The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The MGX-21 is the least predictable thing Moto Guzzi has built in decades: a carbon-bodied bagger on a twenty-one inch front wheel, with the big twin half-buried in bodywork. The bodywork is what matters here. Panels and cases interrupt the air that would otherwise move around an air-cooled engine, and less air over the motor means a warmer engine bay, most of all at low speed. Warmth is what mobilises filter oil, and this element has none in it to mobilise.
Key Features
- Dry medium — an enclosed, warm airbox has nothing in it to soften or carry away
- Roughly double the filtering area of other performance elements
- Threads from ø 22 microns, woven to a set aperture
- Fits the series airbox without alteration and needs no remap
- Restored with compressed air, so there is no consumable to keep in stock
- Two years of warranty from the purchase date
Bodywork changes the thermal picture
An unfaired California has moving air over everything. The MGX-21 does not, and its airbox lives in a warmer place because of it. On an oiled gauze that is precisely the condition under which the film thins and travels to where the sensing elements sit, and a contaminated sensor does not fail cleanly — it reads low, the fuelling follows it down, and nothing presents as a fault. A dry weave has no such mode. Nor does it add power: what it offers is one variable fewer in a warm, enclosed space.
Small production run, widely shared part
The MGX-21 was built from 2016 to 2020 in small numbers, which normally means an uncomfortable parts tail a decade later. Not in this case. The same reference covers the whole California 1400 range, the Griso and Stelvio lines, both V85 models and Aprilia's V4 machines — twenty-seven in total, several still in production. Availability here has nothing to do with how many MGX-21s were made, and because the panel is cleaned rather than replaced, most owners will never order a second. The reference is also the whole of the identification: order by PM01S and the small production run stops being a problem to solve.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air aimed outwards from the clean side is the standard service and takes minutes. For a deeper clean use lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the run-off is clear, and dry it in air with no heat and no flame involved; it goes back into the box dry, with nothing applied to it. The PM01S maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Moto Guzzi MGX-21, 2016 to 2020. The Fitment tab carries all twenty-seven Aprilia and Moto Guzzi machines that share this element.
