Axium Mat takes the same shape as its two glossy siblings and finishes it flat, with white replacing the red or blue accent lines against a matte anthracite-and-carbon base -- the lightest-looking of the three Axium colourways despite being built on an identical dark shell. It is also the only Axium finish priced above the graphic tier, for the same reason the matte Mekarium costs more than its glossy version: the coating itself.

A matte topcoat has no bearing on what this shell had to pass: UNECE R 22-06, identical to its two glossy Axium siblings. The standard tests more impact points than 22.05, several speeds each, and scores rotational force for the first time.

The shell material a matte coat cannot hide or improve

Under any finish, Shark's own listing puts this shell in the "Fibre" category: fiberglass and carbon fibre woven as one, not a solid carbon-aramid piece, cast across two mould sizes over a foam liner graded through several firmness stages. Gloss or matte changes nothing about that structural layer, which matches the plain-fibreglass Spartan GT Pro's basic shape at a genuine, moderate weight advantage.

1,465 g, and why it matters more on a longer ride

Shark's smaller-shell figure is 1,465 g, with the bigger sizes on a second mould adding a touch more mass. The number reads the same whatever the finish; what changes is how it feels over distance -- building gradually into neck and shoulder fatigue rather than showing up in the opening minutes.

Ventilation, and what genuinely shuts off

Three front intakes and two rear extractors run Shark's double-Venturi airflow system, engineered to work below motorway speed as well as above it. Visordown's independent test confirms the chin-bar vents and rear exhaust ports genuinely close, so this shell vents freely on a hot ride and seals tight for a cold one -- decent airflow by that review's own rating, not class-leading.

Visor: central lock, Pinlock fitted, tint limits

This decor's VZ300 visor is shared hardware with the Spartan RS and Spartan RS Carbon. Optical class 1 glazing tapers 2.8 mm to 2.2 mm, secured by a central grip and lock rather than a side catch, arriving with a clear Pinlock 120 insert already mounted. Blue, pink and red iridium finishes suit daytime roads; smoke, silver and rainbow stay for the track alone.

Sun visor and daily-use details

A single external slider drops the UV380 anti-fog sun visor, gloved hand and all. The mount comes off tool-free, glasses arms fit a groove cut into the shell, and Shark lists Sharktooth and SENA compatibility for this helmet.

Safety kit, without extra claims

Firmness-graded EPS absorbs impact energy under the shell, and the strap closes with a double-D ring rather than a buckle that can loosen under load. A first responder can free the cheek pads via Shark's own Emergency Release hardware without twisting an injured rider's neck -- an EQRS whatever it is called. MIPS does not appear in Shark's documentation for this helmet, and none is claimed here.

What lines the inside, and how it comes apart

ALVEOTECH's antimicrobial textile forms the lining, cut to 3D-shaped cheek pads as Shark's own collection text describes rather than flat foam padding out extra space. According to independent testing the pads, the neck roll and the skull cap all detach for a wash. Six clothing sizes, XS up to XXL, split across the pair of shell moulds this whole range is built on.

Why a matte finish costs more, again

As with the matte Mekarium decor in this same range, a uniform matte coat is harder to apply cleanly than a glossy clear coat -- surface flaws that gloss would hide show up under matte, so the finishing process demands more consistency. Shark prices Axium Mat slightly above its two glossy Axium siblings, the same finish premium applied consistently across this range rather than a one-off markup.

Shark's own price data shows four real steps: Spartan RS Fibre at entry level, Spartan RS Carbon above it, the non-carbon Spartan GT Pro with Sport-GT comfort but no carbon shell, and Spartan GT Pro Carbon on top. This decor sits in the upper part of that top step, matched by the matte Mekarium decor at the same finish premium.

Wind noise, without an invented number

No independently measured decibel figure exists for this helmet, so none is stated. BikeSocial's road test of the 22-06 generation credits a tighter, elasticated neck roll built specifically to reduce wind noise, at a small cost to how easily the helmet goes on; Visordown separately describes wind noise in normal riding as kept to a relative minimum. Neither is lab data, and neither is treated as such here.

Spare parts

Shark's visor stock for the RS and GT Pro sits under one listing, and the Range Book confirms the VZ300 part crosses three related Spartan models rather than being unique to this one. A scratched or clouded visor is replaceable rather than a reason to retire the helmet.

What this helmet does not have

No MIPS or comparable rotational-impact liner is fitted, and none is claimed. This visor platform is not documented as tear-off compatible. SHARP's 4-star, August-2021 result belongs to a separate, older helmet with no "Pro" in its own name, and that rating is not carried over here. No independent wind-noise figure exists either, and none has been invented to fill that gap.
