The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The 1190 Adventure is the oldest machine on this part number, and age changes what an air filter service should be looking at. A new element in a tired airbox is a wasted part: a perished lid seal, a cracked inlet duct, a clip left loose at some earlier service — every one of those lets air into the engine without it passing through the medium at all. When the panel comes out on a bike of this vintage, the box deserves the same five minutes.
Key Features
- Dry woven polyester at 80 microns, with nothing oiled at any point
- Filtering area roughly twice that of other performance panels for this housing
- Frame dimensioned to seal against the standard lid, not a universal cut down to size
- Fits without modification and needs no fuelling changes
- Cleaned with compressed air and returned to service, year after year
- Two years of warranty, counted from the day of purchase
What to look at while the lid is off
Run a finger round the sealing face of the airbox and look for a witness mark that is even the whole way round. Check the inlet duct for splits where it flexes, the drain for blockage, and the joint towards the throttle bodies for anything that has worked loose. Wipe out whatever has collected in the base of the box before the clean element goes back in. None of that is a filter problem, and all of it decides whether the filter's rating means anything.
Why the element itself is the easy part
Everything above is inspection work; the panel is the part you can simply restore. A dry weave that is blown through comes back to the condition it left the factory in, and it does so repeatedly, so on a motorcycle of this age the air filter is one of the few components that need not have aged at all. That is a maintenance argument rather than a performance one. Fitting a PM155S recovers nothing the years have taken from a 1190 — it keeps the intake restriction low and consistent, and it takes the one induction consumable off a bike whose consumables are getting older.
Care and cleaning
Air on the clean face, moving steadily outwards, is the standard service. When the load is heavier than air will lift, wash the element by hand in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse it clean and leave it in moving air until it is dry through — heat and flames are what ruin these panels. It goes back dry and untreated. The illustrated sheet showing each stage is in the Downloads tab.
