Why 18 beats 5

Five impact points, as the old 22.05 standard required, leaves gaps a helmet could theoretically be engineered around. Eighteen points, spread across multiple speeds under the ECE 22.06 standard this helmet meets, leaves far less room for that. 22.06 also adds an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil and a rotational Brain Injury Criterion score, with the visor, Pinlock and a comms unit fitted for testing. It has been mandatory across the EU since January 2024, and this certificate carries no FIM suffix.

Not a scaled-down flagship

It would be easy to assume a helmet at this price point is simply a cut-down version of Shark's more expensive lines. It is not: the shell, the CFD-and-wind-tunnel aero work, and the ECE 22.06 certification described below are the D-Skwal 3's own, built to this helmet's own brief rather than trimmed from something else.

Two shells for six sizes

Rather than one shell stretched across XS to XXL, this helmet uses two — keeping proportions closer to sensible at both ends of the range. A washable, removable liner and cheek pads cut for glasses complete the everyday fit picture.

The Dark Shadow matte finish, in use

Matte shells generally hide fine scuffs under direct light better than gloss, at the cost of showing fingerprints more readily. This titanium-toned grey sits lighter than the other two Dark Shadow variants, closer to a brushed-metal look than a near-black one, while sharing the same matte surface treatment across the trio.

The titanium Dark Shadow carries the same EUR 249.99 as its two siblings. All three trade a clear visor for a smoke-tinted one at that price step, with the shell and certification held constant.

What the vents are rated for

Four vents — two chin intakes, two crown exhausts — cover this helmet's airflow, and all four work with gloved hands. A journalist's extended test called them adequate for keeping the visor clear under normal conditions, while flagging that a 30-degree day pushed past what the vents alone could manage.

A closer look at Dark Shadow, in titanium

The lightest of the three Dark Shadow variants, this Titan shade reads closer to a brushed-metal silver-grey than the near-black or gunmetal tones of its two siblings, while sharing the same formula: a plain matte shell paired with a smoke-tinted VZ visor rather than a clear one. Because all three Dark Shadow decors share that visor pairing and the absence of any printed graphic, the choice between them comes down entirely to how light or dark a grey a rider wants the shell itself to read — this is the lightest of the three, and the one that will show the least contrast against a bright riding jacket.

Like the rest of the Dark Shadow trio, the smoke-tinted VZ visor here is a separate purchase from a clear replacement, should one be wanted later. Being the lightest grey of the three, this titanium shade will show fingerprints most readily of the trio under close inspection.

The same night-riding consideration applies here as with the other two Dark Shadow colourways: a smoke-tinted visor reduces low-light visibility compared with the clear visor fitted to the Blank decors, worth weighing for anyone who rides regularly after dark rather than mostly in daylight.

A mid-pack weight, stated for the smaller shell

1,540 g is Shark's published weight for the D-Skwal 3's first, smaller shell size — riders on the larger shell (L-XXL) should expect it to run a little above that. It is a number that means most on a long ride, when the neck has been supporting it continuously, and it lands inside the roughly 1,250-1,800 g band typical of road-legal full-face helmets.

Two shell sizes across six helmet sizes

XS and S share the smaller of the two shells; L through XXL share the larger. That split keeps the shell-to-head ratio closer to sensible at both ends of the range than a single-shell design would manage, at the cost of the tooling complexity of running two moulds.

Features this decor does not carry

MIPS, EQRS and tear-off posts are all absent, as is a factory IRID photochromic visor (Shark keeps that for the AERON GP, AERON and RACE R PRO). Certification is ECE 22.06 only, no FIM suffix. SHARP does list a 'Shark D-Skwal', but it is the 2018 helmet under the older ECE 22.05 standard — a different generation from this D-Skwal 3, which has no SHARP score.

Anti-scratch, anti-fog, tool-free

Three practical properties of this VZ400-family visor: an anti-scratch surface treatment, a pre-fitted Pinlock 70 insert with adjustable tension against fogging, and a central lock that releases without tools. It also carries an Optical class 1 rating, a vortex generator and thickness tapering from 3 mm to 2.2 mm, shared with the Skwal i3, Skwal i Cup, Skwal Cup and Ridill 2.

Honest treatment of a hard-to-measure topic

Wind noise varies by bike, screen and riding position enough that a single decibel figure rarely tells the full story, and none is claimed here. An independent 1,700-mile test called the helmet pretty loud without earplugs and noted a whistle above roughly 25 mph with the visor cracked.

Whichever size is chosen, the two-shell-size construction described earlier keeps the same proportions across decor HE0925A08's full XS-XXL run. The two chin intakes and two crown exhausts described earlier are fitted identically to decor HE0925A08, independent of its finish or colour. Keeping decor HE0925A08 out of direct sunlight when not in use helps a matte finish keep its look for longer. The Pinlock 70 insert fitted to decor HE0925A08 is the same VZ400-family part described earlier, shared across five current Shark road helmets. Decor HE0925A08 carries the same 2206 homologation code as the rest of the D-Skwal 3 range, with no FIM suffix. A Sharktooth or SENA intercom unit fits decor HE0925A08's shell at purchase or later, without any modification needed. Decor HE0925A08's micrometric buckle and multi-density EPS liner are identical to every other D-Skwal 3 on sale, independent of the graphic on top.
