DescriptionThe whole story▼

Park a Skwal i Cup next to the rest of Shark's current range and the eye reads it as one more jet: the spoiler, the compact proportions, the name that echoes Skwal Cup and Skwal i3 Jet in the same breath. It is none of those things. Underneath the Dark Shadow Mat finish sits a full-face shell with a chin bar, built around the same VZ400 visor family as the closed-face Skwal i3 and Skwal Cup, not the open VZ670 group the jets share. The resemblance to its jet siblings is packaging, not engineering, and this decor is the only version of it Shark has put into the 2027 range.

A full face wearing a jet's silhouette

Nothing about where Shark places this helmet on a shelf changes what protects your jaw. The Skwal i Cup carries a chin bar and a closed lower face the way the Skwal i3 and the plain Skwal Cup do, and its visor locks centrally rather than from the side — the same mechanism as those two, and the opposite of the side-locking visors fitted to every jet in this year's line-up. Shark's own spare-parts sheet groups the Pinlock insert for this helmet with the Skwal i3, D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2 and Skwal Cup, not with the jet family. Read the shape before you read the name.

Not the Skwal Cup, either

The naming is close enough to cause a mix-up at the counter, so it is worth stating directly: the Skwal Cup that has been in Shark's range for longer carries no light of any kind. This is a different, newer helmet built around the same full-face platform, and the letter that separates the two names is the entire story — one has a light system integrated into its structure, the other does not, and no fact from the plain Cup belongs here.

A vertical light instead of a badge

Where a badge or a painted flash would normally sit, the Skwal i Cup runs a vertical LED strip built directly into the rear spoiler. Shark's own framing for it borrows from Formula 1 rear-light clusters rather than motorcycle convention: a built-in accelerometer reads deceleration and triggers the light automatically under braking, with no wiring back to the bike and nothing for the rider to switch on before a ride beyond whatever the system does on its own. It sits low on the spoiler's trailing edge, more a signature than a headlamp, there to be noticed from behind rather than to light the road ahead.

Whether it's road-legal here, honestly

Say plainly what is and is not known: Shark's LED brake-light systems on other current models in this range carry the same standing instruction — check your own country's rules before relying on the light — and no E-mark or type-approval number for any vehicle-lighting function was found for this helmet either. Unlike the i3 and i3 Jet, no dedicated owner's manual for the Skwal i Cup's light system could be located to quote directly, so this is not carried forward as a confirmed grey area copied from a sibling model; it is stated as genuinely undocumented. Treat the light as a visibility accessory whose German road status this listing cannot settle, not as a certified vehicle light.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

The certification on this shell is ECE 22.06, the standard that replaced 22.05 as the mandatory EU approval for newly homologated helmets from January 2024. Where the old test struck a shell at five fixed points, 22.06 strikes eighteen, across multiple impact speeds rather than one, and adds an oblique impact against an abrasive anvil that the old standard never ran — a glancing, twisting hit rather than a straight drop, scored for the rotational brain-injury criterion that kind of impact produces. Every accessory fitted at the time of testing, visor included, is tested on the helmet, not removed for a cleaner result. The price list carries the code 2206 with no FIM suffix: a road-approval standard, not a competition one.

Weight as a number your neck carries all day

Shark states 1,555 g for this helmet's first, smallest shell size. That figure sits above every jet in the 2027 range covered in this batch — expected, since a chin bar, a full liner around the jaw and the LED hardware in the spoiler all add mass a jet shell simply does not carry — and it is a number worth taking seriously rather than glancing past: every gram of it rides above the neck through a full day on the bike, not just at the moment of impact it is there to survive.

Visor and Pinlock

The visor is Optical Class 1 and carries a vortex generator at its edge, fitted with a Max Vision Pinlock 70 insert with adjustable tension rather than a fixed snap-fit, and treated against scratching. Locking is central, operated from the middle of the chin area rather than from either side — the mechanism Shark uses across its closed-face road helmets, not the side-locking catches on the jet range. A Dark Smoke visor ships alongside the fitted clear one in the box for track use, where it is legal only off the public road.

Wind noise, honestly

A closed shell with a sealed chin bar is quieter at speed than any open helmet by simple construction, and that holds here too — no manufacturer decibel figure is published for this specific model, so none is invented, but the shape itself does the fundamental work a jet cannot: sealing the lower face rather than leaving it open to the airstream.

Where the Skwal i Cup sits on price

The plain Skwal Cup below it runs from €269.99 to €339.99 across its decor range without any light at all. The closed-face Skwal i3, Shark's other current LED helmet but built on the older full-face-only platform, runs €319.99 to €399.99. This single Dark Shadow Mat decor lists at €329.99 — inside the Skwal Cup's own price band, and below the i3's, despite carrying the newer vertical-signature light system neither of those two shares.

Model Price range LED
Skwal Cup €269.99–€339.99 none
Skwal i Cup (this helmet) €329.99 vertical, rear spoiler
Skwal i3 €319.99–€399.99 full brake-light system

Spare parts, later

A scratched visor does not retire this helmet. The Pinlock 70 insert and the visor itself are listed under the same VZ400 family Shark stocks for the Skwal i3, D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2 and plain Skwal Cup — four other current helmets drawing from the same parts bin, which is a reasonable guarantee that this visor will still be stocked well after this particular decor has moved on.

Fit, honestly stated

Six sizes, XS through XXL, cover this helmet, the same span as every other model in this batch. Shark does not publish a shell-count figure for the Skwal i Cup on the pages this listing draws from, so no claim is made here about how many physical shell sizes those six head sizes are split across — where that number is known for a sibling model it is stated outright; where it is not, as here, it is left unknown rather than assumed to match a similarly-priced helmet.

What this helmet does not have

Said plainly, so nothing is a surprise after delivery: no SHARP star rating exists for the Skwal i Cup — the UK programme has tested older Shark models under the Skwal name, not this one, and nothing from those results is carried over here. No MIPS, no DOT or Snell certification, no published wind-noise figure, and no confirmed number of operating modes for the LED beyond the automatic brake-light behaviour described above. This is also the only decor of this helmet currently in the range — there is no alternate colourway to compare it against yet.

In the box

The helmet arrives with the clear visor fitted and the Max Vision Pinlock 70 insert already mounted rather than loose, a Dark Smoke visor packed alongside it for track use, reflective bands, and a helmet bag for storage and transport. Shark's documentation covers the light system's operation and the same country-legislation caveat referenced above.
