DescriptionThe whole story▼
Navy is the most under-chosen colour in motorcycling and, on a touring helmet, close to the most practical. It is also the only solid here that is neither a neutral nor a compromise.
Four stars from SHARP — and this is the helmet they tested
🟢 The result belongs to this helmet and not to its sibling. LS2 sells an Advant X Carbon with a 6K carbon shell at 1550 g; SHARP tested composite fibre at 1.6 kg.
🔵 Different shell, different mass. We do not carry the stars across, and the carbon pages say so too.
A flip-up with P/J dual homologation
🔵 A modular helmet is a full-face with a joint in it, and the joint is a structural discontinuity — that is simply true and it is why flip-ups rarely top the SHARP tables.
🟢 What the Advant X does about it is carry P/J homologation and a 4-star result, which together are about as good as the format gets.
HPFC composite, multi-density EPS — and only two shell sizes
🔵 The shell and the liner do different jobs. The HPFC composite resists penetration and spreads impact load across a wide area; the multi-density EPS absorbs the energy by crushing.
Only the shell survives. The liner crushes once and does not recover, and composite hides damage better than thermoplastic does.
About the solid navy blue finish
Deep blue does two useful things at once. It sits in the part of the spectrum where road grime shows least — the grey film a long motorway day deposits reads as an obvious deposit on white and as a haze on black, and against navy it effectively disappears between washes. And it sits meaningfully above black on the value scale, so it separates from tarmac appreciably better in the flat light that a European autumn supplies for weeks at a time. On a helmet that will be washed occasionally rather than religiously and ridden in whatever weather arrives, both of those matter over five years. 🔵 There is a third, less measurable point: navy is the finish that looks most deliberate rather than most default, and on a helmet at this level that is worth noting. Ordinary gloss care applies — wash wet, dry with something soft, never dry-wipe. Set against the six solids as a group, navy occupies a useful middle: better hidden dirt than white, better conspicuity than either black, and more character than the two greys. If you want one plain finish that does not force a compromise in any single direction, this is it — and it carries exactly the same specification and the same SHARP result as the graphics.
Twin Visor, Pinlock 120 and a tinted spare
🟢 Check what a helmet includes before comparing prices. This box contains the Pinlock 120 MaxVision XLT and a full tinted visor; on many rivals both are extras, which quietly raises the real price.
A breath deflector is supplied as well.
Chin and crown intakes, channelled EPS
🔵 Wind noise is left unrated here. No independent measurement is published for this model — SHARP measures impact, not acoustics — and a manufacturer's feature list is not a result.
Modular helmets are generally noisier than full-faces because of the joint, but we are not going to put a number on it.
Metal buckle and the Emergency Release System
🔵 Worth being clear what the Emergency Release is not: it is not a quick-release for you. It is designed to be operated by somebody else, on you, at a roadside, and it should be left alone otherwise.
The micrometric buckle is what you use every day.
Lining, comfort — and the X-Static this version does not have
🔵 A new helmet should feel firm everywhere and painful nowhere. Padding compresses over the first few hours and again across the first season, so the size that feels right in the shop is often a size too large by the following summer.
Buy on the snug side, and fit thicker pads later if you need them.
Where it sits in LS2's range
🟢 For touring, the argument is that everything is in the box: Pinlock 120 XLT, tinted spare visor, sun visor, breath deflector, emergency release. No follow-up order before the first cold morning.
🔵 The argument against is weight, and two shell sizes rather than three.
Care and replacement parts
🔵 The Pinlock insert is a consumable too. It is a soft-coated lens that scratches more easily than the visor behind it; when it hazes, replace it rather than living with it.
Replacement 120 MaxVision XLT inserts are stocked separately.
In the box
- LS2 FF901 Advant X helmet — Solid, Navy blue (HPFC composite shell)
- Clear main visor, fitted, with tool-free quick release
- Pinlock® 120 MaxVision™ XLT anti-fog insert
- A complete second visor in a tint — 🔵 daylight use only in most European jurisdictions
- Integrated drop-down sun visor, fitted
- Breath deflector, fitted
- 🔵 No intercom — the helmet is prepared for a Bluetooth system, which is a separate purchase
Size guide
🔵 The check that settles it: with the strap fastened, try to rotate the helmet on your head, then try to roll it forward off you. Neither should be possible.
If either is, it is too large whatever the tape said.
