Matt Deep Grey is the touring neutral, and on a helmet designed to be worn for eight hours at a time that is not a small thing. It is dark enough to hide a long day's road film and light enough to sit meaningfully above black in flat light.

Head-up display ready — the COMLINK interface

A head-up display in a helmet solves a specific problem: every glance at a screen on the handlebars is a glance away from the road, and on a long touring day there are hundreds of them. Projecting speed and navigation into the field of view removes that.

The EYELIGHTS system does it onto the sun visor itself, with voice control through Siri or Google and a noise-cancelling microphone in the intercom module. 🔵 Both the display and the intercom are bought separately from the helmet.

About the Matt Deep Grey finish

Value rather than colour decides both how dirty a helmet looks and how easily it is seen, and deep grey sits at a genuinely useful point on that scale. Insect strike, rain marks and the grey film a wet motorway leaves all read least against a mid-to-dark tone — they show as a haze on black and as obvious marks on white, and largely disappear here. That matters on a helmet you will not be washing every evening on a trip. At the same time a driver resolves a mid-value object against dark tarmac appreciably faster than a dark one, which is worth having on unfamiliar roads. It also happens to suit the current generation of touring motorcycles, most of which are finished in muted greys rather than in primary colours. 🔵 Like every matt finish it is washed, never polished.

The coated QSV shield — sun visor and screen in one

In poor light or after dark the sun shield does not need to be fully down for the display to work — the projection can be aimed at the lower edge of a partially deployed visor, which keeps the image in view without tinting everything above it.

That flexibility comes from the stepless mechanism. 🔵 The coating is specific to the SMART; the standard GT-Air3's QSV shield is not a projection surface.

The shell underneath — and whose five stars those are

Three outer shell sizes are what keep the proportions and the centre of gravity right across XS to XXL — a single shell padded down leaves a small head inside an oversized helmet, which on a touring helmet worn for hours is a neck problem rather than a cosmetic one.

The shell is AIM composite over multi-density EPS, with a micro-ratchet strap and EQRS. 🔵 ECE 22.06 approval covers this helmet; the SHARP five-star result belongs to the GT-Air3 entry it shares its shell basis with.

CNS-1C, Pinlock and the defogger filter

Fogging is where a touring helmet is judged, because touring means cold mornings, wet afternoons and slow traffic in between. Shoei's answer is twofold: the supplied Pinlock EVO lens on the CNS-1C, and a removable defogger filter in the chin area that can be taken out and cleaned.

🔵 The Pinlock code for this visor is DKS301. The lens is a consumable — the seal loses grip and the surface clouds after a few seasons.

Two-stage intake, 80 % more extraction

Extraction is the half of ventilation that decides whether a helmet actually flows, and it is where this generation gained most — 80 % more outlet area than the previous GT-Air, against 20 % more intake. Air only enters if there is somewhere lower in pressure for it to leave.

There is also a removable defogger filter in the chin area, which comes out for cleaning. 🔵 Chin ventilation is nonetheless the weakest part of the system in real heat.

How quiet it actually is

Worth knowing what „quiet" means in practice on a touring helmet. It is not silence; it is a lower, less fatiguing noise floor over hours — the difference between arriving tired and arriving worn out. That is the quality reviewers are describing when they call the GT-Air3's noise impressively minimal.

🔵 The rounder chin area and extended cheek pads are the design changes credited with it, and those tests were of the shell this helmet shares.

Fit, head shape and glasses

If you wear glasses this is among the easier full-face helmets to live with, and it is a documented strength rather than a claim — testers reported arms sliding effortlessly into the channelling instead of catching on the cheek pads.

The interior comes out entirely for washing, the ear area is shaped for the COMLINK hardware, and the pads are available in several thicknesses for fine-tuning.

Around 1700 grams, and the rest of the honest list

What is documented and what is not. Documented: ECE 22.06, AIM shell in three sizes, EQRS, CNS-1C with a Pinlock lens supplied, coated QSV shield, COMLINK preparation, roughly 1700 g.

🔵 Not documented: an independent test or SHARP rating of the SMART specifically. The five-star result and the 5/5 review both belong to the GT-Air3 whose shell it shares, and we say so rather than blurring the two.

Where it sits in Shoei's range

🔵 If the head-up display is not part of your plan, buy the standard GT-Air3. It is the same shell, the same visor, the same ventilation and the same five-star SHARP result, for 50 € less — the SMART's premium buys hardware provision, not a better helmet.

If it is part of your plan, buy this one; the coated sun visor cannot be added later.

When something wears out

Helmets are consumables with a long life rather than permanent objects. Shoei recommends replacement after around five years regardless of condition, and immediately after any real impact — the EPS crushes once and does not recover.

Between those points everything you touch is replaceable: CNS-1C visors, DKS301 Pinlock lenses, the coated QSV shield, all interior padding, chin strap covers and the removable defogger filter.
