DescriptionThe whole story▼
Where Dark Shadow Dual splits gloss against matte, this version commits to matte across the whole shell — the same Dark Shadow name, a flatter, more uniform read. Nothing about the shape changes: the spoiler, the vent intakes and the visor surround are all identical to every other Jet Cup decor, but a fully matte shell absorbs light instead of throwing highlights across the curves, which changes how the helmet reads from across a car park more than any graphic would.
The spoiler does not know what finish it is wearing
Shark engineered and wind-tunnel tested the rear spoiler for the Jet Cup shell on its own account, not as a carryover from the full-face Skwal Cup's own aero work, specifically to manage airflow separation at the back of an open-face helmet — a shape with more exposed surface for turbulent air than a full-face's sealed front. That function is entirely about the moulded geometry, not the paint on top of it, so a full-matte shell performs identically to a gloss one here.
Shell and closure
Lexan polycarbonate, in two separate shell sizes (XS-M and L-XXL, per independent press testing of this model) rather than one mould scaled across the whole range. The closure is a micrometric buckle, not the double-D ring fitted to the full-face Skwal Cup — fine-step adjustment, one-handed release.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests, on an open face
Every Skwal Jet Cup, this decor included, is certified to ECE 22.06 — the standard that became mandatory for newly homologated helmets across the EU in January 2024, replacing 22.05. The practical difference is substantial: eighteen impact points tested at a range of speeds instead of five points at one speed, a new oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that loads the shell with a glancing, twisting force, and a scored Brain Injury Criterion covering rotational energy specifically. The visor, the Pinlock insert and any fitted comms unit are all part of the test, not removed for it. The Norme code is 2206, without an FIM suffix: this is road approval.
Weight and neck load
1,430 g (+/-50 g) is Shark's own figure, for the smaller of the two shell sizes. Every gram of a helmet sits above the head's own weight and is carried through every turn of the head across a ride, not just absorbed in a single impact — the open face's missing chin bar is most of why this number sits comfortably within the typical road-helmet band rather than pushing toward the top of it.
Ventilation
The shell draws air through two front intakes and pushes it out through two rear extractors. With no chin bar to route around, that air reaches the rider directly rather than being channelled sideways first — one of the quieter advantages an open face has over a full-face helmet, even if it is rarely the first thing people notice about a jet design.
Visor and Pinlock
This shell wears the VZ670 visor: Optical Class 1, side-locking, anti-scratch treated, and carrying a vortex generator at its edge to manage airflow around the aperture. It comes with a Max Vision Pinlock 70 insert already fitted, adjustable for tension rather than a one-size clip-in. Shark's iridium and dark-smoke tints for this shell are all marked racing use only — clear is the only version road-legal for everyone.
Sun visor and everyday use
A sun visor built into the shell drops down on its own control, and the interior leaves room for glasses arms without the pressure point some helmets create. SENA intercom compatibility is listed for this helmet by name.
Fit: what six sizes across two shells means
XS-M sit in the smaller of the two shells, L-XXL in the larger, covering six sizes in total. Two moulds instead of one keeps proportions sensible at both ends of the range and keeps the quoted weight figure relevant beyond the single smallest size it is measured on.
Wind noise, honestly
Every jet helmet, including this one, runs louder at speed than a full-face by construction: no chin bar, and a visor edge closer to the jaw. The spoiler and the visor's vortex generator both work against turbulence noise, but they do not turn an open face into a sealed one. No decibel number exists for this model from Shark, and none appears here.
Price ladder
259.99 EUR, matching Dark Shadow Dual — the full-matte and dual-finish treatments cost the same within this range, the choice is purely which one you prefer to look at.
| Skwal Jet | 189.99 – 279.99 € | same VZ670 visor family, no rear spoiler |
| Skwal Jet Cup | 239.99 – 309.99 € | this helmet |
| Skwal Cup | 269.99 – 339.99 € | same spoiler and CFD-developed shell, full-face |
| Skwal i3 Jet | 289.99 – 349.99 € | open face, adds an LED brake light this helmet does not have |
Spares
Visors are shared across the Jet family — this helmet, the plain Skwal Jet and the Skwal i3 Jet all draw from the same Shark spares collection and the same VZ67005PINCTU Pinlock 70 part, so replacements are easy to source.
What this helmet does not protect
An open face means exactly that: no chin bar, on this decor or any other in the range. Impacts that would load a full-face helmet's chin section meet nothing equivalent here. ECE 22.06 tests what the shell does have — the shell itself, the retention system, the visor as fitted — not what it deliberately lacks. Riders should treat that as a genuine trade-off for the open face's airflow and visibility, not a technicality.
The matte itself
A single, even matte coat runs across the whole shell with no gloss break, which keeps fingerprints and light scuffs less visible over months of regular handling than a gloss finish would. It is the plainest possible version of Dark Shadow — the name and the shape, without the dual-tone contrast of its sibling decor.
Who this decor suits
A full matte black Dark Shadow suits riders who want the Jet Cup's name and shape without any finish variation at all — the plainest possible read of this decor family, chosen by people who have already decided matte is what they want and do not need the dual-tone version to get there. It is also the decor that photographs most consistently across different lighting, since there is no gloss-to-matte transition line to catch a flash or reflect a streetlight unevenly. A helmet without a single break in its finish is also the easiest of the nine to keep looking new, since there is no edge for wax or polish residue to build up along.
