DescriptionThe whole story▼
Please note: sale to France is prohibited.
Brilliant Yellow is the most visible solid finish Shoei offers on this helmet, and the only one in the GT-Air3 range chosen primarily for being seen rather than for looking a particular way. On a touring helmet that spends its life among traffic, that is a defensible priority.
Five stars from SHARP — and which GT-Air earned them
SHARP records this helmet as composite fibre, six sizes from XS to XXL, with a quick-release retention system — figures that match Shoei's AIM construction and micro-ratchet buckle exactly. That correspondence matters, because a rating only belongs to the helmet you are buying if the tested helmet is the same one.
It is, and the result is five stars out of five.
About the Brilliant Yellow finish
Yellow occupies a specific place in human vision that makes it unusually effective on a moving object. The eye's peak daylight sensitivity sits at around 555 nanometres — in the yellow-green region — which means a yellow helmet is resolved faster and at lower light levels than a red or blue one of equal brightness. That is not a marketing claim; it is why road signage, emergency vehicles and high-visibility workwear converge on the same part of the spectrum. Two practical notes. Bright yellows are among the less lightfast pigments, so a helmet stored in a sunny window will shift before one kept in a bag or a cupboard. And yellow shows road film more than any dark finish — a wet week is visible on it in a way it simply is not on grey.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
The plaque riveted to the chin strap is the physical evidence of a test regime that changed substantially in 2021: eighteen impact sites instead of five, multiple speeds, and an oblique abrasive-anvil test measuring rotational acceleration.
Everything fitted to the helmet goes through it as fitted — visor, sun visor, vent covers — which is why a drop-down shade cannot be retrofitted to a helmet approved without one.
AIM, three shells, and the EQRS release
EQRS — the Emergency Quick Release System — is the feature you hope stays unused. Pull tabs let a first responder withdraw the cheek pads sideways so the helmet lifts off an injured rider without the shell being rotated over the jaw and the neck with it.
Find yours before you need them, and route them clear when you refit the padding after washing. A release system nobody can locate is not a release system.
CNS-1C and QSV-2 — the two screens
A stepless sun visor is a small distinction with a real consequence. Fixed-position shades force a choice between too much tint and not enough at exactly the wrong moment — low sun through trees, or a road alternating between shadow and glare. The QSV-2 moves continuously, operated by a slider that works with winter gloves on.
The outer screen is the CNS-1C, supplied with a Pinlock EVO lens.
Air in, air out, and why it is quiet
Exhaust placement is the half of a ventilation system nobody thinks about and the half that makes the rest work. Air does not flow through a helmet because the front vents are open; it flows because the low-pressure region behind the shell pulls it out. Placing those outlets high, where that pressure differential is strongest, is what gives the flow its pull.
The intakes at the front are aimed directly into the oncoming air.
Interior, glasses and talking to the helmet
Riders who wear glasses report that temple arms slide into place without pressure points, and that is a design decision rather than luck — the cheek pads are channelled for it. Worth testing with your own frames, because arm thickness varies enormously and no helmet accommodates all of them.
Pads and chin strap cover detach fully for washing and are available separately in more than one thickness.
Where it sits in Shoei's range
The GT-Air3 sits in the middle of Shoei's range by price and at the top of it by measured protection — the X-SPR PRO above it is built for a tucked position at racing speed rather than for eight hours on a motorway, and the Glamster06 below is a retro shell with different priorities entirely.
For sport-touring, this is the model the rest of the range is arranged around.

Around 1700 grams, and the rest of the honest list
What this helmet asks of you. It is not light at roughly 1700 g, because a sun visor and its mechanism have to go somewhere. It is not cheap, and there are five-star helmets for considerably less. And it is intermediate oval — the single thing most likely to make it wrong for you regardless of any rating.
What it gives back is five SHARP stars, a large stepless sun visor and acoustics testers single out.
When something wears out
The Pinlock EVO lens has a service life independent of the visor, and it catches people out. The silicone bead hardens over a couple of seasons and breath begins to creep in at the edges. If a screen that used to stay clear now mists around its perimeter, replace the lens rather than the visor.
It is stocked separately and matched to the CNS-1C.
