DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Knox Shield is a full-zip hoodie that looks like sportswear and is certified like a leather suit. Knox calls it a groundbreaking single-layer garment: it meets EN 17092 Class AAA, the highest class for motorcycle clothing, while feeling as comfortable as good athleisure wear.
Fitted with Micro-Lock Compact armour at shoulders, elbows and back, it is built for riders who want to ride in something they would wear anyway, without dropping the protection level.
Key Features
- EN 17092 Class AAA in a single-layer hoodie
- Knit from UHMWPE (HPPE) fibres with cotton and elastane
- Micro-Lock Compact Level 1 shoulders and elbows, Level 2 back protector
- Close, armoured-shirt fit rather than a loose hoodie cut
- Cotton-lined hood, full YKK zip, thumb loops
- Two zipped exterior pockets with visor wipe, phone and earplug pockets inside
- Reflective prints that look black by day
Single Layer, Highest Class
The Shield's protection comes from its fabric. Knox uses Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene fibres (UHMWPE, also known as HPPE), known for very high strength and abrasion resistance, knitted with cotton and elastane for stretch and comfort. Our supplier lists the composition as 48 percent HPPE, 48 percent cotton and 4 percent elastane.
Years of fabric development, according to Knox, went into reaching Class AAA in a single layer, without a separate abrasion liner.
Cut Like an Armoured Shirt
Despite the hoodie look, the Shield is cut to fit close like an armoured shirt, not like a loose leisure hoodie. That keeps the protectors over your joints. The Micro-Lock Compact armour is Level 1 at shoulders and elbows and Level 2 for the back protector, certified to EN 1621-2.
A branded Velcro panel inside the front takes an optional Micro-Lock chest protector.
Comfort Details
The hood is lined with soft cotton, and soft stretch binding finishes the cuffs and waist. Thumb loops keep the sleeves in place under gloves. YKK zips are used throughout, including the full front zip.
Reflective prints and stretch binding look black in daylight but light up at night, and Knox branding is kept discreet.
Storage and Connection
Two exterior zipped pockets with soft pullers hold everyday items, with an extra visor wipe in one of them. Inside are two low-profile pockets plus a pocket for earplugs and a phone.
Knox's security belt loop system lets you attach the Shield to jeans when you wear the two together. Matching Shield jogging bottoms are available separately.
Who the Shield Is For
The Shield makes most sense for riders who spend more time off the bike than on it: commuters who walk into an office, scooter and city riders, and anyone who dislikes looking like a motorcyclist at the café. Knox says it is designed to be used by any rider on any terrain. Paired with the matching Shield joggers or Knox riding jeans, it forms a complete outfit with AAA-rated abrasion resistance on top.
Knox's men's size chart runs S to 3XL by chest and waist; size up if you are between two.
What You Should Know
The Shield is not waterproof and offers no wind or rain protection beyond its knit fabric; in wet weather you need an outer layer. The shoulder and elbow pads are Level 1, not Level 2. The chest protector is optional and not included.
Remove all armour before machine washing and read the care labels carefully. Men's sizes run S to 3XL.
Colour
Black is the only colour, and it suits the Shield's purpose of passing as a normal hoodie in town, in a café or at work. Black hides wear and dirt well. It is not conspicuous in traffic by day, but the reflective prints, invisible in daylight, become bright under headlights.
