DescriptionThe whole story▼
Matt carbon is the finish that makes an AGV Pista GP RR S look deliberately unfinished. There is no colour on this one and no gloss either: a satin clear coat lets the weave show through without the mirror, the EVO Spoiler is matt black, and the only bright things on the helmet are the tricolour badge and the red trim of the inner lining at the neck. Priced level with the gloss Mono, it is the quietest-looking helmet in a range that also contains a Valentino Rossi replica.
Start with the number that decides how your neck feels
1,500 grams in the first shell size. AGV publishes that figure and it is the one to argue with first, because everything else about a race helmet is downstream of it.
A helmet does not press down on you. It hangs off the top of your spine on a lever roughly the length of your skull, and the force at the base of your neck rises with airflow and with every time you turn your head to look through a corner. Two hundred grams sounds like nothing standing in a shop. Measured across a twenty-five minute session of hard braking, tucking and shoulder checks, it is the difference between a stiff neck on Sunday evening and no neck at all.
Read the figure carefully, though. First shell size means the smallest of the four shells, so an XL weighs more than the number on the box. It is also not directly comparable to a rival who quotes a mid size. Against the field we stock, the Pista GP RR S sits mid-pack: lighter than an Alpinestars Supertech R10, heavier than an LS2 FF805 Thunder GP Pro.
Matt carbon behaves differently from gloss
A satin clear coat scatters light instead of reflecting it, which is why the weave reads as texture rather than as pattern and why the helmet photographs flat. It also changes how you clean it.
Matt surfaces hold onto oil. Fingerprints around the visor pivot, sun cream from a forehead, fuel splash on the chin bar all sit on the surface instead of running off it, and rubbing hard to shift them is exactly what you must not do: pressure burnishes a satin coat and leaves a shiny patch that will not go away. Warm water, a drop of mild soap, no pressure, no polish, no solvent. Done that way the finish will outlast the five-year service life of the shell.
Five densities of foam, four sizes of shell
Inside the carbon sits an EPS liner made in five densities and produced in four sizes. Both halves of that sentence matter.
Multiple densities let a single liner handle impacts of different severity: a soft zone crushes progressively in a low-speed hit where a hard one would simply bounce the head, while the dense zones stop a heavy strike from bottoming out onto the shell. Producing the liner in four sizes means the crush depth under an XS rider's temple is the depth the engineers intended, rather than whatever is left after a universal liner has been trimmed to fit.
The fit system, and what you can change about it
AGV calls it 360 degree Adaptive Fit. In practice the interior is built from parts you can swap rather than one moulded lining: a crown pad in three adjustable pieces, cheek pads in Shalimar fabric, and a neck roll shaped to wrap rather than to sit.
The helmet ships with an interiors customisation kit containing a top crown pad, a rear crown pad and a set of cheek pads, so the first fitting session happens on your kitchen table rather than through a returns label. That matters more on a race helmet than on a road one, because the target fit is tight enough that half a size of cheek padding changes the answer.
The lining is made without stitching in the areas that touch the face, the crown pad is elastic breathable microfibre, the cheek fabric is chosen to stay put under airflow, and AGV's Microsense material handles the contact patches at the jaw. All of it comes out and goes in the wash.
Air in, heat out
Five intakes at the front, two extractors at the back, metal in both cases. The metal is not decoration: the vents sit on the leading edges where a plastic scoop would flex and chatter at speed, and they are shaped to feed the channels cut through the EPS rather than just the gap under the shell.
The intakes do not close. Vent covers are supplied to blank them off, which is the racing way of doing it, and it is a decision you make in the garage rather than on the move.
The visor, in short
Race 3 MPLK, 5 mm thick, optical class 1, 190 degrees of horizontal field and 85 degrees vertical, on a metal mechanism with a lock and a micro-opening detent. The Pinlock 120XLT MaxVision insert is in the box, tear-off posts are fitted, and the patented quick release takes the visor off without tools. Every Race 3 tint AGV makes fits, including the five iridium mirrors.
Straight talk about what you are buying
This helmet has no FIM homologation. It is certified to ECE 22.06 and DOT, which covers road use everywhere in Europe and every track day we know of, but it does not satisfy the FIM FRHPhe requirement that many licensed racing series now impose. If you race under a licence, ask your organiser before you order.
It also has no sun visor, no intercom preparation and no glasses channel, and the neck roll is cut for a leather race suit collar rather than a jacket. Wind noise will be high: there is no measured figure for this model and we are not going to invent one, but permanently open metal intakes and a tight aperture around the eyes make for a loud helmet. Earplugs are part of the kit, not an accessory.
Where the money goes
The Mono Matt sits above every other race helmet on our shelves. This is the honest comparison, using each manufacturer's own published numbers.
| Helmet | Shell | Weight | Shell sizes | FIM |
| AGV Pista GP RR S Mono Matt | 100% carbon fibre | 1,500 g | 4 | no |
| Alpinestars Supertech R10 | Carbon multi-composite | 1,540 g | 4 | yes |
| Shoei X-SPR PRO | AIM+ fibre matrix | 1,450 g | 4 | yes |
| Arai RX-7V Evo | Fibreglass composite | 1,550 g | 3 | yes |
| Nexx X.R3R Pro FIM Evo | X-PRO carbon composite | 1,350 g | 3 | yes |
| MT-Helmets KRE 2 PLUS | Carbon | 1,250 g | 4 | yes |
Three things are on the AGV side of that table: a shell in carbon alone rather than a composite blend, four shell sizes where most of the field manages three, and a box that already contains the parts you would otherwise buy. Against it stands the missing FIM certificate and a weight that is nothing special. Which way that balance falls depends entirely on whether you hold a race licence.
Parts you will need one day
Cheek pads compress, crown pads absorb sweat, visor mechanisms take a knock in a crash. AGV lists all of them for the Pista GP RR S, and nearly all are the same part numbers used on the Pista GP RR and Corsa R: mechanism kit, hook repair kit, breath deflector, wind protector, crown and cheek pads, fit customisation kit, hydration system. A helmet that shares a parts catalogue with two predecessors is a helmet you can still keep on the road in 2031.
Choosing a size
Run a tape measure round the widest part of your head, a finger's width above the eyebrows, and compare it against the chart linked here. Expect firm pressure on the cheeks out of the box; that is the intended starting point, and the pads give a little as they bed in. If you sit on a boundary, take the smaller size for circuit use and the larger for road miles, then fine-tune with the pads from the customisation kit.
