DescriptionThe whole story▼
The only finish in this range chosen for a measurable reason rather than a visual one. Fluorescent yellow behaves in a way ordinary pigment cannot, and the effect lands exactly where a helmet needs it.
1350 grams, and why that is the headline
🔵 It is worth being clear about what the low weight does not buy: it is not a safety property. A lighter helmet puts less load on your neck, but the protection comes from the EPS liner, not from the mass.
The Rapid III weighs about 1350 g and carries a multi-part EPS liner under an HPTT shell.
HPTT shell, three shell sizes and ECE 22.06
🔵 The ECE plaque is riveted to the chin strap and is the only part of a helmet carrying a legal guarantee. On the Rapid III it reads 22.06.
Check it on anything you are offered second-hand: 22.05 remains legal to wear but has not been sellable new in the EU since January 2024.
No independent safety rating — and the trap that goes with it
🔵 If you are cross-shopping on safety data, be careful with model names. LS2's Stream II is rated (4 stars); the Stream before it was a different helmet. The Rapid III is unrated; the FF353 Rapid before it scored 2.
Generation, not name, is what a rating belongs to.
About the Hyper hi-vis yellow graphic
Ordinary paint reflects a portion of the light that falls on it. Fluorescent pigment does something else: it absorbs ultraviolet, which your eye cannot see at all, and re-emits that energy at a visible wavelength. The surface therefore returns more visible light than lands on it, which is why fluorescent yellow appears to glow rather than merely to be bright. It works hardest in the conditions that supply plenty of UV and very little contrast — heavy overcast, rain, dusk, the flat grey afternoons of a European winter. It is also close to the wavelength the eye is most sensitive to in daylight, which is why fire services and highway crews across Europe converged on it separately. 🔵 It fades with UV over years, so store it out of the sun, and it is unquestionably the loudest thing in this range. If conspicuity is genuinely the thing deciding your purchase, this is the finish to choose out of all nineteen and there is not a close second. The comparison worth making is not against the other graphics but against the plain white — white is excellent in daylight, and fluorescent yellow is the one that keeps working when the light goes flat.
What this helmet does not have: an internal sun visor
🔵 The trade LS2 has made here is coherent rather than cheap. Removing the shield removes weight, volume and cost all at once, and the money has gone into three shell sizes and channelled ventilation instead.
Whether that is the right trade is a question about your riding, not about the helmet.
Chin and top intakes, channelled EPS
The channelling in the EPS is the difference between air passing over your head and air passing through the helmet. Without it, the flow tends to hug the shell and never reach your scalp.
🔵 LS2 documents it for this model. It is one of the reasons the ventilation assessment here is 4 of 5 rather than 3.
Anti-fog — prepared for, not supplied
🔵 The anti-fog insert is the one place LS2 has economised on this helmet, and at this price it is a defensible place to do it — provided you know in advance.
Prepared for, not included.
Lining, closure and everyday comfort
🔵 The antibacterial treatment slows rather than prevents the smell that every used helmet eventually develops. What actually prevents it is washing the lining, which on this helmet takes two minutes to remove and refit.
Do it a few times a season.
Where it sits in LS2's range
🔵 Hold the equipment constant when comparing prices. A cheaper helmet without three shell sizes is not cheaper by the difference on the sticker; a more expensive one with a Pinlock and a sun visor included is not more expensive by as much as it looks.
The Rapid III has the shells and neither of the other two.
Care and replacement parts
🔵 Five years is the standard replacement guidance and it is not arbitrary. Adhesives, EPS and shell material all change with time, temperature and ultraviolet, whether or not the helmet has been used.
Note the date you bought it.

Size guide
🔵 Glasses change the fit. Put them on when you try the helmet and check the arms slide in without catching — on this helmet there is no internal shield to clear, so it is only the arms that matter.
That is a shape question rather than a fault.

Specification
- Model — LS2 FF820 Rapid III
- Part number — 168200853
- Colour — Hyper — Black, grey and hi-vis yellow
- Homologation — ECE 22.06
- 🔴 Safety rating — none. SHARP has no entry for the FF820, Rapid III or Rapid 3 (brand list checked directly). The 2-star result under „FF353 Rapid" belongs to the previous-generation helmet — different shell, different standard — and is deliberately not carried over. No ADAC or Certimoov result either
- Shell — HPTT injection-moulded thermoplastic; three shell sizes (2XS–S / M–L / XL–3XL)
- Weight — approx. 1350 g (±50 g), mid-size shell without accessories
- Sizes — 2XS to 3XL (eight sizes)
- 🔴 Sun visor — none. This helmet has no drop-down internal shield — unlike LS2's FF808 Stream II, FF811 Vector II and FF817 Challenger II. It is most of the reason it weighs 1350 g
- Visor — clear outer visor, scratch-resistant, tool-free change
- 🔴 Anti-fog — prepared for Pinlock® 70 MaxVision™ — the insert is NOT included. The pins are fitted; the lens is a separate purchase
- Ventilation — chin and top intakes feeding channelled EPS, with rear exhausts — two intake paths, one more than the FF817. 🔵 Assessed from the published construction; no independent airflow measurement exists
- 🔴 Wind noise — left unrated — no independent measurement is published for this model
- Retention — ratchet buckle
- Interior — hypoallergenic, antibacterial, fully removable and washable. 🔵 No branded wicking fabric (no COOLMAX or X-Static) and no magnetic wind deflector — both appear further up LS2's range
- Included — chin curtain and breath deflector, both fitted and removable
- 🔴 FIM homologation — none — a road helmet, not eligible for FIM-sanctioned competition
- Serviceability — visors, cheek pads in several thicknesses, complete lining, chin curtain, breath deflector and vent covers all available separately
- Replacement guidance — after about five years regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
