Pipen is the third graphic family and C8 is its pink-and-purple reading — the least conventional finish in the range, and one of very few genuinely distinctive pairings available on a helmet at this price.

What this helmet is — and what changed for the R

🔵 Be clear about what this helmet is for. Commuting, everyday riding, country roads at ordinary speeds — and a rider who wants a sun visor and an anti-fog lens without paying three times as much for them.

It is not a long-distance touring helmet, and its predecessor's noted weakness was ventilation.

About the Pipen C8 graphic

Pink and purple sit close together in hue and far apart in value, which is why the combination works on a curved shell where two similar-value colours would blur into one. It is also a pairing that has aged unusually well on helmets — it belongs to no particular decade, unlike the neons and chrome effects of the periods around it. On a commuting helmet the high overall value is a genuine conspicuity benefit in flat light, which matters more than the colour choice itself. 🔵 Gloss finishes show swirls if dry-wiped, and printed graphics cannot be touched in.

The SHARP stars that belong to a different Thunder

Two helmets share most of a name and only one has been tested. MT Thunder 3 carries four SHARP stars; the Thunder 4 R SV carries none, and neither did the Thunder 4 SV it replaces.

🔵 They are separate helmets with separate shells, and the rating does not carry across. Everything else on this page is documented; that figure simply does not exist for this model.

HIRP, two shells and ECE 22.06

🔵 Compare this against a composite helmet honestly. A fibreglass or carbon shell of equal strength would be 150–300 g lighter and cost two to three times as much. That is the entire argument, and it is legitimate in both directions.

The Thunder 4 R SV is HIRP at roughly 1500 g ±50, in two outer shell sizes.

MT-QVSS, the visor lock and the Pinlock in the box

🔵 Order visors and lenses by designation rather than by helmet name. This helmet uses the MT-V-28C visor on the MT-M-28X mechanism, and the DKS435 Pinlock lens — none of which interchanges with other MT models.

One lens is supplied with the helmet.

The integrated sun visor

The „SV" in the model name is the sun visor, and it is the reason to choose this over the non-SV versions in MT's range. It is a genuine functional difference rather than a trim level.

🔵 It deploys from one slider, retracts completely, and needs no second visor carried in your luggage.

Enlarged intakes and a revised spoiler

🔵 If you ride in genuine heat, treat ventilation as the open question on this helmet rather than as a strength. The intakes are enlarged over a predecessor that was criticised for them, and nobody has independently measured the result.

A pale shell helps considerably more than any vent setting in slow traffic, and this range offers several.

Interior, fit and retention

Seven sizes from XS to 3XL is a wider range than most helmets in this class offer, and it is worth knowing if you are hard to fit at either end.

🔵 The lining is fully removable and washable throughout the range, and retention is a micrometric ratchet.

Intercom preparation and speaker pockets

„Intercom-ready" means different things on different helmets. Here it means dedicated speaker pockets in the lining and preparation for MT's own MT-B01 Rider Sync system.

🔵 It does not mean a system is included. Budget for that separately if you want one.

Where it sits in MT's range

The clearest way to place this helmet: it is the everyday full-face in a range built almost entirely on one shell platform, and it is the model MT is best known for.

🔵 Its predecessor scored 4/5 with MCN. This generation adds reworked intakes, a revised spoiler and an improved visor action.

When something wears out

The serviceable parts list on this helmet is short because the helmet is simple: visor, Pinlock lens, lining, cheek pads, sun visor and nose deflector.

🔵 Between them they cover everything except the shell and the EPS liner — neither of which is replaceable after an impact.
