Matt black on the GT-Air3 does something specific to this shell: it hides the panel lines and the spoiler edges, so a helmet with a lot of aerodynamic sculpting reads as one smooth form. Whether that is an improvement is a matter of taste, and it is worth knowing before you order.

Five stars from SHARP — and which GT-Air earned them

An ECE label is a pass mark; SHARP is a ranking. Every helmet legally sold in Europe has cleared 22.06, and nothing on the label distinguishes the ones that cleared it comfortably. SHARP measures exactly that, the same way for every model, and publishes it.

The GT-Air3's result is five out of five stars, from a June 2024 test — the highest score awarded.

About the matt black finish

Shoei put visible effort into the GT-Air3's shape — pronounced integrated spoiler edges, a slimmer chin area, smoothed transitions between visor and shell — and gloss finishes show all of it as running highlights. Matt absorbs those highlights. What you get instead is a helmet that looks considerably plainer and, in practice, considerably easier to live with: scratches have no gloss layer to catch in and effectively disappear, which matters on a helmet handled daily. The trade-offs are the usual matt ones and worth stating plainly. Baked-on insects need soaking rather than wiping. Dust and dried water spots show earlier than on any other finish. And a matt surface scrubbed hard stays dulled rather than polishing back.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

Rotation is what a real crash usually delivers. A glancing blow that twists the head tears the bridging veins between brain and skull, and it does so at energies a shell survives comfortably. ECE 22.06 measures it for the first time, through an oblique drop onto an abrasive anvil, against the Brain Injury Criterion.

Straight-line impact was always the easier problem; this is the one the current standard added.

AIM, three shells, and the EQRS release

The organic fibre in AIM is what distinguishes it from plain fibreglass. Glass alone is strong and heavy; adding organic fibre raises tensile strength without a proportional weight penalty, which is how a helmet with an integrated sun visor, a communication interface and three shell tools stays around 1700 g rather than considerably more.

Under it: multi-density EPS, assembled from elements with differing absorption characteristics.

CNS-1C and QSV-2 — the two screens

The CNS-1C is available in six tints — clear, mellow smoke, dark smoke, and three Spectra mirrors in silver, blue and rainbow — which makes this one of the better-supported visor systems on the market. All of them block more than 99 % of incoming ultraviolet, mirrored or not.

The tool-free quick-change takes about a minute, and a Pinlock EVO anti-fog lens comes with the helmet.

Air in, air out, and why it is quiet

The removable insect filter in the lower front vent is the kind of detail that only appears on helmets designed by people who tour. Anyone who has cleaned a summer's worth of insects out of a ventilation channel understands immediately why it is there, and it takes seconds to remove and rinse.

Above it, intakes face directly into the airstream and high-placed exhausts extract at the rear.

Interior, glasses and talking to the helmet

Fit here is adjustable in a way most helmets are not. Cheek pads in different thicknesses set how firmly the helmet is held at the jaw — which is what stops it rotating under braking and what closes the path noise takes from below — and centre pads are equally available in several thicknesses.

Everything is removable and washable, and the COMLINK interface sits behind it for the SENA SRL3.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

A hundred and fifty euros separates the J-Cruise 3 from the GT-Air3, and the difference is a chin bar and a full-face shell. Both share the same integrated sun visor concept and the same acoustic attention; the jet gives you air on your face and the full-face gives you the protection an ECE chin-impact test measures.

Which matters more depends entirely on the riding you actually do.

Around 1700 grams, and the rest of the honest list

🔵 The communication system is the one thing riders most often assume is included and is not. The SENA SRL3 Mesh fits the COMLINK interface, uses the pre-routed cabling and the moulded recesses, and is a separate Shoei accessory. The helmet arrives prepared, not equipped.

Beyond that: around 1700 g, and an intermediate-oval shape that is worth trying before committing.

When something wears out

Cheek pads are the first part of the interior to wear out, because they take the most sweat and the most friction going on and off. They are also the cheapest way to restore the fit of a helmet that has loosened — and on this helmet they carry the EQRS release tabs, so a correctly fitted pair matters for more than comfort.
