame in buying the road helmet.

When something wears out

We stock the genuine Shoei parts for this helmet: CNS-2 visors in clear and tinted, Pinlock EVO DKS302 lenses, replacement peaks, cheek pads in all four thicknesses (31, 35, 39 and 43 mm), centre pads, ear pads and chin strap covers.

🔵 The pad range is the point — a helmet that is nearly right can be made right rather than tolerated.
