The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Travel is the V85 sold with the additions already made — cases, a taller screen, heated grips, the parts most owners would have fitted in the first month anyway. Equipping a bike for distance is largely a matter of deciding what no longer has to be thought about, and consumables belong in that reckoning. An air filter restored with compressed air rather than replaced with a part number takes one entry off the list of things to carry, find, or worry about a long way from home.
Key Features
- Nothing to pack alongside it: the medium is dry, and no oil is applied at any point in its life
- Roughly twice the area of other performance media, which stretches the useful span between services
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns, woven rather than pressed
- Original airbox, original fixings, unchanged fuelling
- A workshop is optional — a garage air line does the job as well as a service department
- Two years of warranty from the date it is bought
A part you do not have to find
Distance riding is mostly logistics. A paper element is something you either carry or track down, and tracking down a specific Moto Guzzi part far from a Moto Guzzi dealer costs an afternoon at best. An oiled cotton panel is worse, because then you carry the element and the oil and still need somewhere clean and unhurried to do the job properly. This one asks for neither. It helps too that the reference is not a Guzzi part in any narrow sense: twenty-seven machines across Moto Guzzi and Aprilia use it, so the shelf it eventually turns up on may belong to a dealer for the other marque entirely.
Loaded, at a steady pace, for hours
Cases, a screen and often a passenger raise the throttle opening needed to hold any given speed, and the engine's appetite for air rises with it. That is exactly when a partly filled element begins to matter, because the pressure loss across it grows with flow. More medium means the panel works at a smaller fraction of its capacity through precisely the kind of day the Travel was bought for. It will not make the bike faster — nothing that drops into a sealed box does — but it keeps the intake from quietly tightening while you are several countries from home.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, aimed outwards from the clean face, is the whole routine and takes minutes. A wash belongs to the end of a long trip rather than the middle of one: warm water, a mild detergent, rinsing until the run-off is clear, then drying in air with no heat and no flame involved, and no refitting until it is properly dry.
