DescriptionThe whole story▼
Ultra in blue and red is the most saturated helmet in this range and one of very few here built entirely from colour rather than from colour laid over black.
Four stars from SHARP — and this is the helmet they tested
🔵 A rating cannot rescue a bad fit. A four-star helmet in the wrong size protects worse than a three-star one that fits, because the liner only works where it is in contact with your head.
🟢 Take the SHARP result as a reason to shortlist this helmet, then decide it on how it fits.
A flip-up with P/J dual homologation
🟢 The honest summary of the format: a modular helmet is a compromise between a full-face and a jet, and it is heavier than either. What you buy is versatility, and on a touring helmet that is usually the right purchase.
🔵 The Advant X weighs 1600 g and rotates its bar 180 degrees to the rear.
HPFC composite, multi-density EPS — and only two shell sizes
🔵 If you take an XS or a 3XL, the two-shell split is the specification to be aware of. An XS is built on the smaller shell and a 3XL on the larger, but within each pair the padding does more of the work than it would on a three-shell helmet.
Try it on rather than ordering on the tape alone.
About the Ultra blue and red graphic
Removing the dark base changes more than it sounds like it should. On the black-based graphics here the coloured elements are marks on a shell; with no neutral ground the whole helmet reads as coloured, and the geometry becomes structure rather than decoration. It is a bolder object and a measurably more visible one — both blue and red sit well above black on the value scale, and there is no dark area for a driver's eye to lose the shape in. Blue in particular is the most practical saturated colour on a helmet: motorway film reads as an obvious deposit on white and a haze on black, and against a deep blue it largely disappears between washes. 🔵 The red is the UV-sensitive element, as on every helmet, so store this one out of prolonged direct sun. Wash it wet and dry it with a soft cloth — a dry wipe is what puts fine swirls into a clear coat. Against the Nova white finish at the same price, this is the more unusual of the two bright helmets and the easier to keep looking clean, since there is no white area to show motorway film. The Nova has the edge on outright conspicuity because white sits higher on the value scale than blue does. Both are considerably more visible than any of the black-based graphics here.
Twin Visor, Pinlock 120 and a tinted spare
The main visor releases from its mechanism without tools, so swapping to the supplied tint is a roadside job of about a minute.
🟢 Most riders with an integrated shield rarely bother, which is rather the point of having one.
Chin and crown intakes, channelled EPS
Ventilation is the specification most exaggerated in helmet marketing, because it is the hardest for a buyer to verify and the easiest to describe impressively.
🔵 Ours is deliberately flat: chin and crown intakes, channelled multi-density EPS, an exhaust port, a breath deflector — and no independent measurement of any of it.
Metal buckle and the Emergency Release System
A micrometric ratchet is the right closure on a helmet you fasten and unfasten many times a day, which is exactly what a touring modular is used for.
🔵 Its one weakness is the preset length. Check it periodically and after anyone else has worn the helmet.
Lining, comfort — and the X-Static this version does not have
🔵 If a helmet is comfortable for twenty minutes and unbearable after two hours, the cause is almost always one pressure point rather than the overall size. Because the pads come out and swap individually, that is usually fixable.
The interior here is fully removable.
Where it sits in LS2's range
Where this sits in a shortlist: a composite touring modular with P/J approval, a 4-star SHARP result, a complete box and a 180-degree chin bar.
🔵 Its two honest weaknesses are 1600 g and two shell sizes.
Care and replacement parts
Vent covers, the breath deflector and the sun visor mechanism are all replaceable, which matters on parts operated several thousand times over a helmet's life.
🔵 Nothing on this helmet that moves is sealed into the shell.
In the box
- LS2 FF901 Advant X helmet — Ultra, Blue and red (HPFC composite shell)
- Clear main visor, fitted, with tool-free quick release
- Pinlock® 120 MaxVision™ XLT anti-fog insert
- A complete second visor in a tint — 🔵 daylight use only in most European jurisdictions
- Integrated drop-down sun visor, fitted
- Breath deflector, fitted
- 🔵 No intercom — the helmet is prepared for a Bluetooth system, which is a separate purchase
Size guide
Head shapes vary more than sizes do, and the difference is felt rather than measured. Long-oval heads press front and back; round heads press at the temples.
🔵 Ten minutes with the helmet on tells you which is happening.
