DescriptionThe whole story▼
On a rough motocross track, the rear brake does more than slow the bike. On a Yamaha YZ250, a brief touch before a rutted corner settles the chassis, keeps the rear in line and helps the front wheel find the rut. Accossato lists the DK168 for the YZ250 from 2003 to 2018, a fixed rear disc in steel. It is 245 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick, and it takes the place of the original rear disc.
Key Features
- Fixed rear disc for the Yamaha YZ250, 2003 to 2018
- One-piece steel disc from Accossato's off-road range
- 245 mm outside, 115.2 mm inside diameter
- 4 mm thickness
- Six holes of 6.2 mm on a 133 mm circle
- Interchangeable with the original, according to Accossato
- Minimum working thickness printed on the disc
- No German ABE documented; for motocross use
Construction and Material Quality
There are no separate parts in the DK168: braking surface, centre and fixing holes are one steel disc. Accossato gives the inner diameter as 115.2 mm and places six 6.2 mm holes on a 133 mm circle, which is how the disc bolts to the rear hub of the YZ250. At 4 mm it is a little thicker than the DK111 that Accossato lists for the front of the same bike. The company credits its disc engineering to Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3 and prints the minimum thickness on each disc it makes.
Setting Up for the Rut
Ruts form in the same places every lap, and the fastest way through them is to enter smoothly with the bike settled. Riders on a YZ250 typically do their hard braking with the front on the way in, then use the rear in the last few metres: a short press that settles the rear end, slows the back wheel slightly and keeps the bike straight as the front drops into the rut. Too much, and the rear wheel locks and steps out of line; too little, and the bike pitches onto the front and the rut throws it out.
On a two-stroke like this the rear brake gets used that way dozens of times per moto, and the rear disc sits in the line of fire. Roost from other riders hits it, mud packs around it and stones can jam between disc and caliper. After each ride, clean the rear brake properly and spin the wheel to check that the disc runs straight and the pads do not drag. Look at the pad thickness through the caliper and at the disc surface for grooves. When the thickness nears the printed minimum, or if the disc has been bent by a rock or a crash, replace disc and pads together and bed the new pair in on the first laps.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK168 for the YZ250 from 2003 to 2018. At the front the list names the DK111, from 1998 to 2018. The YZ250 has one rear disc, and one DK168 replaces it. Check the rear wheel bearings and the sprocket bolts while the wheel is out, and tighten the disc bolts to Yamaha's specification.
Road Approval
No German ABE has been documented for the DK168, and there is no type approval. It is intended for motocross and closed tracks.
