DescriptionThe whole story▼
Plain gloss white: the most visible colour in daylight, the coolest one to wear in summer sun, and the only finish here that has never been in or out of fashion because it was never a fashion.
1350 grams, and why that is the headline
1350 g is the headline here, and it is worth converting into something physical. A head weighs roughly five kilos; the helmet adds about a quarter of that, and every bump in the road multiplies the whole lot through your neck.
🔵 The figure is quoted the way manufacturers quote it — a mid-size shell without accessories — with a tolerance of ±50 g.
HPTT shell, three shell sizes and ECE 22.06
The shell is HPTT — an injection-moulded thermoplastic — in three outer sizes covering eight helmet sizes from 2XS to 3XL.
🔵 Three shells is more than the single-shell helmets at this price and fewer than the six of LS2's FF811. It is a real specification, not a rounding of one.
No independent safety rating — and the trap that goes with it
🔵 The Rapid III has no independent safety rating, and we are not going to give it one. SHARP's LS2 brand list contains no entry for a Rapid III, a Rapid 3 or an FF820.
The 2-star result you may find under „FF353 Rapid" belongs to the previous-generation helmet — a different shell, a different homologation era — and it is not carried over here.
About the solid gloss white finish
White does one thing better than any other helmet colour and it does it in the conditions that matter. A driver waiting to pull out of a side road scans at windscreen height, and what is at windscreen height on a motorcycle is your head — above the light, moving against a still background. The lighter that object is, the sooner it registers, and the advantage is at its largest in flat overcast light where every dark object collapses into the same grey. Summer adds a second argument: stationary in traffic there is no airflow to help, and a white shell reflects solar energy that a dark shell converts into heat in the liner. 🔵 What you accept in return is that it shows everything — fly strike, motorway film, the grey deposit that comes off the vehicle in front. Gloss cleans faster than matt, which takes some of the sting out of it. On safety equipment you ought to be inspecting anyway, a finish that shows dirt honestly is not entirely a disadvantage. It is also one of the four cheapest. One further thought if you are choosing between this and the matt titanium at the same price. Titanium will look cleaner for longer with less effort; white will be seen sooner at a junction on a grey afternoon. Both are the same helmet and the same money, so the decision is genuinely between low maintenance and high conspicuity rather than between better and worse.
What this helmet does not have: an internal sun visor
🔵 There is no integrated sun visor on the Rapid III. Unlike LS2's FF808 Stream II, FF811 Vector II and FF817 Challenger II, this helmet has no drop-down shield inside the shell.
That omission is most of the reason it weighs 1350 g and costs so little. Whether it is a fair trade depends on how much you would have used one.
Chin and top intakes, channelled EPS
Ventilation runs in through chin and top intakes, across channelled EPS, and out through rear exhausts — a genuine through-flow path rather than a set of holes.
🔵 The channelling is the part worth noting: LS2 documents it for this model and does not for the FF808 Stream II.
Anti-fog — prepared for, not supplied
🔵 The visor is prepared for a Pinlock® 70 MaxVision™ insert — the insert is not supplied. The pins are fitted; the lens is a separate purchase.
„Pinlock ready" is frequently read as „Pinlock included", and the difference is worth stating.
Lining, closure and everyday comfort
The interior is hypoallergenic, antibacterial and fully washable, and it comes out by hand in a couple of minutes.
🔵 What it is not is a branded moisture-wicking fabric — there is no COOLMAX or X-Static here, as there is on LS2's more expensive models.
Where it sits in LS2's range
The Rapid III is LS2's high-volume road full-face — the light, inexpensive one — and it sits below the FF808 Stream II and well below the carbon FF807 Dragon.
🔵 Within this model the price ladder is entirely paint: the four plain finishes and the slightly pricier fifteen graphics share one shell, one liner and one specification.Care and replacement parts
The parts that wear are all replaceable: visors, cheek pads in several thicknesses, the complete lining, the chin curtain, the breath deflector and the vent covers.
🔵 The EPS liner is not among them. It crushes once and does not recover.
