The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Most air filter inspections happen after a journey, when the bike is dirty and the evidence is obvious. That is the wrong end of the trip. The useful check is the one made a week before departure, while there is still time to wash an element and let it dry, and while a worn lid seal can still be ordered. On a 1290 Super Adventure heading somewhere far away, the PM155S belongs on the pre-departure list rather than the tidy-up list.
Key Features
- Cleaned with compressed air in minutes, so a pre-trip check rarely delays anything
- Dry polyester weave at 80 microns, never oiled and never re-oiled
- About twice the filtering surface of other performance elements for this airbox
- Standard fitment: no modification to the box and no remapping afterwards
- Washable and reusable, so the pre-trip remedy is a clean rather than a purchase
- Two years of warranty from purchase
A week before, not the night before
Washing commits you to a drying period that cannot be shortened with heat, so the check has to leave room for it. A week is comfortable: blow the panel through, hold it up to a light, and if it looks heavily loaded, wash it and let it dry properly while you deal with everything else. Doing the same thing the night before departure is how elements end up refitted damp, which is the one avoidable way to spoil a good one.
What the check is really for
An intake restriction that has crept up over a winter of commuting will not announce itself. The engine management compensates quietly, fuel consumption moves by an amount nobody notices, and the first real evidence arrives on a long climb with luggage in the heat. Looking at the element beforehand removes that variable altogether, and on this part number the remedy is always the same: air, or air and water. It is worth repeating that a clean filter is not more powerful than a clean filter was last year — the point is that it is as good as it was, rather than quietly worse.
Care and cleaning
The everyday method is compressed air played across the clean face so that dirt exits outwards. The occasional method adds warm water and a mild detergent, a full rinse and unhurried air drying with no heat involved. The panel returns to the box dry, bare and seated flat. Sprint Filter's illustrated maintenance sheet is among the files in the Downloads tab, and it covers both methods in pictures.
Fitment & Compatibility
Catalogued for the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R and S, 2015 to 2026. Twelve further KTM and Husqvarna machines use this element; the Fitment tab lists them with the years each was built.
